二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Calling someone a “birdbrain” is considered rude. It implies that someone has a small brain and thus is not smart. A new study found that the expression doesn’t do birds justice either. Birds’ brains are much bigger than we thought-at least compared to their small bodies.

An international team of 37 scientists measured the brain volume of hundreds of dinosaurs and extinct birds by scanning fossils of their skulls. The readings were compared to a large database containing the brain sizes of modern birds. These measurements were then analyzed, taking into consideration each bird’s body size-resulting in something called “relative brain size”. The results showed that a dramatic change of birds’ body size happened right after the mass extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

According to the study, published on April 23 in the journal Current Biology, birds and non-avian (非鸟类的) dinosaurs had similar brain sizes before the extinction. After the extinction of the dinosaurs, however, birds had to find a way to survive, so they shrank their bodies-since smaller animals need less food-but they kept their big brains.

“The changed landscape may have caused the rapid evolution of new brain-body scaling patterns (缩放比例) by favoring both larger brains and smaller bodies,” US paleontologist (古生物学家) Daniel Ksepka, who is the lead author of the study, told CNN.

This “evolutionary brain leap”-as scientists call it-also happened very rapidly. Without dinosaurs, birds quickly repopulated. They came in all types and sizes, which contributed to the diverse species of birds we see today.

But among all the bird species, certain ones “show above average rates of brain and body size evolution”, study co-author Adam Smith at Clemson University, US, said in a statement-with crows and parrots being the most evident. In fact, previous studies have already discovered that these birds have an amazing cognitive ability. They are able to use tools, imitate human speech and even remember human faces.

So, in the words of Smith, “calling someone ‘bird-brained’ is actually quite a compliment!”

1How did scientists learn the brain sizes of dinosaurs and extinct birds?

    A.By referring to a database.

    B.By analyzing their body size.

    C.By studying their fossil skulls.

D.By examining the brain size of modem birds.

2What were birds’ brains like after the extinction of the dinosaurs?

A.They were the same size as non-avian dinosaurs.

B.They shrank to adapt to the environment.

C.They kept growing to avoid extinction.

D.They remained as big as they were before.

3According to Adam Smith, what do we know about birds?

A.Their brain evolution happened very rapidly.

B.Some species evolved to be smarter than others.

C.Crows and parrots have the largest bird brains.

D.Birds have amazing abilities to copy human speech.

4What is the purpose of this text?

A.To explain the origin of the word “birdbrain”.

B.To describe how a bird evolved through history.

C.To present a new study on birds’ brain size.

D.To reveal reasons for the rapid growth of bird populations.

  • 22、   For an entire decade, the award for Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year was quite predictable: It either went to Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo or Argentina’s Lionel Messi. After all, they are the “legends” of soccer.

This year’s recipient, however, came as a surprise: Croatian player Luka Modric.

For those who aren’t soccer fans, Modric’s name is probably unfamiliar, mostly due to the fact that he rarely appears in TV commercials, and that he’s not a striker—things that apply to both Ronaldo and Messi—but a midfielder.

But Modric, 33, has certainly had a fruitful year. As a key member of Real Madrid, Modric helped the Spanish club win their third straight Champions League title in May. And as the captain of his national team of Croatia, Modric led the team to its first ever World Cup final in July.

And Modric’s hard childhood makes his achievements even more remarkable.

He grew up during the war following the break-up of Yugoslavia and the independence of Croatia. When he was 6, his grandfather was shot dead and his family had to live as refugees in a warzone. When playing soccer was an after-school hobby for kids of his age in other countries, it was an escape for Modric—he played soccer as a way to take his mind off the hardship his family was facing.

But it was this experience that gave Modric the mental toughness to push forward on his path to becoming one of the top soccer players in the world.

“The war made me stronger,” Modric told CNN. “We are not easy people to break. And there is a determination to show that, to show that we can succeed.”

It may be true that Modric wasn’t seen as a legend before. But by winning the Best Men’s Player award on Sept 24, he joined Ronaldo and Messi at the top of the list of the world’s best soccer players. And what could be more legendary than that? So, the man who defeated legends must be something even bigger.

1Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are mentioned in the passage to ________.

A.distinguish their differences B.show their contribution to soccer

C.highlight Modric’s achievements D.arouse the readers interest in soccer

2Why did Modric start playing soccer?

A.Playing soccer was his hobby. B.He wanted to help his family out of trouble.

C.Playing soccer was required by his school. D.He expected to forget his family’s tough situation.

3What can we learn about Modric from the passage?

A.He is captain of Real Madrid.

B.He often works as an advertising spokesperson.

C.He plays the same position as Cristiano Ronaldo.

D.He has made history for Croatia on the soccer field.

4What does the passage intend to tell us?

A.Where there is life, there is hope.

B.Hardship makes a determined person stronger.

C.Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well.

D.A contented mind is the greatest blessing a man can enjoy in this world.

  • 23、Plants take carbon dioxide(CO2)out of the atmosphere to do photosynthesis(光合作用), and thus help reduce the greenhouse gases warming the planet. At least, that’s how the story went before researchers from the Carnegie Institution for Scienee(CIS)realized that today’s carbon dioxide levels cause the plants to behave in a way that actually contributes to global warming.

