二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、“If we can set it up so you can’t unlock your phone unless you’ve got the right fingerprint(指纹),” Barack Obama asked last Tuesday, “why can’t we do the same thing for our guns?” For this reasonable-sounding question, the president was applauded throughout the media.

As it happens, though, there is a good answer to this question: there is no market for guns that work just some of the time. Guns are simple things designed to operate as easily and reliably as possible. The introduction of electronics eats away this simplicity, and to a degree that is absolutely unacceptable to the consumer. As President Obama well knows, the fingerprint software on his phone works rather erratically: Often it takes a user two or three tries to log in; occasionally, it falls asleep deeply and obeys the password. When this happens on an phone, the user is mildly inconvenienced. If this were to happen on a gun, the user would be dead. There is a reason that modern smartphones put the camera function outside of the authentication(认证) process.

How could we possibly think that guns are the same as other commercial products? It is true that, say, cars have become considerably safer over the last few decades; true, too, that “research” has contributed to this improvement. But it matters enormously that a car is not intended to hurt people, and that in a perfect world nobody would ever be injured by one. Can we say the same of guns? Of course not. Guns are killing machines, designed explicitly to do damage to living things. In fact, they have no other purpose. As such, the salient question before any free people is not “are guns dangerous?”, they are, but “who gets them, and why?”

This is not to say that nothing at all can be done to improve public safety. On an individual level, gun owners should do everything to ensure that their guns are kept away from children, and, where possible, they should train themselves in case they are ever called upon to shoot in anger. At the national level, the combination of better policing and economic growth can help to reduce crime—and, indeed, it has. In 1993, gun crime was more than twice as common as it is now, and there were many fewer guns in circulation. Ugly as it is in its own right, that we have reached the point at which two-thirds of all guns-related deaths are deliberately self-inflicted is a small victory.

How to address those deaths that remain? That is a tricky one. I do not know the answer, and nor, frankly, does anybody else. But selling fantasies to the ignorant is not going to cut it.

【1】What does the writer mainly argue in this passage?

    A. Gun crime has been greatly reduced.

    B. The idea of smart guns is not realistic.

    C. Gun control will not succeed in America.

    D. Guns-related deaths deserve public attention.

2The underlined word “erratically” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.

    A. with effectiveness

    B. with passion and energy

    C. in an unpredictable manner

    D. in a reasonable and fair way

3The writer supports his ideas in Paragraphs 2 and 3 mainly by ________.

    A. analyzing statistics

    B. presenting problems and solutions

    C. quoting the authorities

    D. making comparisons and contrasts

4Which of the following might the writer NOT agree with?

    A. Few know how to deal with guns-related deaths.

    B. Efforts to improve public safety have partly paid off.

    C. The nature of guns distinguishes them from other products.

    D. Guns using fingerprint software can risk the lives of the users.

  • 23、   High-pitched and yet distinct, the sound of a voice calling the name “Amy” is unmistakable. But this isn't a human cry—it's the voice of a killer whale called Wikie.

New research reveals that orcas are able to imitate human speech, saying words such as "hello", "one, two" and “bye bye”. The study also shows that the creatures are able to copy unfamiliar sounds produced by other orcas.

Writing in the journal Biological Sciences, researchers from institutions in Germany, UK, Spain and Chile, describe how they carried out the latest research with Wikie, a 14-year-old female orca living in an aquarium in France.

After first brushing up Wikie's grasp of the “copy” command, she was trained to imitate three familiar orca sounds made by her 3-year-old Moana. Wikie was then additionally exposed to five orca sounds she had never heard before, including noises sounding like a creaking door. Finally, Wikie was exposed to a human making three of the orca sounds, as well as six human sounds, including “hello”, “Amy”, “ah ha”, “one, two” and “bye bye”.

The team found that Wikie was often quickly able to copy the sounds, whether from an orca or a human, with all of the novel noises copied within 17 trials. What's more, two human sounds and all of the human-produced orca sounds were managed on the first attempt—although only one human sound "hello" was correctly produced more than 50% of the time on subsequent trials.

The creatures are already known for their ability to copy the movements of other orcas, with some reports suggesting they can also copy the sounds of bottlenose dolphins and sea lions after several trials.

Scientists say the discovery helps to cast light on how different groups of wild killer whales have ended up with distinct accents, adding weight to the idea that they are the result of imitation between orcas.

【1】What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?

    A.To analyze orcas' speech abilities.

B.To highlight the conservation of the orca.

C.To inform us of orcas' ability to imitate sounds.

D.To convince us of the intelligence of the orca.

【2】What's the main idea of the fourth paragraph?

    A.The process of the research.

    B.The outcome of the research.

    C.The purpose of the research.

    D.The significance of the research.

【3】Which of the following was the easiest for Wikie to copy?

    A.The six human sounds.

    B.All the new orca sounds.

    C.Human-produced orca sounds.

    D.Dolphin and sea lion sounds.

【4】What may the discovery help explain?

    A.Why orcas imitate human speech.

    B.Why orcas have different accents.

    C.How orcas copy others' movements.

    D.How orcas communicate with others.

  • 24、   Vegetable gardens may not be as visually pleasing as the variety of flowers, but Floridians looking to save some green by growing their own salad fixings can soon do so without fear. Gov. Ron DeSantis this week signed a law that bans local governments from carrying orders against homeowners from raising veggies in their yards.

The law, which takes effect July 1, puts an end to that particular power of towns and cities across the state to prohibit vegetable gardens for “aesthetic(审美的)purposes”.

The issue became a cause after a couple living in Miami Shores Village opposed the decision of a $ 50 a day fine for growing vegetables in their front yard, as they’d done for years.

Hermine Ricketts and her husband Tom Carroll fought City Hall in a case that wound its way up the state’s court system, with judges consistently ruling against their money-saving and health-conscious project.

After the Florida Supreme Court ruled in favor of Miami Shores’ right to control design and landscaping standards, the couple replaced their vegetables with pink flamingos (红鹳花) .

Their cause was not lost, however. State lawmakers proposed and passed a law that effectively voids the court rulings, with Rob Bradley, who sponsored the bill, reportedly calling the village’s action a “vast overreach”.

The lawmaker noted the difficulty that many families experience getting fresh and affordable food, calling bans against vegetable and fruit gardens ridiculous.

About a third of all households in the U. S. grow some of their own food, according to the National Gardening Association. The group says a 600-square-foot garden that costs around $ 70 a year to keep can grow 300 pounds of fresh produce worth about $ 600 annually.

1Why will some Floridians plant salad fixings?

A.To protect the environment. B.To beautify their home.

C.To build their own gardens. D.To cut daily expenses.

2What can be known about the couple from the passage?

    A.They started a public health-conscious campaign.

B.They never gave in to the Miami Shores’ demand .

C.They were fined $50 a day by Miami Shores Village.

D.They were not backed by the Florida Supreme Court.

3What does the underlined word “voids” in paragraph 6 mean?

    A.Hides. B.Cancels.

    C.Prevents. D.Values.

4What does Rob Bradley think of the couple’s action probably?

    A.It’s sensible. B.It’s ridiculous.

    C.It’s ambitious. D.It’s costly.
