21、 Five years ago, Yellow-Purple tore a flexor tendon(屈肌腱), making it difficult to use her left leg. The little penguin was having a hard time walking and swimming.
Yellow-Purple lives with a large group of African penguins at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. African penguins are an endangered species. They are beautiful, black and white birds that are about two feet tall when fully grown, and they are very popular with the Aquarium’s visitors.
The staff at the Aquarium made a little support boot for Yellow-Purple from plastic. This supported her left ankle and made it much easier for her to do all the things that penguins like to do. Yellow-Purple was getting along fine with her boot, but then Dr. Jen Flower, Chief Clinical Veterinarian at Mystic Aquarium, heard about 3 D printing technology. She decided to use it to help better the boot.
Luckily, Mystic Aquarium’s Vice President of Education &Conservation, Kelly Marls, knew that Mystic Middle School had recently acquired a 3D Systems printer. Kelly reached out to the school and arranged a meeting. Sue Prince, Library Media Specialist at Mystic Middle School, and seven middle school students visited Yellow-Purple to learn what was needed, and then contacted the supplier of their 3 D printer, ACT Group.
With ACT Group’s help, the students learned how to scan Yellow-Purple’s existing foot cast, then use that data to create a more efficient boot with sculpting software. The final boot design was printed on a 3D printer using multiple materials, allowing the boot to be flexible enough for comfortable movement, yet hard enough to support the injured tendon.
The students were thrilled when they saw Yellow-Purple walking almost back to normal. It was a great way to put science into practice. Celebrities like Ashton Kutcher shared Yellow-Purple’s story on Facebook, inspiring more than 1.5 million combined views.

22、In the United States alone, over 100 million cell-phones are thrown away each year.Cell-phones are part of a growing mountain of electronic waste like computers and personal digital assistants. The electronic waste stream is increasing three times taster than traditional garbage as a whole.
Electronic devices contain valuable metals such as gold and silver.A Swiss study reported that while the weight of electronic goods represented by precious metals was relatively small in comparison to total waste, the concentration(含量)of gold and other precious metals was higher in So-called e-waste than in naturally occurring minerals.
Electronic wastes also contain many poisonous metals.Even when the machines are recycled and the harmful metals removed, the recycling process often is carried out in poor countries,in practically uncontrolled ways which allow many poisonous substances to escape into the environment.
Creating products out of raw materials creates much more waste material,up to 100 times more, than the material contained in the finished products.Consider again the cell-phone,and imagine the mines that produced those metals, the factories needed to make the box and packaging(包装)it came in.Many wastes produced in the producing process are harmful as well.
The U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes that most waste is dangerous in that"the production, distribution, and use of products-as well as management of the resulting waste-all result in greenhouse gas release." Individuals can reduce their contribution by creating less waste at the start-for instance, buying reusable products and recycling.
In many countries the concept of extended producer responsibility is being considered or has been put in place as an incentive(动机)for reducing waste. If producers are required to take back packaging they use to sell their products, would they reduce the packaging in the first place?
Governments' incentive to require producers to take responsibility for the packaging they produce is usually based on money. Why,they ask, should cities or towns be responsible for paying to deal with the bubble wrap(气泡垫)that encased your television?
From the governments' point of view,a primary goal of laws requiring extended producer responsibility is to transfer both the costs and the physical responsibility of waste management from the government and tax-payers back to the producers.
【1】By mentioning the Swiss study, the author intends to tell us that .
A. the weight of e-goods is rather small B. natural minerals contain more precious metals
C. E-waste deserves to be made good use of D. the percentage of precious metals is heavy in e-waste
【2】The responsibility of c-waste treatment should be extended .
A. from producers to governments B. from governments to producers
C. from individuals to distributors D from distributors to governments
【3】What docs the passage mainly talk about?
A. The increase in e-waste. B. The creation of e-waste.
C. The seriousness of e-waste. D. The management of e-waste.
23、You’re faced with a lot of decisions in everyday work. There are multiple tasks calling for your focus, and you are burning daylight or even burn out trying to decide what comes first. 【1】
If you’re going to think smarter about how you prioritize (排序) tasks, you have to invest a little time away from your to-do list. Here’s the thing: what you work on confirms your values. You may think it’s no big thing to work overtime for a little while, but something will be sacrificed with this decision. If you’re a parent, you might spend less time with your kids. Similarly, if you choose not to work much or effectively, you’re deciding that your values lie outside your career. 【2】
Write all the tasks down and create four boxes containing all of things you care about. This could be: helps the community, helps one-to-one relationships, makes money, and things you find personally fulfilling. Then place them in the boxes and see how many of the boxes each one takes up. Anything that fills just one box has to be reconsidered. Anything that fills nothing should not be considered at all. 【3】From here, the rest of the prioritization gets a little easier. You now have a better idea where the efforts are really paying off. You also know when you are wasting your own time.