The CIS scientists unveiled new research that shows increased carbon dioxide levels cause plants to keep water that otherwise would have evaporated (蒸发)from their leaves, entered the atmosphere and helped cool the planet. At local levels, this effect can increase the temperature so that it is 25 percent higher than what the greenhouse effect would have done on its own. This increased warming results from plant leaves’ natural reaction to high CO2 environments. Plant leaves have tiny vents that open or close to let the plant breathe. In the presence of a high carbon dioxide concentration, these vents don’t need to open as wide to breathe in the same amount of CO2, and so they close up to prevent additional water from escaping.

Most climate models don’t take into account the cooling effect of this water, so the CIS researchers generated new climate models based on their understanding of this phenomenon. The new model showed that, averaged over the entire globe, the decreased water loss from plants accounts for 16 percent of warming of the land surface, with greenhouse effects accounting for the rest. But in some regions, such as parts of North America and eastern Asia, the effect can account for more than 25 percent of the total warming.

Unfortunately, these results don’t just confirm that the contribution of CO2 to global warming is worse than scientists previously thought, but also greatly add complexity to any attempts to reverse (反转)the warming process.

【1】What will happen in high CO2 environments?

    A.Plants close up their vents.

    B.Plants stop breathing in CO2.

C.Plants are not likely to react.

    D.Plants suffer much water loss.

【2】What is known about the research?

A.It was carried out in certain regions.

B.It took many climate models into consideration.

C.It confirms CO2 doesn’t contribute to global warming.

D.It shows global warming is more complex than expected.

【3】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Plants Can Warm the Planet

B.Plants Are Greener on the Earth

    C.Global Warming Becomes Complex

D.New Climate Models Are on the Way

  • 24、   A dozen international coffee experts shuffle(把脚挪来挪去)around a long wooden table, pausing at each steaming cup, heads dipping and sniffing deeply. Then the slurping(吃喝或吸吮的声音)begins. In the wings, coffee farmer Yang Fan watches intently as the judges circle, awaiting a verdict(裁定)on her latest crop of beans.

China may be the spiritual home of tea, but it is fast developing a reputation as a top coffee producer. This tasting was a side event to the first ever Pu'er International Specialty Coffee Expo in China's southwestern Yunnan province, which ran this winter and drew more than a thousand attendees, including industry aficionados(酷爱者) from across the globe.

"Coffee has huge potential in China," says Liu Ying, who swapped her life working in private-equity(私人股权) investment in Beijing to grow coffee in Pu'er five years ago. "The younger generation prefers to drink coffee in their offices much more than tea." Still, Pu'er remains synonymous with tea.

This bustling (喧闹的)town near the Laos border is surrounded by the green hills scored with tea plantations; it produces a variety of tea which is also called Pu’er, considered one of China's most refined. But the region's mild climate is also perfect for growing Arabica coffee. And as China's fast-living millennials move away from traditional tea in favor of the invigorating coffee, Pu'er's farmers are catering to the demand.

Yunnan accounts for 98% of China's coffee harvest, with half coming from the misty landscape around Pu'er. Today, China is the 13th biggest coffee producer in the world—rising from zero output three decades ago to 136,000 tons annually today.

In April, Seattle's annual Specialty Coffee Expo decided to showcase China as its portrait country of origin. It follows on the heels of Starbucks' launching its first single-origin Yunnan coffee last year after eight years of partnership with Yunnan farmers.

With global coffee prices at record lows, Yunnan farmers are processing beans in bespoke ways to create distinct flavors—allowing them to enter the market of specialty coffee.

"At current coffee prices, I can't even feed my family," says the farmer Yang. "My only way out is to produce specialty coffee, to make the best coffee beans."That means letting beans dry in their cherries, thus producing a wild, fruity flavor via environmental fermentation(发酵),or allowing them to "honey" in their sugary inner layer, which adds a subtle sweetness.

Back in the tasting room, Yang awaits the experts' verdict on whether all that extra effort was worthwhile."If I told you this was Colombian or Panama coffee, nobody would argue with me," says Samuel Gurel, CEO of Pu'er's Torch Coffee Roasters, as Yang breaks into a huge grin. "It's a great example of how Chinese coffee is evolving."

1What caused Liu Ying to quit her former job to grow coffee in Pu’er?

    A. Yunnan accounts for 98% of China’s coffee harvest.

    B. There is a huge potential of coffee market in China.

    C. She wants to introduce the younger generation to coffee.

    D. She is tired of her work in private-equity investment.

2According to the passage, we know that Arabica coffee __________.

    A. is mainly grown in Yunnan

    B. appeals to Chinese, especially the young

    C. is a more invigorating drink compared with tea

    D. needs mild climate to grow

3The “extra effort” in the last paragraph refers to __________.

    A. processing coffee beans in bespoke ways to create distinct flavors

    B. forming a business partnership with Starbucks

    C. lowering the price of Yunnan coffee beans

    D. replacing Yunnan coffee with Colombian or Panama coffee

4What does Samuel Gurel think of Yang’s coffee beans?

    A. praiseworthy B. arguable

    C. inferior D. unsatisfactory
