22、 Like many of us, Brittney Woodrum had a lot of plans for 2020. The University of Denver graduate student was going to travel the world and continue her work for the various non-governmental organizations (NGOs) she'd been working for before graduate school. However, when a serious infectious disease started, Woodrum began to accept that her travel plans would have to be put on hold. But what she couldn't accept was staying at home and “waiting this thing out.”
So, the Kentucky native began to look for an organization she could partner with to get the most out of her newly flexible schedule. She quickly found and committed to Shelterbox — a mostly volunteer-run organization that provides emergency shelter and tools for displaced families around the world — recognized internationally by the green box which physically holds the relief products. She joined as an ambassadress and learned that participating in physically challenging projects with the bluish-green box was central to the organization's mission.
As a hiker and lover of the outdoors, the 27-year-old decided she was going to climb all 58 of Colorado's 14,000 feet mountains with the goal of raising awareness and funding for families around the world who have lost their homes and are now facing the threat of the disease. 78 days and nearly 600 miles of hiking later, Woodrum raised $85,000 from friends, family and strangers around the world.
Woodrum said because the project came together so quickly, she didn't think she would raise more than $ 5,000. Word seemed to spread very quickly and a lot of people were equally moved by Shelterbox's mission and what I was doing," she said. "I have a large amount of gratitude to everyone who came out to support me both virtually and physically.”
The journey was not easy. “There were a lot of variables (可变因素) involved, from the weather to my health and well-being.” She said, “I am so relieved that everything went better than expected.”

23、When 12-year-old Taylor Smith wrote a special letter to herself last spring, to be read in 10 years’ time, she didn’t know it would be opened before even a year had passed— and that it wouldn’t be her eyes reading the words.
“She had told me that she had written a letter to herself, and that she was excited that she was going to open it when she was older,”said Taylor’s mother, Mary Ellen Smith.
Instead, it was opened by Taylor’s parents after she died last spring. They posted the letter to Facebook, hoping it would inspire others.
It has. “We’ve gotten letters from lots of parents who have said it has encouraged them to love their kids and love each other,” said Mary Ellen Smith.
In the letter, Taylor congratulated herself on graduating from high school and asked, “Are you in college?”

24、 Selective breeding, also known as artificial selection, is a process used by humans to develop new organisms with desirable traits. It can be used to produce tastier fruits and vegetables, crops with greater resistance to pests, and larger animals that can be used for meat.
Perhaps the earliest example of selective breeding is the domestic dog. Scientists believe that the domestic dog evolved from the wild gray wolf, and through artificial selection, humans were able to create hundreds of different dog breeds. As people domesticated and bred dogs, they favored specific traits, like size or intelligence, for certain tasks, such as hunting, shepherding, or companionship. As a result, many dog breeds vastly differ in appearance, a unique phenomenon in the animal world, as different breeds of a single species generally look like each other. The Chihuahua and the Dalmatian, for instance, are both dogs, yet they share few physical features.
Selective breeding has also been practiced in agriculture for thousands of years. Almost every fruit and vegetable eaten today is a product of artificial selection. By picking out wild cabbage plants with specific characteristics, farmers were able to create a variety of vegetables from a single source, each with differing flavors. Broccoli, for example, was developed from wild cabbage plants that hadn't enough flower development while kale came from Brassica oleracea with larger leaves.
Corn is an unusual product of selective breeding. Unlike rice, wheat, and cabbage, which have clear ancestors, there is no wild plant that looks like corn. The earliest records of corn indicate that the plant was developed in southern Mexico 6,000—10,000 years ago from a grass called teosinte. Scientists believe that early Mexican farmers selected only the largest and tastiest seeds of teosinte for planting. This process allowed Mexicans to develop corn very quickly, as small changes in the plant's genetic makeup had dramatic effects on the grain's taste and size.
Without selective breeding, many of the plants and animals on earth today would not exist. However, every coin has two sides.

25、Is Tap Water Safe to Drink?
Tap water is not without its problems. More recently, the Michigan City of Flint has been struggling with high lead (铅) levels in its drinking water. Over the years people have witnessed major ____of groundwater pollution leading to unhealthy tap water.
The nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG) detected some 260 pollutants in public water supplies in 42 states and faulted the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for ____ to establish standards on so many of the pollutants - from industry, agriculture, and urban rivers - that do end up in our water.
Despite these seemingly ____ statistics, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), which has also conducted a series of ____ tests on municipal (市政的) water supplies as well as bottled water, says, “In the short term, if you are an adult with no special health ____, and you are not pregnant, then you can drink most cities’ tap water without having to worry.” This is because most of the pollutants in public water supplies exist at such small concentrations that most people would have to ____ very large quantities for health problems to occur.
____, look at your water bottles carefully. It’s common for them to list the source as “municipal”, which means you paid for what ____ is bottled tap water.
“Pregnant women, young children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and those with weakened immune systems can be vulnerable (脆弱的) to the risks posed by polluted water,” NRDC does ____, however. The group suggests that anyone who may be at risk obtain a copy of their city’s annual water quality report and review it with their ____.
As for bottled water, 25 to 30 percent of it comes straight from municipal tap water systems, despite the pretty nature ____ on the bottles that imply otherwise. Some of that water goes through additional filtering (过滤), but some does not. What’s more, bottled water is required to be ____less frequently than tap water for bacteria and chemical pollutants, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration bottled water rules allow for some pollution by E. coli (大肠杆菌), ____ to EPA tap water rules that prohibit any such pollution.
Also, NRDC found that there are no ____ for bottled water to be disinfected or tested for parasites (寄生虫), unlike more strict EPA rules regulating tap water. This leaves the possibility ____, says NRDC, that some bottled water may present similar health threats to those with weakened immune systems.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
An elderly man had collapsed while crossing the street, and an ambulance sent him to the hospital immediately. When the man came to himself now and again, he repeatedly called for his son.
From a worn letter found in his pocket, an emergency room nurse learned that his son was a soldier. The nurse called the Red Cross office in Brooklyn and made a request for the soldier to be rushed to the hospital. Soon, the young man was found and rushed to the airport in time to reach his dying father.
It was mid-evening when the young man walked into the hospital. A nurse led the anxious man to the bed of the elderly man. “Your son is here,” she whispered to the elderly patient. The old patient's eyes opened only after she repeated the words several times. The old man was too weak so it was really hard for him to stay awake and he could vaguely see the young man standing beside him.
The old man reached out his hand with all his strength and the young man realized it and immediately held it.
The nurse brought a chair for the young man to sit beside the bed. The young man sat holding the old man's hand offering him words of love and hope, all through the night. The dying old man said nothing. The nurse suggested that the young man move away and rest for a while, but he refused. Now and then, she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only holding his son's hand tightly throughout the night.
As dawn approached, the old man peacefully died. The young man placed his lifeless hand on the bed and informed the nurse. While the nurse did what was necessary, the young man waited. When she finished her task, the nurse began to say words of sympathy the young man needed.
