  • 21、According to US national park researchers, microplastic particles (微粒) equal to as many as 300 million plastic water bottles are raining down on the Grand Canyon.

In a survey of 11 remote western places, also including the Great Basin and Craters of the Moon national parks, researchers discovered more than 1000 tons of microplastic particles that had traveled through the atmosphere via rain or water particles.

Most microplastics are from larger pieces of plastic. Since plastics don’t degrade (降解), plastics that end up in waste piles or landfills break down into microparticles and make their way through the Earth’s atmosphere, soil and water systemics.

Janice Brahney, lead researcher at Utah State University, said, “Plastics could be deposited (沉降), readmitted to the atmosphere again, transported for some time…who knows how many times, and who knows how far they’ve traveled?”

Brahney’s team found that so-called wet microplastics, named for the way they are transported, are most likely disturbed by a storm and swept up into the atmosphere, having originated in larger urban areas. By comparison, the spreading patterns of dry microplastics is the same as dust and can travel long distances, often across continents.

Brahney warned that new findings show an urgent need to reduce plastic pollution. Although their full effects on the human body are still unknown, scientists are starting to raise public health concerns over microplastic particles: They’re small enough to stay in lung tissue, causing damage and, in some cases of routine exposure, can lead to asthma and cancer.

Scientists have also found that microplastic particles affect the temperature adjustment function of the soil, leading to losses in plant life.

Brahney believes that her research is just the beginning of understanding how microplastics move through ecosystems.

“Learning about plastics and how they don’t degrade seems like, ‘Oh my God, we should have been expecting this: they’ re just made into these tiny sizes, they could certainly be carried by the wind,” Brahney said.

“We’ve just been missing it,” she added.

【1】The direct cause of the microplastic rain is that_________.

  • 22、Earlier this month, two rock climbers achieved what many thought impossible: They climbed up the 3,000-foot-high Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park without specialized equipment. Climbing without this equipment is called“free-climbing.”Until now, no one had free-climbed to the top of the rock face, which is a part of the mountain EI Capitan.

El Capitan, which means“the captain”or“the chief”in Spanish, has always presented a challenge to climbers. But the Dawn Wall, on the mountains southeast face, is a particularly difficult route to the summit (顶峰). It is a rock formation that is both steep and relatively smooth. This makes free-climbing the rock face seem almost impossible.

About seven years ago, professional climber Tommy Caldwell spotted a possible route up the wall. It took years of planning and preparation, but this month, Caldwell, 36, and his friend Kevin Jorgeson, 30, finally make the climb.

Free climbers do use ropes and other basic safety equipment to catch them if they fall and Caldwell and Jorgeson fell often. Before starting their climb, they broke down their route into 32 sections. Each section was based on a rope length called a“pitch.”The rope was secured into the rock face to catch the climbers if they fell.

Caldwell and Jorgesons goal was to climb the Dawn Wall without returning to the ground. If they fell, they had to start that pitch all over again. The two men started climbing on December 27. They slept in hanging tents, and a team of friends brought them food each day.

The men had spent years rehearsing (排练) the movements it would take to get through each pitch. They made it through the fist half of the climb relatively easily. But halfway up, Jorgeson ran into trouble. In one difficult spot, he fell each time he attempted to climb. After 10 days of trying, Jorgeson finally made it to the next pitch.

Getting through that troublesome pitch gave both climbers renewed energy. They finished the rest of the climb five days later, on January 14.

【1】What does Paragraph 2 mainly explain?

A.Why the Dawn Wall is a hard challenge.

B.Why people prefer climbing El Capitan.

C.How to free-climb the Dawn Wall.

D.How El Capitan got its name.

【2】To climb Yosemites Dawn Wall, Caldwell and Jorgeson .

    A. received one years training

    B. chose the nearest route

    C. made thoughtful preparations

    D. used special equipment

【3】What can we learn about this world, s toughest climb?

    A.It includes 32 different routes.

B.It is also the world, s highest climb.

C.It was once completed by Caldwell 7 years ago.

D.It took the two climbers 19 days to get to the top.

【4】Which of the following words can best describe Jorgeson?

    A.Proud but patient.

    B.Cautious and friendly.

    C.Brave and determined.

    D.Imaginative but half-hearted.

  • 23、   For most students, writing more clearly persuasively presents a great challenge. 1Few of them, though, focus on filling their essays with necessary information and details, let alone organizing the information.

In order to make an essay convincing, students should know how to select the necessary information and details. 2 Information that can help students clarify and better convey their ideas is certainly important. To figure out what this is, you should make sure you understand the theme of the essay. 3

Suppose you were asked to write an essay describing a memorable event in your life. You should start off by thinking about the events you’ve experienced, and why a particular event is especially memorable to you. 4 While writing the essay, you should constantly remind yourself that since the event must be a memorable one, you should pay attention to describing the details that make it so special.

