二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   On Hoxton Street in East London there is a very special children’s writing and mentoring(辅导) center called the Ministry of Stories, which is fronted by its shop , Hoxton Street Monster(怪兽) Supplies, where you can expect to find monster food. The store raises funds for this very special program that fires children’s imagination.

The youth aged 8 to 18 enter the Ministry, through a secret door that is designed to open a world of opportunity by encouraging a love for writing. The organization believes that, “Writing increases self-respect, improves communication and can change lives.” That’s because writing allows children’s voices to be heard.

This year, the workshop is celebrating 10 years of helping children discover a love for writing through creative programs. Founded by Lucy Macnab, Ben Payne and best-selling author Nick Hornby, the organization works with around 1,000 children per year participating in schools, and community programs across Hackney, Islington, and Tower Hamlets. It now has over 400 volunteers and runs its program free of charge for the youth of the areas.

“Through a range of creative writing programs, and one-to-one mentoring, we aim to help young people find their own qualities that can be developed,” Macnab told The Telegraph. “We build confidence, self-respect, and communication skills in both workshops for schools and out of school writing clubs.”

One 10-year participant, Nmeso, said that the weekly after-school club he attends at the Ministry has helped him grow his imagination and improve his academic performance. In fact, he was able to move up a grade in school. What’s even more remarkable is that Nmeso has had a story he wrote published ── along with other writers in the program ──titled Andre Has a Hard Time .This is Nmeso’s success story.

  • 22、There are some Christmas traditions between the United Kingdom and the United States.

    Letters to Santa Claus

In the United States, kids usually write letters to Santa and put them in the mailbox. However, in England we throw them directly into the fire. We don't plan to make kids cry because burning the letters can send them to the North Pole where Santa can read your Christmas wishes in the smoke. It may seem strange but it does save on postage.

    Hanging stocking

Traditionally, American kids hang stockings around the fireplace for Santa to fill with presents. But in the UK. we hang stockings around the bed; being surrounded by presents is a fantastic way to wake up on Christmas morning.

    Christmas pudding

Americans prefer to have pumpkin and pecan pies for the Christmas dessert; while we British are fond of Christmas pudding. which is a cake flavored with dried fruits and spices.

    Dealing with Christmas tree

We British chose to take down the Christmas trees and the decorations within 12 days of Christmas, because we hold the belief that keeping then beyond that time can bring bad luck. This is probably a tradition that Americans should consider adopting. I have seen people keep their old, brown, dry and withered Christmas trees until almost July 4.

【1】How do the British people deal with "Letters to Father Christmas"?

    A.Emailing them to Santa.

    B.Hiding them in the mailbox.

    C.Putting them in the stockings.

D.Throwing them straight into the fire.

【2】Why do the British take down the Christmas tree as early as possible?

    A.To stop it from drying

    B.To expect good luck.

    C.To save money.

D.To reuse it for the next year.

【3】What do Christmas traditions between Britain and America have in common?

    A.Writing letters to Santa.

    B.Making pumpkin pudding.

    C.Hanging stockings around the bed.

    D.Keeping Christmas trees for months.

  • 23、   We’ve all been there, running for a ls or train on a cold morning only to find that our nose is also running! Grab some tissues and learn the science behind the phenomenon known as “skier’s nose.”

A nose like a running tap in winter is business as usual for many people. People call it “skier’s nose". In a study, researchers found that 96 percent of people surveyed reported experiencing some degree of the condition.

Apparently, getting a runny nose in cold weather is a bodily defense reaction. That' s because the nose has two main purposes: 1) to filter bacteria so they don’t reach our lungs, and 2)to warm and humidify(加湿) the air before it reaches our lungs. Our airways are lined with tiny hairs known as cilia In the nose, these cilia wave back and forth to remove our mucus (黏液)so that bacteria can be blocked out. In cold weather the cilia are slowed. When cilia slow, bacteria remain in place and multiply, and this is why people get sick in winter. Not that the nose isn't trying to keep you healthy. All that running nose experience is the nose working overtime to produce more liquid to help move bacteria along. To help it out, experts say that you can try physically warming your nose: Rub your hands together, and then breathe into cupped hands or draw in steam from hot green tea and drink it, as green tea helps accelerate the growth and functioning of cilia.

Our nose runs in winter for one more purpose, which is to fight against the drier outside (and inside) air. In winter, or when it’s cold outside, the air is much drier than in summer. Our noses respond by producing more liquid to help humidify the air to a level our bodies need, and that’s when it starts to run out of the end of our nose.

1What does the underlined word “filter” probably mean in the third paragraph?

    A.Kill. B.Prevent.

    C.Defend. D.Trap.

2What can we know about “cilia”?

A.They only exist in the nose. B.They stop working in winter.

C.They can sweep away mucus. D.They help break down bacteria.

3Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A.When Do You Have A Running Nose?

B.What Are the Purposes of Your nose?

C.How Can You Deal With “skier’s nose”

D.Why Does, Your Nose Run When It's Cold?

  • 24、Brown noise is one classification of noise “color”. Each color represents long-lasting patterns of noise frequencies that we can hear, ranging from 20 to 20,000 hertz.

“White noise has equal energy at all frequencies. To us, it sounds like radio static,” explains Anahita Mehta, a researcher who studies sound pitch at the Kresge Hearing Research Institute at the University of Michigan. “Pink noise has more energy in low frequency ranges compared to the high ranges. It sounds lower than white noise. Examples would be rainfall or traffic.”

Then, there’s brown noise. It’s technically classified as red noise, but the nickname comes from the way it’s produced: Its sound signals change randomly to produce the sound of static, imitating a type of unsteady movement pattern, called Brownian motion. “Brown noise has even fewer high frequencies than white or pink noise, and you’ll recognize it as a lower sound,” Mehta says. “Examples would be the deep roar of an ocean wave crashing or thunder rolling.”

Although brown noise is the latest trend to make its way onto social media, scientists can only speculate about its benefits. Very little evidence exists on the effect of brown noise, and the proof that is available has included only small groups of participants for short periods of time. But there’s a growing interest to see if brown noise might help health.

Researchers suspect that brown noise may help produce the relaxation response in some people.“Maybe you find it relaxing to hear the sounds of the sea, so if you listen to brown noise that sounds like waves crashing, and it helps you, that’s great – as long as you’re listening at a low volume,” Mehta says. “However, there’s no strong evidence that listening to brown noise reduces stress.”

Despite the suspected promise of brown noise, researchers are also concerned about its potential harms.

【1】What are examples of brown noise?

    A.Rainfall and traffic.

    B.Radio static and ocean waves.

    C.Dogs barking and birds twittering.

    D.Thunder rolling and waves crashing.

【2】What does the underlined word “speculate” mean in paragraph 4?

    A.Identify.

    B.Imagine.

    C.Picture.

    D.Guess.

【3】What can be discussed after the last paragraph?

A.The investigations on effects of brown noise.

B.The tips on producing the relaxation response.

C.The evidence on health benefits of brown noise.

D.The examples of damage caused by brown noise.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the passage?

A.What Is Brown Noise and What Are the Benefits?

B.The Scientific Theory Behind Brown Noise

C.How Brown Noise Affects Brain Health?

    D.Different Noises, Different Colors
