二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   15 years ago, Erin Merryn met a kitten who needed a home when she was a college student.

He jumped into her arms and refused to let her go.

“I was attached immediately and decided that I would take a risk and try hiding a kitten in my college dorm where animals are obviously not allowed,” Erin recalled.

A week later she was caught and given 48 hours to remove the cat. After several phone calls, Erin was able to find an old lady to take Bailey, the kitten. But Bailey did not get along with his new housemate. As soon as Erin learned that he would be sent away, she immediately offered to take him back. “I plotted for a month to convince my parents to let me keep him.” said Erin.

Six years ago, Erin had Abby, her beautiful daughter. She didn’t know what Bailey would think about the new addition when she brought her home from the hospital.

“But it was love at first sight.” Erin said. Bailey stayed by Abby’s side, guarding and showering her with love and purrs. As Abby grew, he became her protective brother, watching over her every step of the way. Abby picked up a book one day and tried to read it with Bailey  by her side. He became her perfect audience, and the sweet boy was completely attracted by Abby as she told him stories of wonder.

A video showing Abby reading to Bailey went viral on the Internet in 2018. Numerous people followed Erin on social media platforms.

Unfortunately, on December 8, 2018, just months after becoming famous, the 14-year old cat passed away from kidney failure.

A full month after Bailey’s passing, Erin still got cards and gifts from caring individuals. It is this love that Erin hopes Bailey’s fans hold on to. She wants her furry “first-born” to be remembered as a symbol of compassion that inspires others to treat the world with love.

  • 22、An interesting question in humankind’s development is, when did we begin to think critically? In other words, when did we turn from animals focused only on the daily struggle to avoid starvation to humans who could think symbolically about the word around us? However, answering this question is not easy as thinking leaves no fossils to discover.

A commonsense assumption is that higher levels of thought go hand-in-hand with verbal language, because higher thinking, such as creative thought, would naturally seek a means of expression. So tracing the development of language could give an approximate idea of when humans began to think critically.

Interestingly, we do have some fossil evidence related to speech. Animals whose larynx (voice box) is placed high in their throats are unable to produce the variety of sounds necessary for speech. Fossil bones tell us that in early humans, the larynx was originally high in the throat. However, by about 200,000 years ago, it had moved lower in the throat. This lowering provided a larger sound chamber (the space in the throat and the mouth) in which passing air could be controlled by the tongue, making a wide range of sounds and rhythms possible.

So humans were physically able to speak around 200,000 years ago, but when did they actually start doing so? Estimates range from 35,000 to 100,000 years ago. But with no physical evidence of ancient language use, we need another approach to determine more precisely when humans began to speak - and to think critically.

Professor Richard Klein of Stanford University suggests that art may be the key. After all, ability to create or appreciate art is a uniquely human train. If ancient humans had the imagination to create a work of art (which in itself is a means of communication), then it seems highly likely that they would possess the primary means of communication: language. This suggests that the first works of art can be considered indicators of when language and critical though began.

Until recently the earliest art was believed to be cave paintings, carved figures, and jewelry found in southwestern Europe and thought to data from about 40,000 years ago. This suggested that humans first became capable of critical thought about 40,000 years ago. However, this time frame was recently overturned by an exciting discovery in South Africa. Anthropologist Christ Henshilwood spent more than ten years exploring a cave there. He found many well-made tools, but more intriguing were the 8,000 pieces of ochre, a soft stone that can be turned into paint. Hensilwood’s breakthrough came in 1999 when he found an ochre piece with lines cut in a careful pattern. In other words, it was deliberate artistic design. Henshilwood had found the oldest piece of art yet, its date of origin set at 70,000 years — nearly 30,000 years before the art in Europe.

Based on Henshilwood’s discovery, it seems that humans began to speak and think critically at least 70,000 years ago.

【1】______ made humans physically able to speak.

    A.The evolution of the tongue

    B.The lowering of the larynx

    C.The appearance of various sounds

    D.The higher thinking

【2】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.No other animals than humans can enjoy art.

B.Before 1999, Africa was thought to be the origin of art.

C.Without creative though, humans would be unable to speak.

