  • 21、   With the increasing popularity of climbing gyms and the addition of climbing to the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo, interest is booming. Here are some U.S. rock climbing spots that are welcome to newer climbers.

    Horse Pens 40, Steele, Alabama

These natural rock shelters in the Appalachian foothills are renowned for their bouldering, a type of rock climbing without ropes and safety belts. It’s one of the top bouldering spots in the United States, a very unique little ecosystem there. Located about an hour north of Birmingham, it’s particularly popular in the fall when it hosts the final event.

    Bishop, California

This area on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains offers a series of climbing options: bouldering; sport climbing, which uses anchors(锚) permanently fixed in the rock; and traditional climbing, which has climbers using removable protection devices.

    Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

It’s possible to climb Grand Teton, the towering peak(山峰) which gives its name to the park. A guided trip up the 13,770-foot mountain requires several climbing disciplines, but offers an incredible reward: a view of 14 different mountain ranges in four states.

    Smith Rock State Park, Oregon

Located about 25 miles north of Bend, this spot became popular in the 1980s and is considered the birthplace of American sport climbing, Santella says. The world’s top climbers come to try the difficult routes here. It also has a large climbing community with instructors and guides.

【1】Which state would you go if you want to experience more kinds of climbing?

    A.Alabama.

    B.California.

    C.Wyoming.

    D.Oregon.

【2】Where can you enjoy the sight of mountain ranges in several states?

    A.Horse Pens 40.

    B.Bishop.

    C.Grand Teton National Park.

    D.Smith Rock State Park.

【3】What do Grand Teton National Park and Smith Rock State Park have in common?

    A.They both have guides.

B.They got famous in the 1980s.

C.Their names come from the peaks.

D.They have set strict climbing rules.

  • 22、All routes to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) degrees run through calculus (微积分) classes. Each year, thousands of college students take introductory calculus. But only a small number ultimately complete a STEM degree, and research about why students abandon such degrees suggests that traditional calculus courses are one of the reasons. With scientific understanding and innovation increasingly central to solving 21st-century problems, this loss of talent is something society can ill afford.

Math departments alone are unlikely to solve this dilemma. Several of the promising calculus reforms were spearheaded by professors outside of math departments. STEM faculty are prioritizing cooperation across disciplines to transform math classes to cultivate a diverse generation of STEM researchers and professionals.

This is not uncharted territory. In 2013, life sciences faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles, developed a two-course sequence that covers classic calculus topics, but also emphasizes their application in a biological context. Creating this course, Mathematics for Life Scientists, wasn’t easy. The life sciences faculty involved, none of whom had a joint appointment with the math department, said they turned to designing the course themselves after math faculty rejected their request for cooperation.

In Ohio, Wright State University’s Engineering departments also revised math offerings. Rather than changing the content of the calculus course, they focused on preparing students for calculus by emphasizing “engineering motivation for math.” The approach enhanced opportunities for students with weaker math backgrounds to succeed in engineering and doubled the average graduation rate of engineering students without reducing the average grade of graduates. Math learning is fundamental to all STEM fields, but the opposite also appears to be true.

【1】What problem is mentioned in paragraph 1?

    A.Increasing STEM dropout rate.

    B.The reform of calculus courses.

    C.Shrinking admission to STEM majors.

D.The shaken belief in the role of calculus.

【2】What does “spearheaded” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.challenged

    B.evaluated

    C.cancelled

    D.initiated

【3】What do we know about the calculus course reform according to the text?

A.STEM departments made calculus content easier to improve students’ grades.

B.Math departments sought cooperation with STEM counterparts to urge reforms.

C.Placing calculus learning in specific STEM contexts is a workable approach.

D.Removing calculus is the key to increasing graduation rate of STEM students.

【4】What does “the opposite” in the last paragraph refer to?

A.The STEM fields may be the foundation of other science subjects.

B.The STEM fields may be central to making math learning effective.

C.Math learning may set barrier for science study in the STEM fields.

D.Math learning may make way for science study in the STEM fields.

  • 23、   Renewable energy projects, including onshore and offshore wind and solar farms, have so far been subsidized (资助) by government support schemes. This has led to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.

However, the most recently approved offshore wind projects will most likely operate with ‘negative subsidies’ — paying money back to the government. The money will go towards reducing household energy bills as the offshore wind farms start producing power in the mid-2020s.

