  • 22、   The Pomodoro technique is probably one of the most powerful techniques in all of learning. All you have to do is set a timer for 25 minutes, and then just focus as attentively as you can for those 25 minutes.

Now if you start focusing on and you're working on, and then you look up at the timer and two minutes have passed. You may feel like you can't hold on. And just let the thought go by , and return your focus to whatever you are working on. And when that 25 minutes is up you relax a little bit. You might wonder why that 25 minutes is the magic number, and the reality is we don't really know. There's not a lot of research on the Pomodoro technique, which is surprising because it's so incredibly popular and people find it very useful.

But there's an interesting tidbit related to the Pomodoro technique, and that is that: when you just think about something that you don't like very much, it stimulates a part of the brain that experiences pain. And so the brain naturally enough shifts its attention to something else, like Facebook or Twitter or something like that.

And what the Pomodoro technique does, when you do it you're setting that timer. You don't want to sit there and think , “I'm going to work on this problem and get it all finished. You just want to think, I've got 25 minutes where I just have to work on something." Don't even think about what that something is. What that does is it slips in under your brain's radar. It doesn't stimulate so much that pain in your brain; and then that pain in the brain, research has shown , lasts for 20 minutes.

So if you work for 25 minutes you will suddenly find yourself getting into the flow because you've gone past that painful period. So the Pomodoro technique is effective in many different aspects.

1Which is an example of using the Pomodoro technique?

    A.Reading a novel for 25 minutes.

    B.Spending 25 minutes scanning WeChat.

C.Setting a timer for 25 minutes to do a tough task.

D.Attending a lecture for 25 minutes with two minds.

2What can be inferred about the Pomodoro technique from paragraph 2?

A.The first two minutes is vital. B.25 minutes is a magic number.

C.More research is around the corner. D.You may get discouraged when using it.

3Why is the tidbit mentioned in paragraph 3?

A.To further explain the Pomodoro technique.

B.To arouse interest in the Pomodoro technique.

C.To highlight how to use the Pomodoro technique.

D.To prove the effectiveness of the Pomodoro technique.

4How does the Pomodoro technique work?

A.It boosts your concentration. B.It helps your mind go faster.

C.It urges you to finish your work. D.It shortens the pain time in your brain.

  • 23、There are some Christmas traditions between the United Kingdom and the United States.

    Letters to Santa Claus

In the United States, kids usually write letters to Santa and put them in the mailbox. However, in England we throw them directly into the fire. We don't plan to make kids cry because burning the letters can send them to the North Pole where Santa can read your Christmas wishes in the smoke. It may seem strange but it does save on postage.

    Hanging stocking

Traditionally, American kids hang stockings around the fireplace for Santa to fill with presents. But in the UK. we hang stockings around the bed; being surrounded by presents is a fantastic way to wake up on Christmas morning.

    Christmas pudding

Americans prefer to have pumpkin and pecan pies for the Christmas dessert; while we British are fond of Christmas pudding. which is a cake flavored with dried fruits and spices.

    Dealing with Christmas tree

We British chose to take down the Christmas trees and the decorations within 12 days of Christmas, because we hold the belief that keeping then beyond that time can bring bad luck. This is probably a tradition that Americans should consider adopting. I have seen people keep their old, brown, dry and withered Christmas trees until almost July 4.

【1】How do the British people deal with "Letters to Father Christmas"?

    A.Emailing them to Santa.

    B.Hiding them in the mailbox.

    C.Putting them in the stockings.

D.Throwing them straight into the fire.

【2】Why do the British take down the Christmas tree as early as possible?

    A.To stop it from drying

    B.To expect good luck.

    C.To save money.

D.To reuse it for the next year.

【3】What do Christmas traditions between Britain and America have in common?

    A.Writing letters to Santa.

    B.Making pumpkin pudding.

    C.Hanging stockings around the bed.

    D.Keeping Christmas trees for months.

  • 24、Baths in Japan

In many western countries people do not bathe (沐浴) every day. Sometimes they bathe only once a week. Sometimes they bathe two or three times a week. They do not bathe often because the weather is cold or because hot water is expensive. They use electricity or wood to boil the water. Electricity and wood cost a lot of money. In cold countries people usually do not feel they are dirty if they do not have a bath.

In Japan people bathe very often. Most people have a bath every day. When the weather is hot they sometimes have two or three baths a day. They bathe in very hot water. Usually the water is almost boiling. They believe that these very hot baths also stop them from falling ill.

Each house has its own bathroom but there are also big bathhouses for everybody. They are found everywhere in Japan. In the bathhouse there is one part for men and one part for women. The bath is usually three meters wide, three meters long and about one meter deep: halfway down there is a narrow (狭窄的) seat that goes all the way around the bath. Many people use the bath but it is not dirty. Before a person gets into the big bath, they wash themselves first, and then get into the big bath. The person stays there for a short time. When they get out of the bath, they wash their body with soap and water. After the soap is all washed away, the person gets into the big bath again. Soap is not used in the big bath.

The water in the big bath is changed quite often. The water is also very hot. In some places people hit the water with sticks first. They do this to make the water cooler. Then the men get into the bath very slowly and carefully. When a man gets into a bath, he says. "Excuse me." He does this because most of the hot water comes directly out of the ground. In other places people boil the water with a big fire. In a small bath at home sometimes people light a fire under the bath. When the water is hot, people in the family take a bath one by one.

1Which of the following is not true about baths?

    A. Taking baths can help people relax themselves.

    B. Taking baths can refresh people.

    C. Taking baths can keep people clean.

    D. Taking baths can make people nervous.

2What do people use to boil water in many western countries?

    A. Electricity. B. Gas.

    C. Coal. D. Straw.

3What is the size of a public bath?

    A. Three meters long, three meters wide and about three meters deep.

    B. Three meters long, one meter wide and about three meters deep.

    C. Three meters long, three meters wide and about one meter deep.

    D. One meter long, three meters wide and about three meters deep.
