二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A British woman, Dr. Mantri, growing up in India started to notice his son, Dhruv, was struggling with simple arithmetic when he was in fifth-grade. After noticing this, she started employing an abacus (算盘) to help her son visually comprehend mathematics.

“I would ask him something like 35 minus 13 and he couldn’t do it.” said Dhruv’s mom Dr. Mantri. “I decided to change the way he looked at numbers,” she said. “An abacus is a tried and tested method, and the Egyptians used them for building the pyramid.” In just six days he started to show progress with the abacus and would go on to become a whizz kid with numbers, with even his classmates’ parents reaching out for help.

She never thought she would teach her son using an abacus, which she used as a child in India and it was always helpful. Within six days she started to notice a difference and see results. So dramatic was the turnaround, that school staff asked him to perform with the abacus at an assembly, where some parents even came to ask for advice on using it for their kids.

IT specialist Dr. Mantri said the humble abacus can be used for calculations into the trillions and kids enjoy learning on it because it’s like a game. “It becomes a playing tool for younger children, for it feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and visualize them.” She added.

By the age of 12, Dhruv was giving online cyber security seminars and is now pursuing a career in data science and analytics. Dhruv has now landed an apprenticeship (实习) at an international firm. During the four-year apprenticeship, he will spend one day a week studying Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Glasgow Caledonian University. “He is so confident now and I am so proud,” she said, with Dhruv adding “I don’t think my teachers would have guessed that I would be following a career in data science at that time.”

【1】Why did Dhruv have difficulty in learning mathematics?

A.He was faced with language barrier.

    B.He didn’t find a proper way.

    C.He suffered from eyesight problems.

    A.Careful.

    A.They find it appealing.

    B.They can calculate faster.

    C.They enjoy playing games.

    D.They are eager for success.

【4】What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Dhruv was addicted to the internet at 12.

B.Dhruv is teaching data science and analytics now.

C.Dhruv is a full-time student at Glasgow Caledonian University.

D.Dhruv’s career choice was beyond his teachers’ expectation.

  • 23、   On July 24, 2020, Mike Stout launched his kayak(皮筏艇)just before 8:30 a.m. About 56 miles and 16.5 hours later, he landed on the sandy Michigan shore. It was his second time crossing Lake Michigan.

By chance, Stout said, he gave kayaking a try in 2016. Already in good physical condition, he considered kayaking a weekend escape. Then he was challenged by a client of his firm to think bigger. He did go big quickly. Weekend kayak trips were 40, 50 and 60 miles long over the next few months. Then his goal was to cross Lake Michigan that year. On August 3, Stout completed his first crossing of Lake Michigan in 15.5 hours. Since then, he’s finished countless long-distance trips on Minnesota rivers and lakes.

In heading back to Lake Michigan last summer, Stout thought he could become the first kayaker to make a round-trip crossing of the Great Lake. He felt capable. He’d put in 800 miles since March 1, 2020-when ice was still on the Minnesota River.

Stout wanted to do with manageable winds. Possibilities rose, only to become worse, the lake showing its mercurial nature. Stout realized a single crossing was his best hope. With local police informed of his plans and plenty of food aboard, Stout launched. His plan was to land on the Michigan shore 12.5 hours later. The lake thought otherwise. The winds and waves were working against him, too. Still, he was resolute. Finally he could hear waves crashing on shore.

“Never did I have a sense of doubt or fear or worry,” Stout said. Despite the constant, forceful wind, he said the crossing was easier than his others because of his experience. But no less meaningful. The stars, the chance to speak to the heavens, and the hope that his adventure would inspire others-all were fuel to finish.

【1】What can we infer about Stout from paragraph 2?

    A.He challenged his client.

B.He intended to escape real life.

    C.He was organized and determined.

D.He set a goal bigger than his capability.

【2】What forced Stout to change his journey into a single crossing in 2020?

    A.His physical state.

    B.The weather condition.

    C.The freezing water.

    D.Warning from local police.

【3】What does the underlined word “mercurial” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Changeable.

    B.Merciful.

    C.Perfect.

    D.Balanced.

【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Weather.

    B.Adventure.

    C.Geography.

    D.Entertainment.

  • 24、   In 1938, Soichiro Honda started a little workshop, developing the concept of the piston ring (活塞环).

His plan was to sell the idea to Toyota. He labored night and day. Finally, came the day he completed his piston ring and was able to take a working sample to Toyota, only to be told that the rings did not meet their standards!

Rather than focus on his failure, he continued working towards his goal. Then, after two more years of struggle and redesign, he won a contract with Toyota.

By now, the Japanese government was gearing up for war! With the contract in hand, Soichiro Honda needed to build a factory to supply Toyota, but building materials were in short supply. He invented a new concrete-making process that enabled him to build the factory.

With the factory now built, he was ready for production, but the factory was bombed twice and steel became unavailable, too. He started collecting gasoline cans discarded by US fighters—“Gifts from President Truman,” he called them, which became the new raw materials for his rebuilt manufacturing process.

After the war, an extreme gasoline shortage forced people to walk or use bicycles. Honda built a tiny engine and attached it to his bicycle. His neighbors wanted one, and although he tried, materials could not be found and he was unable to supply the demand.

Soichiro Honda wrote to 18, 000 bicycle shop owners and, in an inspiring letter, asked them to help him revitalize (复兴) Japan. 5,000 responded and advanced him what little money they could to build his tiny bicycle engines. The small engine “The Super Cub” became a reality and was a success. With success in Japan, Honda began exporting his bicycle engines to Europe and America.

In the 1970s there was another gas shortage, this time in America and automotive fashion turned to small cars. Honda was quick to pick up on the trend. Experts now in small engine design, the company started making tiny cars, and rode another wave of success.

Today, Honda Corporation employs over 100, 000 people in the USA and Japan, and is one of the world’s largest automobile companies. Honda succeeded because one man made a truly committed decision, acted upon it, and made adjustments on a continuous basis. Failure was simply not considered a possibility.

【1】Which is the major obstacle that Soichiro Honda often met with on his way to success?

    A.A lack of financial assistance.

    B.A shortage of raw materials.

    C.Toyota’s breaking contracts.

    D.High standards of customer care.

【2】What is the “Gifts from President Truman” according to Soichiro Honda?

    A.US fighters.

    B.Steel products.

    C.Gasoline cans.

    D.American companies.

【3】Which of the following words best describe Soichiro Honda?

    A.Stubborn and down-to-earth.

    B.Optimistic and organized.

    C.Ambitious and broad-minded.

    D.Determined and persistent.

【4】What can we learn from Soichiro Honda’s story?

    A.Success is 99% failure.

B.Every cloud has a silver lining.

C.Rome was not built in a day.

    D.Opportunity knocks only once.
