22、 Each year, millions of children around the world are unable to go to school. To draw attention to this widespread problem, the United Nations(UN)is putting education first. Recently, the UN screened a documentary film called Back to School. The film is the second in a series of documentaries(纪录片)for the project Time for School.
These films follow seven children from seven different countries. This 12-year project began in 2006,when the children first started school. "This is something we could do to help the education crisis in the world,"said producer and writer Judy Katz. “Documentary film-makers can get deeply involved in a problem and do something about it.”
More than 100 million children will never set foot in a school. Sixty percent of those children are girls. Cheryl Faye, head of the UN Girls Education Initiative, spoke about the many factors that prevent girls from getting an education. One problem is the long distance many children must travel to get to school. Also, girls in many cultures are traditionally expected to marry early and work to help their families. “We need to make a special effort for girls,”Faye said.
As part of the UN's Millennium goals, the organization wants every single child to get at least an elementary education by 2018.
Students from Lawrence Middle School in New York were deeply moved after they saw the film. The seventh grade class is raising money to help build a library on the outskirts of Nairobi,Kenya(肯尼亚),where Joab-a child in the documentary-lives. The class teacher,Karen Weiner, and the class are known in their school as the “Kenya crew”. All the kids were really happy to support Joab and said they felt great about their fund-raising efforts. Like the seventh graders at Lawrence Middle School, kids can work together to make a difference in places like Nairobi. By raising money for education, kids can help children on the other side of the world have a chance of a better, happier life.

23、Soil creates life from death. The production of more than 95% of the food we eat relies on soil. But this precious resource is eroding (侵蚀) at a global average of 13.5 tons per hectare per year. Instead of nourishing crops, fertile topsoil is washed and blown away, ending up in inconvenient places such as ditches and oceans.
Jo Handelsman and Kayla Cohen try to make readers care about soil in A World Without Soil. Their prologue (前言) takes the form of a letter to the government. With the letter, they hope to make soil management a federal priority. The following chapters cover the basic science of soil as well as the causes and consequences of its erosion. In the last part of the book, the authors turn to possible solutions—many of them simple, and some centuries old. They describe about traditional soil management techniques, including planting diverse crops in rotation (轮种), increasing organic content, ploughing as little as possible, etc. With these techniques, farmers are able to produce rich agricultural production while maintaining deep banks of fertile soil.
Why, then, is fertile soil being allowed to be washed and blown away? The answer, not surprisingly, rests in global capitalism. Farmers' profit is thin, forcing farmers to plant the highest-profit crop from field to field every season. To ensure food security, Handelsman and Cohen urge the world to demand a real top-down change in how agricultural production is managed. "The burden of protecting soil cannot be shifted to farmers and environmental activists," they note. Governments must begin to move towards a model in which farmers are less independent business people growing and selling food, and more government-supported land workers managing both food production and soil protection. This should be the core of agriculture.
Our land and soil are too precious to be destroyed by the market price of crops. We must invest deeply and thoughtfully in our farmers so that they can invest deeply and thoughtfully in the land. This is the future of farming.

24、I was eleven years old when I spotted my neighbour, Julie, working in her garden. “There’s a hedge(树篱)growing over the pathway near here,” Julie said. “It’s become so overgrown. I was planning to cut it back myself. Would you like to help out?” The following Sunday, we wheeled Julie’s garden bin down to the hedge and reduced it.
We posted photos of our handiwork on Our Malmesbury, our local Facebook Group. One person, a wheelchair user, was so grateful that they didn’t have to go on the road anymore to pass the hedge. The comments and reactions just kept on coming. The whole town of Malmesbury in Wilts hire seemed to welcome our team spirit and felt inspired to follow our lead. Many people raised their hands to volunteer and do more to keep our town tidy. This was the beginning of many community projects completed by volunteers in our community.
With many willing hands, our town has transformed. Before, the town looked a bit run-down, but now, the place looks cleaner and tidier.
When we first started, everything was done out of my parents’ garage. But as time went on, donations came in from the local community. Our garage got filled up so quickly with brushes, gardening tools, and even donated power tools like leaf blowers. It got so big that we had to move this all to Julie’s spare garage.
I created a Facebook page and website to support our projects. Our Facebook page ‘Helping the Community of Malmesbury’ currently sits at 669 members and is a place for all the locals to share what litter picking and cleaning up they have been up to. When community members plan a clean-up, they can contact us via the website to access any tools and equipment they need to complete a project.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Never give up! Never give up!” chanted(吟唱)my two young children, Max and Charley, as they marched barefoot behind their grandmother Mimi. My mom Mimi was leading Max and Charley on another adventure, straight off the beach where they’d spent the day building sand castles and playing in the waves. This time, they were seeking an ice-cream truck.
Over the years, Mimi had become our family’s tower of positivity. It wasn’t a title she earned without effort, however. Having been a single mother at only forty years old and left to raise me and my ten-year-old brother alone, she faced countless challenges. She had been the one who had to make the decision to remove our dad from life support fourteen days after he was in a car accident.
My mom could have lived under a black cloud. Instead, she challenged herself to find joy every day. She was always up for a new challenge, whether that was hiking across the high mountaintop in Austria to get a better view of the breathtaking beauty or signing up for tap-dancing classes at fifty. Leading by example, Mom taught us just how much one could accomplish with a positive attitude.
She has taken the same approach in her relationship with her grandchildren. Before starting her adventure with Max and Charley on that hot July afternoon, Mimi heard the familiar clang(叮当声)of the ice-cream man's bell from her beach chair. She turned and saw him briefly, spotting his shining green shirt and catching the gleam(闪光)of his waving bell before he turned and disappeared. Happily, the ice-cream man’s visit was a daily occurrence on the beach, although the time between the sound of his bell and the departure of his truck wasn’t long. One must be quick to catch him.
Max and Charley were disappointed when they didn’t catch him in time that day. Mimi smiled and said, “Never give up!” She explained that the truck might be gone, but they could hurry off to find it at its next stop.
