二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The woman didn’t like us. We didn’t do anything to offend her and she didn’t know us but that didn’t matter. As new female teachers in the Emirati School, we Westerners greeted her every day. Whenever we saw her, she avoided eye contact with us. Eventually, some of us stopped trying to befriend her.

Well after 16 months in the school, we had a secret pal gifting. I drew her name from the glass jar and that meant she was my secret pal. My role was to buy her a gift and say something about her when we publicly acknowledged who our secret pal was.

I bought her a small rose arrangement and asked someone to write a message on it and then sent it to her room. She was so touched. Next day I sent a bottle of shampoo but I wrote the message in English because she needed to know her secret pal was a Westerner before the day of the “big reveal”. I also sent her a fragrant candle.

I had brought a few gifts from Ireland when I returned to the Middle East in September. I decided to gift her a silver coloured bangle.

Then came the day of the “big reveal”. We all gathered in the staff meeting room and everyone was excited. The host said, “Several days ago, when you received your gift, you wrote a few kind words about your secret pal and passed the gift to them.” She taught music in the school so I said, “My secret pal is someone who brings music to our ears every day of the week.” I didn’t even need to say her name because everyone knew exactly who I meant.

She came forward with a huge warm smile. She hugged me and kissed me on both cheeks and graciously accepted my gifts. I think everyone’s understanding of things is subjective, so we should have more communication with people around us.

1How did the woman respond to the Westerners greetings?

    A. She blamed them. B. She kept away from seeing their eyes.

    C. She treated them kindly. D. She avoided meeting them again.

2What was the author supposed to do after knowing the name of her secret friend?

    A. Prepare a gift for her. B. Write a speech about her.

    C. Find out who it is. D. Chat with her.

3Why did the author write the message in English in paragraph 3?

    A. To show other teachers her identity.

    B. To teach the woman some English.

    C. To let the woman know her nationality.

    D. To make other teachers better understand her intention.

4What was the woman’s attitude towards the author at last?

    A. Friendly. B. Doubtful.

    C. Regretful. D. Forgiving.

  • 22、As a child, I never considered myself an athlete at all as I was very uncoordinated (不协调的). However, I did love to run because I felt as if I was flying but this all changed two years ago when I suffered a knee injury. I was bedridden for two weeks and I had a difficult time moving even short distances. I literally cried myself on my way to the car for a few days.

When therapy wasn’t working well for me, I signed up for a hot yoga class for girls, Bikram Yoga to be exact. Starting a yoga practice was truly a godsend because it helped me gain strength in my knees but, most importantly, yoga helped me attain a more peaceful state of mind, body and spirit.

Since each class was heated to 105°F, every time I stepped foot in the yoga studio, I’d feel a surge (涌起) of negative thoughts come upon me like a big ocean wave. Some of these thoughts were, in the beginning of my practice, so strong that I walked out of the class several times. However, as the months passed by, I noticed that when I didn’t get swayed away by my negative thoughts, I could stay in the hot room for longer.

After 3-4 months of practicing hot yoga, my arms and legs were beginning to get definition. I also woke up with so much more energy than I had before starting my yoga practice and I gradually started shedding the pounds from my body. Yoga literally made me feel as if I’d taken a shot of energy drink and just gave me that burst that helped my knees heal and made my overall health better.

As I saw some of my classmates do poses that looked appealing to me, I started to think maybe I could do them too. Therefore, yoga helped show me that I have no real limitations physically unless I set those limitations myself through eating junk and thinking in negative limiting terms.

Also, practicing yoga in front of a mirror helped me connect with myself and practicing with a group of people really helped me to feel a greater sense of connection with humanity whereas before I didn’t. Overall, this yoga practice has helped me to see I’m part of a bigger picture in life!

【1】What once depressed the author terribly?

    A.Her inability to walk.

【3】What difficulty did the author meet while attending each yoga class?

D.Lack of confidence prevented the author doing yoga.

【4】What can we learn about the author from paragraph 4?

D.To share with readers her experience in taking yoga classes.

  • 23、The U. S. Postal Service (USPS) is losing billions of dollars a year. The government company that delivers "small mail" is losing out to email and other types of electronic communication. First-class mail amount fell from a high point of 104 million pieces in 2000 to just 64 million pieces by 2014.

Congress permits the 600.000-empIoyee USPS to hold a monopoly (垄断) over first-class and standard mail. The company pays no federal, state or local taxes; pays no vehicle fees; and is free from many regulations on other businesses. Despite these advantages, the USPS has lost $52 billion since 2007, and will continue losing money without major reforms.

The problem is that Congress is preventing the USPS from reducing costs as its sales decline, and is blocking efforts to end Saturday service and close unneeded post office locations. USPS also has a costly union-dominated workforce that slows the introduction of new ideas or methods down. USPS workers earn significantly higher payment than comparable private-sector workers. The answer is to privatize the USPS and open postal markets to competition. With the rise of the Internet, the argument that mail is a natural monopoly that needs government protection is weaker than ever.

