21、Overpopulation is a big problem in every region of the world today. 【1】 Earth’s population is about 6.5 billion people. This number is growing every day. Despite improvements in birth control, in just 50 years, the population will be almost 9 billion.
Many people worry that the Earth won’t have enough resources to support so many people. One major reason for this is that wasting resources and polluting have become habitual behaviors. Industrial output results in polluting the air with dangerous fumes. 【2】 It’s possible that the Earth may become so damaged that it cannot support a large population of humans.
【3】 Even today, many people feed on mere scraps of food and little water. In 50 years, many experts worry that huge numbers of people will starve to death.
People are realizing they can no longer justify their wasteful behavior or put off action to fix it. Many car companies already have patents (专利) for very efficient cars. 【4】 A conversion to clean cars means that petrol can be saved for the future. In addition, the environmental sectors of many governments are setting strict rules for industries that pollute too much. If companies do not keep these standards, they are penalized with higher taxes.
Food is also an issue that is being tackled. Many countries are now approving of the point of view that immediate action is needed. They are determining ways to export goods to people in need, so that no one goes hungry. 【5】 And these ideas will help to support the growing population.
A.Another issue is the lack of useful land for cultivating crops.
B.In some cases, their operations might be suspended altogether.
C.Such cars waste no resources and produce no pollution.
D.Experts will continue to come up with ideas for the future.
E.Too many people are packed into cities and towns around the globe.
F.Also, cars and machines waste important natural resources like oil and water.
G.So, what is being done to prepare for the future?
22、 About 2,400 years ago in Athens a man was put to death for asking too many questions. If philosophy has a patron saint (领航者),it is Socrates.
Shabby and a bit strange, Socrates did not fit in. Although physically ugly and often unwashed, he had great charm and a brilliant mind. Everyone in Athens agreed that there had never been anyone quite like him and probably wouldn't be again. He was unique.
As a young man, he had been a brave soldier fighting in the Peloponnesian War against the Spartans and their allies. In middle age, he wandered around the marketplace, stopping people from time to time and asking them awkward questions. That was more or less all he did. But the questions he asked were razor-sharp.
Over and over again Socrates demonstrated that the people he met in the marketplace didn't really know what they thought they knew. A military commander would begin a conversation totally confident that he knew what "courage" meant, but after 20 minutes in Socrates' company, he would leave completely confused. The experience must have been disconcerting. Socrates loved to reveal the limits of what people genuinely understood, and to question the assumptions on which they built their lives.
The word "philosopher" comes from the Greek words meaning "love of wisdom”. The kind of wisdom that it values is based on argument, reasoning and asking questions, not on believing things simply because someone important has told you they are true. Wisdom for Socrates was not knowing lots of facts, but knowing how to do something. It meant understanding the true nature of our existence, including the limits of what we can know. Philosophers today are doing more or less what Socrates was doing: asking tough questions, looking at reasons and evidence, struggling to answer some of the most important questions we can ask ourselves about the nature of reality and how we should live.
【1】What can we learn about Socrates?
A.He always dressed himself properly and neatly.
B.He used to be an anti-war activist when young.
C.He had a sharp mind and the spirit of insistence.
D.He was enthusiastic about bargaining in the supermarket.
【2】What does the underlined word “ disconcerting " in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Awesome.
B.Enjoyable.

D.Risky.
【3】What is the wisdom from philosophy?
A.Learning to argue, reason and ask.
B.Having faith in what experts told you.
C.Figuring out how to solve the question.
D.Managing to have access to lots of facts.
【4】Which column is the passage taken from?
A.Politics.
B.Economy.
C.Society.
D.Culture.
23、 The great outdoors: it’s the place to head for when you' re in need of peace and quiet, open spaces, beautiful scenery and exercise. Whether a huge mountain range or a local country park, these natural areas are perfect for us to refresh from our stressed-out lives, and their therapeutic effect is being used more and more to treat mental health.
