21、 The world is too big to take in all at once. To make sense and beauty of it, you have to look at a small part at a time.
In using a camera, you choose a small part through he view finder. You move the camera, “framing” pictures until you see one that pleases you. Then-click! If you make a good choice, your picture will please others, as well as yourself.
“Wherever you are,” says photographer Ernst Haas, “you are surrounded by pictures. The trick is to recognize them.” His photograph of a twist of barbed wire shows what he means.
Mr. Haas tells us of ways to practice seeing. Make a simple frame of black cardboard. Take it out of the doors and look through it at everyday things, large or small, far away or near.
At first you may see nothing to interest you. But soon pictures seem to leap (跳) at you through the frame. Oil floating on water makes a picture in rainbow colors. Three people on the steps of an old house form a picture that seems to tells a story.
Did you notice such things before you used the frame? Perhaps not. But, with practice, you soon do not need its help. You see things as artists do. Everywhere, shapes and colors catch your eye. Your mind takes “snapshots (快照)” of their patterns. Then, if you wish, you can share what you see by taking a photograph or by making a drawing or a painting.
Sometimes it’s fun to “see small”. Did you ever notice the design of the seeds in sliced bananas? Have you looked deep inside a lily? Or seen the starburst in the center of a wet ice cube?
Do you see colors as they really are? When you paint tree trunks, you would make them brown or black. But tree trunks are really gray, purple, yellow-green—almost any color except brown or black!
Do you notice detail? Doing so can be in many ways. Remembering what you see is often useful, too. Practice can help you.
A trick for helping you to remember detail is the double take. Look—don’t look—then look again.
【1】What does the underlined word “trick” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. joke B. magic
C. habit D. skill
【2】What does the author want to tell us?
A. The better you learn to see, the more alive you are.
B. Walking in the country, you should look closely at the trunks.

D. Close your eyes and try to remember how it looks.
【3】Which of the fallowing is true according to the text?
A. When you paint trees, you would make them gray.
B. Glance at a bill and you remember how it looked.
C. Seeing is one way of living.
D. Give a second look and you remember all the detail.
【4】What is the main idea of the text?
A. The world is too big to travel around.
B. Look around—and see!
C. Wherever you are, a camera is important.
D. A good way to see is to carry a camera
22、 Whenever Prince George steps out for an engagement, like on the royal tour of Canada, or poses(摆姿势) for official photographs, there’s one thing about the little royal that has long confused royal watchers: the fact that he only ever wears shorts.
According to William Hanson, an etiquette(礼仪) expert, there is a very good reason for this—and it has nothing to do with fashion, but rather royal tradition.
“It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts,” William Hanson said. “Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent British class markers that we have in England. Although times are slowly changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class—quite suburban. No self-respecting royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”
The tradition can be traced back through the royal family, with both Princes William and Harry regularly seen wearing shorts until they were considered old enough to progress to full-length trousers.
“The usual custom is that a boy graduates to trousers around eight years old,” William added. “This is, historically, perhaps due to the practice of ‘breeching’, which dates back to the sixteenth century. A newborn boy would be dressed in a gown for their first year or two and then he was ‘breeched’ and wore articles of clothing that more resembled shorts or trousers than dresses.”
Ultimately, he concluded, in the case of William and Kate, the decision to dress George in shorts is more likely down to tradition than a class issue.
“The modern habit of upper class families choosing to dress their boys in shorts will deliberately hark back to(使人想起) a bygone age,” he said. “The British upper set are always keen to hold on to tradition, and this one also silently marks them out from ‘the rest’.”
【1】Why does Prince George only wear shorts?
A.Prince George loves shorts.
B.Prince George loves sports.
C.Shorts are a sign of fashion.
D.Wearing shorts is a royal practice.
【2】Which of the following words best describe Prince George’s wearing shorts?
A.Reasonable. B.Practical.
C.Traditional. D.Fashionable.
【3】Why do William and Kate dress Prince George in shorts?
A.They want to hold on to tradition.
B.They want to keep to royal fashion.
C.They want to train him to keep out the cold.
D.They want to ignore their social position.
23、 An American study of 10,000 students found that if you make more friends than the average person at school, you’ll receive a higher salary in later life. People need good social skills at work to work in a team successfully. 【1】
On average, teenagers aged between 15 and 17 have 500 “friends” on their favorite social networking sites. Adults have 130. So if you believe this research, you might be very rich.
【2】 Dunbar, a professor from the University of Oxford, studied the number of messages between users of a popular social networking website, each of whom had between 200 and 2,000friends. He found that they always communicate with a maximum of 150 people.
