二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Darwin noted that some human emotional expressions might have started as part of a physiological function: for example, exposing the teeth to bite food. The function, however, took on meaning and became a form of communication which signals anger.

The same may be true for the animals. Baby monkeys cry for attention. They also cry to signal to an adult that they want to be carried.

“Chimpanzees do make upset voice when they are being weaned (断奶) by their mothers or have lost their mothers or another individual,” says Anne Pusey, a professor at the University of Minnesota. “They whimper (呜咽) and cry and scream. When we hear these calls, the emotion involved seems obvious. However, they do not weep in the sense of producing tears. I have seen an adolescent male whimpering when he lost sight of his older brother with whom he had been traveling.”

Babies of many mammalian species, including rats, cry. Moreover, when a baby rat cries, often his mother brings the fallen pup back into the nest. This is probably a straightforward communication, as it is with humans. However, psychologists at the University of Iowa aren’t convinced.

The Iowan researchers can cause the same crying sounds by producing large decreases and then increases in blood flow. The blood flow also goes down when baby rats get cold. Thus, they conclude baby rats cry in the same way that we sneeze. Of course the rat baby could be crying because he’s cold and wants his mother to know.

“All young mammals make cries when separated from their mother,” says Jaak Panksepp, a psychologist at Bowling Green State University. “If you’re willing to call this crying, then certainly other animals show this emotional response.” he says, “Some of us take seriously that animals do have emotions.”

1According to the first paragraph, what kind of emotion does “exposing the teeth” express?

    A. Disappointment. B. Excitement.

    C. Anger. D. Happiness.

2Which is one probable reason why young chimpanzees might be crying?

    A. They meet their brother.

    B. They have nothing to eat.

    C. They are being breast-fed.

    D. They are parted from their mother.

3Under what circumstance will baby rats cry just like humans’ sneeze?

    A. Their blood flow is decreased.

    B. They feel cold and long for affection.

    C. Their blood flow is increased.

    D. Their mother brings them back home.

4Where is the passage most likely taken from?

    A. An animal journal. B. A physiology book.

    C. A health magazine. D. A cultural newspaper.

  • 22、In 2017, Yazd, a city in the desert of central Iran, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Yazd has long been a focal point for creative inventiveness. It is home to an underground refrigeration structure called yakchat   and an underground irrigation system called qanats. In addition, the city has the wind catcher, a cooling architectural element that has been used for thousands of years. And it has the most wind catchers in the world.

These remarkable towers are a common sight standing above the buildings of Yazd. There are two main forces that drive the air through and down into the structures: the incoming wind and the change in buoyancy (浮力) of air. First,as air is caught by the opening of a wind catcher, it is led down to the house below. Then the air flows throughout the inside of the building, sometimes over underground pools of water for further cooling. Eventually, warmed air will   rise and leave the building through another tower or opening.

Some of the earliest wind-catching technology came from Egypt 3,300 years ago. Here, buildings had thick walls, few windows facing the sun, an opening to take in air and an exit opening on the other side known as malqaf architecture. Iran’s wind-catching technology is widely considered to have added structural improvements to allow for better cooling-such as typically combining it with its existing irrigation system to help to cool the air down before releasing it throughout the home.

The structures, which require no electricity to power them, are now drawing scientists back to the desert city to see what role they could play in keeping us cool in a rapidly heating world. Parham Kheirkhah Sangdeh has extensively studied the scientific application and surrounding culture of wind catchers in contemporary architecture at Ilam   University in Iran. He hopes to see Iran’s wind catchers updated to add energy-efficient cooling to existing buildings. “People need to keep an eye on the past and understand why energy conservation is important,” he says.

【1】Which of the following makes the city of Yazd unusual?

    A.Its long history.

    B.Its extreme climates.

    C.Its ancient innovative wonders.

    D.Its central geographical position.

【2】Where is the opening of a wind catcher?

    A.Near a house’s door.

    B.Above the rooftop.

    C.Beside the underground pools.

    D.Beneath a house’s windows.

【3】How does Iran’s wind catcher differ from Egypt’s malqaf ?

A.It is surrounded by thicker walls.

B.It has no windows facing the sun.

C.It requires no electricity to power it.

D.It takes advantage of water’s properties.

【4】What is Parham Kheirkhah Sangdeh working on?

A.Introducing wind catchers into today’s buildings.

B.Studying the earliest wind catchers in Egypt.

C.Repairing traditional wind catchers in Yazd.

D.Creating energy conservation labs at Ilam University.

  • 23、It is not uncommon for people to say they have no sense of direction. The sense of direction represents the ability to find one’s way. In other words, it is about getting from point A to point B without a hitch. The journey begins with determining the initial position using landmarks in the environment. It’s really about choosing a route and following it. It is also a question of testing that this same route is the correct one, with the mental representation of space or the help of tools such as maps. Finally, the ability to identify the point of arrival is obviously very important.

In a study published in 2009, scientist Giuseppe Iaria, a scientist of the University of Calgary (Canada), who specializes cognitive neural (认知神经) networks indicated that people lacking a sense of direction have a special condition: Developmental Topographical Disorientation (DTD).