As an example, in the foothills of the Snowdonia National Park in the UK, specialist therapy sessions are held to help people who suffer from depression, anxiety and stress. Outdoor art-related activities are held for patients, but the setting alone has been credited with improving the mood of patients. Art psychotherapist Pamela Stanley told the BBC that there was a “growing body of evidence” to support eco-therapy.
It' s true that for most of us connecting with the natural world definitely lifts our spirits. But the mental health charity Mind says eco-therapy has been recognized as a formal type of treatment that can sometimes be prescribed to someone by a doctor. It doesn’t involve taking medication, hut instead it just develops a person' s relationship with nature. This natural remedy can take on many forms, including doing yoga in a forest, gardening or even hugging a tree.
Evidence has shown there are many benefits of this “green” therapy, including improving social contact, social and work skills and coping abilities. It's what Dr. Rachel Bragg from the University of Essex calls “psychological restoration”. She told the BBC’s All in the Mind programme that nature-based therapies should be part of a “toolkit” of care for patients.
Of course, eco-therapy won't cure everything, but it is an option for therapists to use. And as we become more aware of the causes and effects of mental health, it' s good to know that help might lie outside our towns and cities, and that nature can give us a helping hand.
【1】In what way does nature work in the therapeutic effect?
A.It helps people get much relieved.
B.It helps people do bodybuilding.
C.It is doctor1 s preference for treatments.
D.It can help us fully recover from the illness.
【2】What does the underlined word “remedy” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.option
B.contact
C.treatment
D.effect
【3】What might be the best way of receiving eco-therapy?
A.Tending a garden.
B.Taking medicine.
C.Meditating at home.
D.Gathering with friends.
【4】What is Dr. Rachel Bragg's attitude towards the eco-therapy?
A.Unwilling.
B.Negative.
C.Neutral.
D.Positive.
24、 You can't see your sleeping pet's brain waves, but its behavior can tell you when Fido or Fluffy might be dreaming. If you watch closely, you'll see that as your cat falls asleep, her breathing becomes slow and regular and her body still. She has entered the first stage of sleep, called slow-wave sleep. After about 15 minutes you'll notice a change in her breathing. Her paws and whiskers twitch(抽动) and she flicks an ear. Fluffy has entered REM(Rapid Eye Movement), or dreaming stage of sleep. Although she twitches and makes little grunting noises, messages from her brain to the large muscles in her legs are blocked, so she can’t run about. She is in a state of “sleep paralysis”.
Back in 1963, Michel Jouvet, a French scientist who was studying sleep in cats, interrupted their sleep paralysis. Even though they were completely asleep, the dreaming cats began to chase balls that Jouvet couldn't see and arched their backs at invisible enemies. He figured he was watching them act out their dreams!
What were they dreaming about? Mostly, the dreaming cats seemed to be practising important cat skills: stalking, pouncing and fighting.
In another study, neuroscientist Matt Wilson recorded rats' brain waves while they learned mazes(迷宫). One day, he left the brain-wave-recording machine on while the rats fell asleep. The pattern of brain waves in the sleeping rats matched the pattern from the maze so closely that Wilson could figure out exactly which part of the maze each rat was dreaming about!
Many researchers now think that in both people and animals, one purpose of dreams is to practise important skills and figure out recent learning. This may explain why so many people dream about fighting and escaping, skills that were probably important to our ancestors, and why dreaming affects our ability to learn.
Do all animals dream? From looking at the brain waves of sleeping animals, scientists think that all mammals dream, but reptiles, fish, and invertebrates(无脊椎动物) don't.(They're not sure about birds.)
【1】What can we know about "sleep paralysis"?
A.It's the initial step of sleep.
B.I features slow-wave sleep.
C.It is in a motionless state.
D.It refers to the dreaming stage.
【2】In Michel Jouvet's study, when cats were dreaming, they were____________.