Among these 150, around 5 people are close friends. 【3】 They are probably old friends and you share all your good and bad experiences with them. Then there are 10 more friends. Although they’re close to you, you may not keep in touch with them every week. Next there are 35 people who you might spend time with because of a shared interest. 【4】 You see or speak to these people at least once a year, but you don’t know them well. Beyond this number, Dunbar says, it’s impossible to make any relationship meaningful.
If you have a lot of online “friends”, try this experiment: First take away anyone you haven’t been in touch with for a year. Then remove those you cannot remember and, finally, take away friends who you wouldn’t mind losing touch with. How many have you left? How many of these people are actually good friends? 【5】
A.You are not close to them.
B.And finally, there’s a large group of 100.
C.You’ve most likely known them for long.
D.However, it probably won’t make any difference.
E.These are the same skills we use to make friends at school.
F.They’ve found that having good friends can help you live longer.
G.According to the research, these are the only people that really matter.
24、 Connie Monroe clicks a button, turns her wrist and watches as her neighborhood floods. The reed-covered shorelines are first to go. Then, the baseball fields at Fleming Park. By the time seawater reaches the senior center, it has covered streets, flooding more than a dozen complexes that she can see.
Monroe moves her head up and down, side to side, taking in the simulated (模拟的) view. This is what could happen to Turner Station, a historic African American community, as sea levels rise.
“Everything’s underwater. The school is underwater. Our house is underwater,” Monroe says. A frown (皱眉) forms below the virtual reality headset. “Is the water really supposed to get that high?”
Climate change presents many challenges to coastal communities, but one of the most worrisome problems is: how do you show people — and convince them — of a possible future?
“It’s one thing to hear or read the news that sea levels could rise as high as 7 feet in Maryland by the end of the century under worst-case situations, but it’s another to imagine what that will look like in your own backyard,” says Jackie Specht, the coastal science program manager. “And if it’s hard to imagine, it’s hard to face and prioritize.”
Communicating the realness and immediacy of the climate threat is important to climate researchers and those aiming to prevent its causes. But it’s also paramount to communities faced with coming changes that are already unavoidable.
Climate projects need public support and input. That’s why Monroe and other residents at this recent community meeting are being directed to sit in metal chairs, put on virtual reality headsets and watch their homes flood.
Virtual reality is an immersive (沉浸式的) experience that can trick the human brain into thinking it’s real. But tricking people is not the goal of the sea level rise simulation being used at Turner Station, says Juliano Calil, one of the program’s developers.
The goal, he says, “is to help folks visualize the impacts of climate change and the solutions, and also discuss the trade-off between them.”
【1】What would you see in Turner Station as sea levels rise?
A.Shorelines covered by reeds. B.Baseball fields used as parks.
C.Streets blocked with bricks. D.Buildings drowned in water.

A.People are relatively safer in their backyards.
B.People don’t feel on the scene through the news.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My baby Reese started screaming and I struggled to hold him in my arms as we pushed our way through the crowd to the side of the taekwondo (跆拳道) studio, where I would send my boy for the training.
I looked up, and that is when I saw the photo on a poster, a woman with a bright white smile surrounded by her daughters. “OUR MOM NEEDS A KIDNEY (肾脏),” it said above the photo. “My name is Vonchelle Knight, and I have polycystic kidney disease,” it said below. “I am a single mother of two girls and have been on the transplant waitlist for eight years.”
As I continued to read, I thought about how desperately this momma needed a kidney. And then the idea struck me. I wanted to donate my kidney to the woman whom I had never met.
On the drive home, I told my husband I wanted to donate my kidney to a stranger. By the look on his face, he clearly thought I had lost my mind. I was a busy mom of two boys working a full-time job as a sales account manager. I had a calendar filled with sporting events, group fitness and volunteer church hours.
“Where is this coming from?” he asked. I was excited and slightly terrified as I explained the poster. I told him I wanted to at least call Vonchelle’s nurse and get more information.
Several weeks later, the results were in. We were a perfect match! The nervous excitement filled my body. Thoughts swirled in my head as I realized I had the ability to give this momma a new lease on life. Vonchelle had already waited eight years and obviously didn’t have any family members who could donate.
I told my husband that the doctor could do the transplant on January twenty-fifth. His eyes filled with tears as he stared at me and nodded. Vonchelle’s daughter worked at my son’s taekwondo studio, so I shared the news with her.
One day before the donation, the doctors scheduled me to meet Vonchelle.