In order to figure out a plan for yourself, the first thing you should be doing is gathering all of your tasks, large and small. 【4】 Other people are counting on you or your future self will depend on them somehow. These are actually easier to prioritize. Then break down large tasks into smaller pieces. That helps put things in order. Part of the reason we do the small things first is that being productive feels good. Acknowledging accomplishments makes you more likely to keep going and pushes you through the more complicated tasks.
【5】 Notice when your energy levels are high and when they are weak. Be aware when you’re more productive for social activities and when you’re better off. The more you study yourself, the easier planning becomes.
Now that you have your priorities in order, go ahead and you will boost your productivity.
A.You can also prioritize based on energy levels.
B.The good news is that some tasks can keep you motivated.
C.So how can you figure out what’s most important to work on first?
D.This activity allows you to see where you really want to invest your energy.
E.If you want to make a new list, you need to turn to your colleagues for help.
F.There are some tasks that are pretty straightforward and you need to do the thing.
G.Where you invest your time is not just about what you value but also what you don’t value.
24、In this day and age, digital devices (数码产品) have become a significant part of our daily lives. 【1】
But while these devices do make people’s lives easier, there are things to look out for in using these technologies. One is how digital devices seem to be taking over people’s social relationships.
You might have noticed how everyone is engaged in their devices during family gatherings or get-togethers with friends. While they were constantly clicking on their portable devices, real conversations are becoming rare. 【2】
So if you want to spend quality time with each other, you and your friends and family need to sacrifice screen time.
【3】 When you’re hanging out with your friends, make it a policy that all devices should be turned off. Of course, everyone should agree on this ahead of time to avoid any misunderstanding. 【4】 This could also be a house rule when you have dinner with your family or during any other event with relatives.
Another option could be to turn devices on silent mode (模式), just in case someone is expecting an urgent call or important text. It sounds simple, but turning our eyes away from the screen may be more difficult than you think. 【5】 And while we may be able to carry on a conversation while playing a game, this is definitely going to cause a loss to the quality of the time we spend with others.
By removing digital devices in the background, you and your friends can concentrate on what’s really important—spending time with each other.
A.Turning off your digital devices is a good first step.
B.They’re also driving us away from people around us.
C.People can therefore concentrate on what they are doing.
D.Thus, the opportunity to strengthen connections might be disappearing.
E.It seems so natural to reach for your phone or device before doing anything.
F.They are used for a variety of tasks, whether it’s ordering food or booking a flight.
G.And everyone must be willing to obey the rule or else the purpose would be defeated.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两端,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In my early forties, I was diagnosed with late stage breast cancer. As a non-smoker who ate the right foods and exercised daily, all I could think was, "Why me?" My great fear and anxiety of the long term treatment ahead restricted me from seeing a bright side.
A few months later, my neighbor Greg fell off a roof and was paralyzed(瘫痪)from the waist down. Only thirty at the time, he was an enthusiastic outdoors man, besides he had a six-week-old baby. I could only imagine his despair. In a matter of seconds, he went from being an active young man to being helpless. I thought about visiting him, but didn't know if he felt like seeing anybody. Worse, I didn't know what to say.
Later that fall, hoping to take advantage of the sunny and pleasant day, I decided to go for a short walk. But now the treatment had run out of the last of my energy. Depressed, I had turned around to go back home when Greg drove by honking(按喇叭)and waving as if he hadn't a care in the world. To say the least, I was shocked to see the disabled man had driven his car successfully.
Feeling guilty for not visiting sooner, I visited Greg's house the following weekend. Before I could ring the doorbell, I heard wheels rolling on the hard wooden floor. In a cheerful voice, Greg yelled, "Come on in!"
We sat down, and I worked up the courage to ask him how he was doing. He answered, "I'm not going to lie. At first, all I did was be in low spirits, making not only myself but everyone around me miserable. As far as I was concerned, my life was over, and nothing anyone said or did could change my mood, " Excited and proud, Greg couldn't help keeping speaking and told me all his story at last.
