  • 21、   The past week was by no means an ordinary week, 1.

This Monday, the topic was brought up again by my parents during dinner. 2. Seeing my hesitant look, Mom patted me on my shoulder and said that I still had enough time to think about it, her smile encouraging me to do more research.

Later that evening, I turned to the Internet for help. 3. As a science student, law could be a good choice. Business and computer science were also attracting me. No sooner had I noted down the majors one after another than I crossed them all off immediately, because what I wanted was a profession that could make a difference in people’s lives.

    4. The moment “Role Models of Our Time” appeared on the screen, it caught my eye. The news story focused on superheroes-police officers, healthcare workers, deliverymen street cleaners-who guarded us selflessly to ensure our life ran normally. Suddenly, I realized my life's purpose-relieving pain and saving lives. And to pursue this call, I decided to specialize in medical science, just like my role models fighting against Covid-19 in Wuhan.

I jumped excitedly with joy at this idea. 5, saying that they would be so proud to see me in white. Now, determined to become a healthcare worker, whenever I start my schoolwork, I know I am studying for a noble cause.

A.Faced with so many choices, I seemed to be lost

  • 22、   Turtles have an unfortunate habit of eating plastic objects floating in the sea. These cannot be digested and may ultimately kill them. It is widely assumed that this fondness for plastics is a matter of mistaken identity. Drifting plastic bags, for instance, look similar to jellyfish (水母), which many types of turtles love to eat. Yet lots of plastic objects that end up inside turtles have no similarity to jellyfish. Joseph Pfaller of the University of Florida therefore suspects that the smell of marine microorganisms (海洋微生物) which grow on floating plastic objects fools turtles into feeding.

The idea that the smell of floating plastic objects might lure animals to their death first emerged in 2016. Researchers at the University of California noticed that certain chemicals, notably dimethyl sulphide (二甲基硫), which are released into the air by floating plastics, are those which many seabirds sniff () to track down food. These chemicals mark good places to hunt because they indicate plenty of the algae (海藻) and bacteria (细菌). The researchers also found that birds which pursue their food in this way are five or six times more likely to eat plastic than those which do not.

Since turtles are known to break the surface periodically and sniff the air when finding the way to their feeding areas, Dr Pfaller theorised that they are following these same chemicals, and are likewise fooled into thinking that floating plastic objects are eatable.

To test that idea, he and his colleagues set up an experiment. They arranged for 15 turtles to be exposed to four smells: the vapour from deionised water; the smell of turtle-feeding balls made of shrimp and fish meal; the smell of a clean plastic bottle chopped up into ten pieces; and the smell of a similarly chopped bottle that had been kept in the ocean for five weeks to allow algae and bacteria to grow on it.

Two of the smells proved far more attractive to the animals than the others. When sniffing both the smell of food balls and that of five-week-old bottles, turtles kept their nostrils out of the water more than three times as long, and took twice as many breaths as they did when what was on offer was the smell of fresh bottle-plastic or deionised-water vapour.

Though they have not yet tested whether dimethyl sulphide is the culprit, Dr Pfaller and his colleagues think it is the most likely candidate. In an unpolluted ocean, pretty well anything which had this smell would be eatable— or, at least, harmless. Unfortunately, five-week-old plastic bottles and their like are not.

1Paragraph 1 mainly tells us that turtles ________.

    A.mistake plastic objects for jellyfish

B.are fooled into eating plastics by a smell

C.are dying out as a result of plastic pollution

D.break down plastics without much difficulty

2What can we infer from the research on seabirds?

A.Seabirds eat plastics for the taste.

B.The algae and bacteria grow well on plastics.

C.Researchers got the idea from the study of turtles.

D.Some seabirds pursue food in a similar way to turtles.

    3Dr Pfaller’s research shows_______.

A.turtles prefer the smell of plastics

    B.turtles live on marine microorganisms

C.dimethyl sulphide may be to blame for turtles’ death

D.plastics release the same chemicals as microorganisms

4What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To propose a new way to study turtles.

B.To stress the importance of improving ecosystem.

C.To introduce the findings on the cause of turtles’ death.

D.To explain the effects of plastic pollution on sea animals.

  • 23、Bread making is a survival skill. With very few simple things—such as flour, salt and yeast—you can bake a fresh loaf of bread for your family, neighbors or coworkers. Baking is not just a useful survival skill. 【1】 In fact, baking and cooking have been used to treat people with mental health issues.

