THE REMARKABLE ROCKS area must-see on Kangaroo Island

accessible by air and ferry from the Australian mainland

Hop on new Kangaroo Island trail

    for five-day adventure

It sounds like an amusement park.Or a portion of a zoo reserved for marsupials(有袋动物). But Kangaroo Island(KI), 30 minutes by air from Adelaide in South Australia, is just the opposite. Much of the island remained inaccessible to visitors until this year.Opened to the public in May, the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail, a nearly 38-mile, fie-day hike, ushers adventurous trekkers on a botanically distinctive immersion into the islands' south-west side.

Footers can expect to walk roughly four to seven hours a day, passing colorful flower, splendid sugar gum tees and massive native plant life. In this timeless setting, they'll likely sport kangaroos, goanna lizards and spiny echidna. From cliff rims, they'll overlook the Southern Ocean, where sharks lurk and schools of salmon cluster in flower like, protective formations.

The trial includes 4 camping areas, each outfitted with 24 tent platforms :12 for self-guided walkers and 12 for tour operators, who also can arrange options off the trail.

Independent trekkers pay about$124to do the walk; the cost includes the parking at the Flinders Chase visitor center ,and a trail guide and map.

KI is accessible both by air and by ferry ;www.tourkangarooisland. com.au

    --Chicago Tribune/TNS

1According to the passage, Kangaroo Island is special for .

  • 22、   Our brain doesn't know how to be happy, or even content. It simply lacks the genetic instructions to carry out that task. It knows how to do a million other less important things, from writing a letter to maintaining our balance; from appreciating the music of Bach to smelling a rose, but if you ask the brain to be happy, it simply doesn't know how to respond.

This is because the genetic code is only concerned with survival and reproduction, which happiness does not necessarily have anything to do with, and therefore belongs in a different realm. Nature doesn't want us to always feel content and satisfied, let alone happy, as this would lower our guard against possible threats to our survival.

Happiness, as the Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes put it, is "like a feather flying in the air. It flies light, but not for very long." It is so elusive that it has also been compared to a butterfly, which "when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you," according to 19th﹣century American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. In any case, what is clear is that happiness is, at best, fleeting (飞逝的) and inconstant.

In this blog, we will look at the myth of happiness from many perspectives and, in the process, we will touch on topics such as happy personalities, the unhappy workings of the brain, evolution, dreams, and even fairy tales. I explore all these issues in detail in my book, which shares its title with this blog. Happiness is a crucial concept. We spend all of our lives pursuing it, so it deserves a very careful analysis.

We are determined by our biological design to experience mixed and messy emotions. But the silver lining is the knowledge that having difficult emotions doesn't represent a personal failure. The inevitable unhappiness that we all suffer from time to time is not a shortcoming that demands urgent repair. Far from it. This unhappiness is, in fact, what makes us human.

【1】Why does our brain lack the genetic instructions to be happy?

A.Because being happy is less important than appreciating and creating art.

B.Because happiness has little to do with the continuation of a species.

C.Because we tend to be more aware of the threats when we are unhappy.

D.Because feeling good isn't one of our concerns in living a life.

【2】What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 most probably mean?

    A.Difficult to achieve.

    B.Easy to expose.

    C.Unable to explain.

    D.Likely to remain.

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.We should make happiness our top concern no matter what.

B.Negative emotions always require immediate attention.

C.Social failures are more likely to be troubled by negative feelings.

D.We should accept difficult emotions as a natural part of life.

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

I walked home with my little brother every day the same way, past an old factory. Mom always told us to walk together and never to talk to strange men. One day, that walk home changed forever. As my brother and I passed the factory, I heard an old man’s voice. “Hey there, children.” I turned and saw a very old man standing there with a sweet smile on his face.

I was already hot from walking and carrying my heavy backpack, but I told him we were not allowed to talk to strangers. “Oh, I understand. And your mom’s right. My name is Bobby. Now run along,” he said as he disappeared behind the gate of the factory.

I went home and reported to my mom what had happened. My mother told me that I was right not to talk to strangers, so I tried avoiding this stranger for the following few days, but it was impossible. Other streets were not as safe to walk on, and every time we passed the factory, a familiar voice would say, “Hello there, children.”

Then one day, my family was taking a walk around the neighborhood. We were just about to pass the factory when I noticed the gate was open. I silently prayed that Bobby would appear and prove once and for all that he was a “good” stranger. And there he was.

He smiled as he approached my parents, and greeted them warmly. The genuine smile and surprise on my parents’ faces were all I needed to see.

They spoke for a few minutes and then, walking home, they said Bobby was a veteran(退伍军人)without a family but loved kids and that it would be safe for us to visit Bobby after school.

My brother and I would stop to visit Bobby after school every day after that. He would invite us into his tiny office to talk about my schoolwork, my friends, and sports.

It wasn’t long before I started getting a few friends to walk home with me just to meet Bobby. Before long, a group of about fourteen kids went daily to visit Bobby and received our sodas and gum. Thinking back, I now realize that Bobby bought all those treats just for us… and there were a lot of us to treat!

We visited Bobby every day after school for about three years!