The sense of direction requires large neural networks for proper functioning, according to the expert. However, the fact is that a majority of people are unable to put a map in their head while on the move. In her book Mind in Motion (2019), Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Stanford University (USA) Barbara Tversky explains how most people do it.

She introduces a combination of methods. It’s a mix of turn-by-turn directions, bird’s-eye views and general information in the form of maps. However, it should be noted that most medium-complexity navigation (导航) directions depend in part on the ability of people to understand the perspective of a map. In other words, people without a sense of direction follow a route in pieces. Thus, they have no expanded understanding for space and navigate their environment without any mental map of their destinations.

However, there is a solution, namely to guide the person through a series of short routes.

【1】What does the underlined phrase “without a hitch” in paragraph 1 mean?

    A.With ease.

    B.By oneself.

    C.In a short time.

    D.Without hesitation.

【2】What is the cause of going short of a sense of direction?

A.Being unable to put a map at hand.

    B.Expanded understanding for space.

C.Lack of guiding through short routes.

    D.Neural networks’ improper functioning.

【3】What could be a challenge for someone without a sense of direction?

    A.Reading a map.

    B.Forming a map in mind.

    C.Following a route in pieces.

D.Finishing a series of short routes.

【4】What can be inferred from the text?

A.Mental map contributes to the sense of direction.

B.Having no sense of direction is merely an excuse.

C.Most people have long routes in their mind.

D.People with a sense of direction don’t need a map.

  • 24、   Sophia Scott meant to spend the summer as an intern (实习生) shadowing doctors at the UCLA Concussion Clinic, as she had the year before. With COVID-19, the senior from Marymount High School had to put her plans on hold.

“Once everything fell through, I wanted to make sure I used my time as well as I could,” she explained.

Instead of using the summer focusing on herself, the 17-year-old from Los Angeles set about trying to help others. Recognizing that distance learning has been tricky for many, Scott decided to use her God-given academic skills to do something for others.

In a matter of weeks, she set up and launched Quaranteens, a free tutoring service that gathered together other like-minded teens to help out those students needing an academic boost in various subjects. She hoped that she and her group could really help the students get improved.

Impressively, Scott didn’t sit around waiting for students in difficulty to reach out for help. She set up a website and actively offered her services to charities focused on education, appreciating that there were many pupils struggling with the distance learning experience.

“A lot of the students I’ve worked with felt their school year was essentially cut off last March, which absolutely would have a negative impact on the year ahead. So a lot of the work we did was trying to help them catch up,” the new tutor shared.

This situation has been experienced around the world by many students, so the fact that this caring teen sought to remedy (挽救) the situation single-handedly makes her actions more inspiring.

Now with lots of children back in school, Scott hasn't finished her tutoring service. Instead, the experience has encouraged her and her team, which now totals an impressive 16 tutors, to continue offering their help.

“What is most satisfying to me is knowing that something small I'm doing now, like helping a kid become better at reading, could have such a wide range of impact on their education in the future.”

1What can we know about Sophia Scott?

A.She was not good at making plans. B.She was against distance learning.

C.She proved a professional doctor. D.She performed well academically.

2What does the underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

    A.Warn. B.Improvement.

    C.Praise. D.Comment.

3What did Sophia Scott and her team do for students?

A.They helped them catch up with their lessons.

B.They taught them how to find online materials.

C.They found personalized online sites for them.

D.They focused lessons ahead of their school year.

4What made Sophia Scott most pleased?

A.The students' deep and sincere gratitude to her.

B.Her own unique experience of distance learning.

C.Her positive influence on students' future learning.

D.The team for her tutoring service keeps expanding.

Why Screen Time Isn’t Always Bad

For the past few years, I have been researching the effects of one type of screen time on our behaviour: playing video games. It’s easy to see why video games are often dismissed as something harmful. Players seem absorbed by the action on the screen, as if the rest of the world doesn’t exist. Without further context, it’s hard to see games as anything other than digital junk food.

But context matters, and understanding the experience of the players can give us new understanding. Video games are an inherently social experience: they’ve been designed as cooperative. Take Mine-craft, for example. It does bring people together in all sorts of ways. Some play to connect with their friends, others share in the creative experience of building something monumental, and it’s even been used as an interactive tool to teach students basic chemistry. Elsewhere, studies have shown that video games can be used as a therapy to help soldiers overcome PTSD, and to help children with cancer stick to treatment.

As for the supposed negative aspects of video games, the story is largely the same. Studies that show a link between violent games and aggressive behaviour are often picked up in the news over other, more meaningful studies. Part of the problem is that it’s remarkably hard to test for aggression in the lab, and there’s also a great deal of flexibility in the way that researchers can analyse their data. But where the best methods are used, evidence suggests that playing violent games has fairly negligible effects on our behaviour.

Our understanding of the behavioural effects of video games - and screens more generally - isn’t yet complete. After all, these technologies are a relatively recent addition to our lives. Like many things, we can use them in good ways, and we can use them in bad ways. It’s up to us, as a society, to use their potential for good.