Julie Ohana, a social worker, offers what she calls culinary therapy to her patients in New York City to help them overcome many kinds of issues. 【2】

    Baking requires mindfulness.

When you’re in the kitchen, it really requires a certain level of mindfulness, of being present in the moment. And baking really requires step-by-step, following a recipe, being more precise. Kneading the dough (揉面团) or rolling something out, you really get the full benefit of being present in the moment and being able to relax and put aside all the other thoughts and just focus on the here-and-now.

Baking is a labor of love.

Baking is a process filled with love. 【3】 When you bake, you go through this whole process and it really is a labor of love and you end up with this finished product that—not only is it tangible—but it’s edible and it’s delicious.

    【4】

Often our food experiences are tied to family memories and stories. We remember meals our grandmothers made. We teach our children important recipes for family favorites.

    Baking is a win-win.

Giving delicious, baked goods makes the giver feel as good as the receiver. To pass the baked goods on to someone else certainly can make the day for the person receiving it. 【5】

    A.Baking is rewarding.

    B.Baking is emotional.

C.It not only makes you feel good, it produces something you can touch and eat!

D.But it’s also just as powerful for the person who’s giving them.

E.It can make you feel better at stressful times.

F.She explains that culinary therapy works on many levels.

G.And the receiver can benefit a lot from baking.

  • 24、In 1910, the Los Angeles Times ran a story about a boy who was charged with opening a valve (阀门) on a water pump powered by a steam engine to release the built-up pressure. His whole job consisted of staring at these machines all day, which was incredibly boring. The “ lazy ” boy then invented a release for the pump to run just as it should and won his freedom. The first automatic steam engine was born.

This story may be fictional, but the boy’s behavior reflects a deeper truth. When we are feeling lazy, we often search for an easier way, trying to update the process and save time and effort. In other words, laziness can drive innovation.

In recent years, some psychologists and business leaders have wised up to this insight, changing our perspective of what laziness really means. Both Bill Gates and Walter Chrysler have been credited with a quote: “ I always choose a lazy person to do a hard job because a lazy person will find an easy way to do it. ”

Our brains are born for laziness. Compared with our ancestors who had to conserve energy to compete for food, flee from predators, and fight, we now don’t take survival as a daily issue. It seems natural that we would choose to be “lazier” , but the opposite has occurred. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Americans sleep less and work more than we used to; productivity per worker has gone up 400 percent since 1950. Our culture teaches us that our worth depends on how industrious we are, so we work even harder to produce even more.

But there’s one big paradox (悖论), sad but true: The harder we work, the less productive we are. When demand increases, we tend to push harder. Yet the trouble is that, without any refresh and recharge, we are less efficient, make more mistakes, and get less engaged with what we’re doing.

Therefore, how can we make our labor more meaningful and our lives more fulfilling? Current research in psychology and neuroscience points to a new understanding of the value of the wandering mind. Taking breaks and allowing your thoughts to drift can help your brain retain information, refocus, and gain fresh perspective.

Here’s the core problem: When the time finally comes to put our feet up, we often don’t know how. We have little training in how to be idle. But at least give it a shot. Maybe this week, notice some downtime in your day, some white space in your calendar. Instead of filling the space with more work, just sit in the sofa, and be, in the words of poet Mary Oliver, “ idle and blessed. ”

【1】The author tells the story in paragraph 1 to prove ______.

    A.the kid needs punishing

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was our tun to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was already covered with tom wrapping paper. Obviously, the children could hardly wait to discover the hidden treasures, which they had expected for nearly a month. Now we adults sat around the room with our presents at our feet, slowly removing the paper, tying o maintain our dignity in front of the children.

My wife Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag(恶作剧) gifts. This day makes me a bit uneasy at Christmas or my birthday, never knowing what form of embarrassment lies waiting for me under the thin borders of the wrapping paper.

Recently, my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I was playing computer video flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me. The excitement of the moment just beamed across her face. It was everything she could do to keep herself from helping me rip the paper from each present. Finally, I came to the last gift and with my natural Sherlock Holmes ability, I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With everyone looking on, I decided to go ahead and got it over with—just let them have their laugh—and I tore the paper and there it was…a toy airplane about two inches long. Our holiday guests started giggling to themselves as I looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile on my face and blurted out, “A toy airplane? Are you kidding me?”

Brenda gave me the look—that look that always tells me I have just said something wrong and should have given it a second thought. I had failed to look at the name tag(标签) before I opened the present to see who it was from. As I picked up the paper from the floor and read the name tag, my heart sank.