D.Evidence of ancient language use was once found in Europe.

【3】According to the passage, the oldest deliberate artistic design dates back to ______ years ago.

    A.30,000

    B.40,000

    C.70,000

    D.200,000

【4】Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?

A.How did humans stop struggling for starvation?

B.When did humans become able to create art?

C.How did humans communicate more freely?

D.When did humans begin to think?

  • 23、You’ve probably heard this dental advice before: brush your teeth twice a day.【1】Here’s what experts have to say.

According to Dr. Mark Burhenne , a dentist based in Sunnyvale, California, the key to teeth protection is managing your biofilm(生物膜)—an outer coating on your teeth containing bacteria. In that biofilm are bacteria that pull certain minerals from saliva(唾液).【2】

When we eat things, especially sugary or acid foods, they will stick to our teeth.【3】The thicker and furry biofilm can no longer remineralize our teeth properly. The movement of the toothbrush is what breaks up the thickened biofilm so that it reforms into its natural thin and slippery state to protect teeth.

【4】 According to Alicia Murria, a dentist based in Washington, your toothpaste is going to help you to feel fresher. It’s also going to help to kill some of the bacteria inside your mouth. But the most important step in keeping your teeth clean is good brushing technique. By brushing each tooth and slightly sweeping the gum line with your brush at a 45-degree angle, you’ll be able to remove plaques(牙斑). If your brushing technique is good, even a toothbrush with water can be enough.

Murria suggests brushing your teeth first thing in the morning, before eating breakfast. If you do happen to eat first, make sure you wait at least 30 minutes before brushing. The acid from the meal softens the enamel(牙釉质).【5】

A.But whose advice should we follow?

B.The biofilm layer will get thicker and thicker.

C.But why and how are we supposed to do it?

D.Choose the right toothpaste that suits you best.

E.Funny enough, toothpaste actually does less work than you think.

F.These minerals are pulled into the teeth to prevent them from going bad.

G.So if you brush too soon you could damage that typically hard, shiny protective layer.

  • 24、Over the past five years, researchers in artificial intelligence have become the rock stars of the technology world. A branch of AI known as deep learning, has proven so useful that skilled operators can command six-figure salaries to build software for Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google. The top names can earn over $1 million a year.

The traditional way to get these jobs has been a Doctor’s degree in computer science from one of America’s top universities. Earning one takes years and requires a person who can be devoted to study, which is rare among normal people. Moreover, graduate students are regularly attracted away from their studies by various high-paid jobs.

That is changing. Last month Fast.ai, an education non-profit based in San Francisco, kicked off the third year of its course in deep learning. Since its beginning it has attracted more than 100,000 students from India to Nigeria. The course comes with a simple idea: there is no need to spend years obtaining a Doctor’s degree in order to practise deep learning. Fast.ai’s course can be completed in just seven weeks.

For example, a graduate from Fast.ai’s first year, Sara Hooker, was hired into Google’s highly competitive AI residency programme after finishing the course, having never worked on deep learning before. She is now a founding member of Google’s new AI research office in Accra, Ghana, the firm’s first in Africa.

To make it accessible to anyone who wants to learn how to build AI software, Jeremy Howard, who founded Fast.ai with Rachel Thomas, a mathematician, says middle school mathematics is enough. Fast.ai is not the only A.I. programme. AI4ALL, another non-profit organization, founded by leading technologists including Dr. Fei-Fei Li, works to bring AI education to schoolchildren that would otherwise not have access to it.

Howard’s ambitions run deeper than just dealing with the shortage in the AI labour market. His aim is to spread deep learning into many hands, so that it may be applied in as many fields as possible. The ambition, says Mr Howard, is for AI training software to become as easy to use and common as sending an email on a smart phone.

    【1】What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?

【2】What can we learn about Fast.ai?

A.It aims to produce AI graduates in a fast way.

B.It aims to collect money for poor students.

C.It charges a high free for offering courses.

D.It becomes popular only in India and Nigeria.

【3】Where does Sara Hooker work according to the passage?

    A.India.

    B.Nigeria.

    C.Ghana.