5 Indeed, before you include any information in your essay, you should think about how to link reasons, examples and details together before you start writing. Only then will you be able to produce a strong and coherent (连贯的) essay.

A.But how do you know what to include?

B.Good writing is sure to leave a deep impression on the readers.

C.Through this process, you can choose a meaningful experience.

D.You can begin with a question, such as why I’m writing this essay.

E.Many can write grammatically correct sentences and choose proper words.

F.However, even if you think of good reasons and examples, you must try to organize your essay well.

G.Only after clearly understanding the topic can you choose proper reasons and examples to support your ideas.

  • 24、A Swiss company that developed technology to capture (捕获) carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the air says it has launched the world’s largest plant to do so in Iceland. The company said the plant began operations on Wednesday.

The company partnered with Icelandic carbon storage provider Carbfix on the project. It says the new plant called Orca whose name is based on the Icelandic word for energy, Oirka, is designed to capture up to 3,600 metric tons of CO2 per year. That is the same amount of CO2 produced by about 790 automobiles during a year.

The International Energy Agency, IEA, estimates that this year, the amount of CO2 emissions (排放) worldwide will rise 1.5 billion metric tons to a total of 33 billion metric tons. Direct air capture is one of the few technologies that can remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere. Many scientists see the process as critical to limiting harmful pollutant emissions. Such emissions are caused mainly by human activities. They can trap heat in the atmosphere and create higher temperatures. Many scientists blame this warming for increased heatwaves, wildfires, floods and rising sea levels across the world.

Orca uses eight large containers that look like those used in the shipping industry. A series of high-tech filters (过滤器) and blowers attached to the containers capture CO2. The captured carbon is then mixed with water and deposited deep underground, where it slowly turns into rock. Both technologies are powered by renewable energy from a nearby geothermal (地热) plant.

Direct air capture is still a new and costly technology. But developers hope to bring down the price by increasing operations as more companies and individuals seek the technology. Currently, there are 15 direct air capture plants operating worldwide. The American oil company Occidental is currently developing the largest direct air capture center. It aims to pull 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from the air around some of its Texas oilfields.

    【1】What is Orca?

    A.A kind of energy.

    B.A Swiss company.

    C.A high-tech factory.

    D.A developed technology.

【2】What do scientists think of direct air capture?

A.It can stop global temperature rising.

B.It is crucial to deal with air pollution.

C.It is of great use for disaster prediction.

D.It can limit the amounts of gases in the air.

【3】What does the underlined word “deposited” in Paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Stored.

    B.Discovered.

    C.Recycled.

    D.Exposed.

【4】What can we infer about direct air capture from the last paragraph?

    A.It will increase oil production.

B.It has shown little practical value.

C.It costs too much to improve it.

D.It would have a bright future.

  • 25、An interesting study found capuchin monkeys (僧帽猴), like humans, are guided by social emotions. Try paying one monkey with grapes and another with cucumbers for the _______ amount of work and you may be surprised at the results! The monkey who got the cucumbers will probably _______ working for you. He may even throw out the cucumbers, even though monkeys are usually _______ to receive them, says Sarah Brosnan, a psychology professor at Georgia State University.

That experiment by Brosnan and Frans de Wall published in 2003 in Nature was one of the first to show that animals may have an assessment for _______ — a moral sense that many researchers previously thought only humans possessed. Since then, many results have suggested that animals — particularly those that depend on _______ for their survival may have an inborn sense of justice.

Social animals, which are interdependent for a living, will _______ share rewards with others who worked toward the same goal. “The built-in sense didn’t develop first in humans. It’s possibly something that began in social species, and _______ to us.” Brosnan said in an interview.

One study _______ that some animals particularly the ones that hunt together divide up the rewards. Another study even finds that animals will occasionally deliver a better reward to a partner than they themselves _______. In research by Brosnan and her colleagues published in American Journal of Primatology, two capuchin monkeys had to work together to pull a plate of food to their cages. But before they began pulling, the monkeys had to decide which one would get a grape and which one would get an apple slice. ________ fighting over the grape or always letting the leading monkey eat it, the animals generally vary roles on the way, so they both earned some grapes and some apple slices, Brosnan found. In cases where the ________ monkey always got the good food, the other monkey were likely to give up participating. More often than not, it preferred to ________ a reward than be paid unfairly.

According to Brosnan, that tendency to share rewards fairly probably developed as a result of the way capuchins work together to hunt. “If we are hunting and I am not giving you much of the kill, you would be better off finding another ________,” she says.

However, interpreting animal behavior through human eyes can be ________, observes Marc Hauser, a Harvard psychology professor and evolutionary biologist. In the cucumber-grape study, for example, the monkeys could have ________ the cucumbers simply because they were annoyed that they didn’t get a grape once they saw it.