This is the conclusion of an analysis by an international team led by Imperial College London researchers published today in Nature Energy.

Lead researcher Dr Malte Jansen, from the Centre for Environmental Policy at Imperial, said: “Offshore wind power will soon be so cheap to produce that it will undercut fossil-fueled power stations and may be the cheapest form of energy for the UK. Energy subsidies used to push up energy bills, but within a few years cheap renewable energy will see them brought down for the first time. This is an astonishing development.”

The analysis for five countries in Europe, including the UK, focused on a series of government auctions (拍卖) for offshore wind farms between February 2015 and September 2019. Companies that want to build wind farms bid in the auctions by stating the price at which they will sell the energy they produce to the government.

These are known as ‘contracts for difference’ or CfDs. If a company’s bid is higher than the wholesale electricity price on the UK market once the wind farm is up and running, then the company will receive a subsidy from the government to top up the price.

However, if the stated price (规定价格) is less than the wholesale price, then the company will pay the government back the difference. This payback is then passed through to consumer’s energy bills, reducing the amount that homes and businesses will pay for electricity.

The winning companies said they could build new offshore wind farms for around £40 per megawatt hour (MWh) of power. This was a new record set by these wind farms with bids 30 percent lower than just two years earlier.

【1】What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Offshore wind farms to be built in the UK could reduce household energy bills by producing electricity very cheaply.

B.Offshore wind farms will not be subsidized by government in the near future.

    C.The importance of CfDs.

    D.The operation of negative subsidies.

【2】According to Paragraph 2, offshore wind farms ________.

A.will stop producing power in the mid-2020s

B.are paying money back to the government

C.will help reduce household energy bills

D.will all operate with ‘negative subsidies’

【3】The underlined words “top up” in Paragraph 6 probably mean ________.

    A.make up

    B.take up

    C.cover

    D.fill up

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.The renewable energy projects will lead to some to complain that clean energy is pushing up bills.

B.The company whose bid is less than the wholesale electricity price will receive a subsidy.

C.The stated electricity price is now higher than the wholesale electricity price.

D.Fossil-fueled power will be soon produced cheaply.

  • 24、For as long as I can remember, my body and I have shared a relationship of discontent. Growing up, I was skinnier than the other kids and at five I was told I wasn't attractive and that I must put on some weight. But no matter how much I ate, I stayed thin for years until adolescence. Then I started putting on weight almost immediately. I remember feeling happy as I began to fill out. However, my joy didn't last long.

I was thirteen when I was first called fat. Friends and neighbours would make jokes on my big size. As I entered my late teens, I had completely lost confidence in my body and, subsequently, in myself. Having failed to live up to conventional beauty standards, I was convinced that if I wanted to be loved, I needed to offer more, doing anything to please everyone around.

I entered adulthood thinking I wasn't “enough”—an idea that was seeded not only by the fact that “skinny” is celebrated, but also by the language associated with accounts of losing weight—selfimprovement, discipline—all virtues. Being fat quickly categorizes you as lazy and undisciplined. Consumed by thoughts of the way my body looked, I didn't notice the other ways my body needed attention. I failed to realize, for example, that my period was much heavier and more painful than ever before. Actually I developed a rare disease and later I had two surgeries.

I was always made to feel that my weight was the root of a lot of problems in my life; I have learnt this is not true. After a lot of selfreflection and some professional help, I realized I never learnt to like myself. While two decades of selfhatred cannot be undone overnight, I have taken first steps to acceptance.

I am now much lighter than before, in body and mind. There are days I find voices on social media saying I am too fat to be loved or to be worthy, but I am learning not to focus on that thought for long. As long as I like myself, just the way I am, opinions at the end of the day are just water off a duck's back.

【1】What can we learn about the author from the first two paragraphs?

A.She could change her weight at will.

B.She had different beauty standards from others.

C.She tried to love others to build her confidence.

D.She was greatly influenced by others' opinions.

【2】Why did the author think she wasn't “enough”?

    A.She was poorly disciplined.

    B.She failed to celebrate “skinny”.

C.She was labelled as lazy for her weight.

D.She put on more weight after entering adulthood.

【3】What caused the author to make a change?

    A.Her lighter body.

    B.A troublesome illness.

    C.Popular beauty standards.

    D.Others' critical comments.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.Beauty matters.

    B.Opinions vary.

    C.Worth your weight.

    D.Beyond your limits.