Other countries facing declining letter amounts have made reforms Germany and the Netherlands privatized their national postal companies over a decade ago, and other European countries have followed suit. Britain floated shares of the Royal Mail on its stock exchange in 2013. Some countries, such us Sweden and New Zealand, have not privatized their national postal companies, but they have opened them up to competition.

These reforms have driven efficiency improvements in all of these countries. Additional number of workers have been reduced, productivity has risen and consumers have benefited. Also, note that cost-cutting measures—such as closing tone post offices—are good for both the economy and the environment.

Privatization and competition also encourage new changes. When the USPS monopoly over "extremely urgent" mail was stopped in 1979, we saw an explosion in efficient overnight private delivery by firms such as FedEx.

The government needs to wake up to changing technology, study postal reforms abroad and let businessmen reinvent our out-of-date postal system.

【1】What do we know about the USPS?

    A. Its great competitor is the delivery firm FedEx.

    B. It is an old public service open to competitions.

    C. Its employees don't pay federal, state or local taxes.

    D. It has complete control of first-class and standard mail.

    A. explain the procedures of reform to the USPS

    B. show the advantages of private postal services

    C. set some examples for the government to learn from

    D. prove the situation is very common around the world

【3The author probably that the USPS __________.

    A. needs government’s protection as ever

    B. can work together with other businesses

    C. must be replaced by international companies

    D. should be sold out and become a private service

【4】Which of the following shows the development of ideas in this passage?

    A. B.

    C. D.

  • 24、On one day of May, when Jared Garcia got home from work, he opened the fridge and saw four different pizza boxes from four different restaurants. “It’s pretty embarrassing, but it’s the truth,” Jared said.

At 129 kilograms, the 27-year-old would sit on the couch watching TV, without energy left after conquering the workday. Late-night snacks included popcorn and ice cream. Gradually, his clothes felt like getting smaller every time he did laundry. Also, Jared missed the feeling he got when he used to play sports as a teenager.

Together, he and his girlfriend, Bella MacDonald, decided to make a change to lifestyle. They had talked about doing it before, but this time, it stuck. They didn’t want to look back 20 years from now realizing they should have made changes to be healthier then.

First, they would start going to the gym. But they didn’t want to put in the hours of fitness without having the right diet to bring up their energy levels. They would eat their meals between 8 am and 6 pm each day. This helped them kick the late-night snacking habit. “You stop mindless eating in the evening. You’re also eating in sync (同步) with your circadian rhythm (昼夜节律), which is more favorable for weight loss,” said Jared.

They immediately noticed their energy levels started to pick back up as they started eating pizza for proteins like turkey alongside vegetables. “When we’re eating only during a ten-hour period, we do want to follow good nutritional guidelines, including protein, fiber, enough fluids in our diet as well,” Jared said.

Jared loved eating healthier options, but always had a hard time getting up to go to the gym. For Bella, food was a weakness, but she was excited to get up and work out. Anyway, they would stay the course.

    A.Paid off.

    B.Started early.

A.They stopped getting proteins and fiber.

B.They tried to find out their weaknesses.

    C.They avoided eating late-night snacks.

D.They asked friends to work out together.

【4】How was Jared and Bella’s losing weight?

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

A new study suggests many Americans have not visited the most popular places of interest around the country or even in their hometown.

The study found that 25 percent of Americans have yet to visit "iconic landmarks" in their own cities. Twenty-three percent said they had not visited any of the nation’s natural wonders, famous buildings or historic battlefields.

The study was a project of the research service OnePoll and Zipcar, a car-sharing company.

Researchers questioned 2,000 Americans. Only 33 percent of them said they had been to Niagara Falls and just 28 percent had been to Arizona’s Grand Canyon. The study showed that only 30 percent had been to New York’s Empire State Building. Only 22 percent had ever visited the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Many Americans say they would like to travel more. More than half of those questioned said they would like to get out more. Forty-nine percent reported being "creatures of habit." By that, they mean they generally do the same things in the same way. That would leave little time to visit local or national landmarks.

The researchers found that the main reasons keeping Americans from exploring their cities or the country were money, lack of time and a lack of good transportation.

On social media, one Twitter user reacting to the study named a few reasons for not visiting famous places. The writer noted that “most of us don’t get paid days off, get punished for taking a day off, or simply can’t afford to visit anything or go anywhere anymore."

The Twitter user added, "Childcare costs more than College, College Loans costs more than a mortgage payment, and jobs don’t even pay for one of those things.”

The study found that three of the places Americans wanted to visit were Grand Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park and the Statue of Liberty.

The researchers also found that, on average, Americans go to a new coffee shop every five months, and a new restaurant every four months. They also spent time at a lake or near the ocean once every six months, and go to a park every five months.
