21、 A Japanese company has created a “smart” mask that aims to improve communication for people wearing face coverings to prevent the spread of COVTD-19.
The use of face masks has become normal in parts of the world still struggling to reduce the spread of the coronavirus. However, it can affect the quality of communication between wearers.
The wearable electronic device is designed to help improve speech communication in such conditions. The Japanese company Donut Robotics calls its invention the “e-mask”. The device is meant to fit over other kinds of face masks commonly worn by the public.
Made of soft plastic material, it contains a built-in microphone and has holes in the front to let air in. When turned on, the mask uses Bluetooth technology to connect to a mobile device. An app then helps users perform several actions, including turning speech into text, completing telephone calls and making the user's voice louder. The device can also translate a person's voice from Japanese into eight other languages.
Taisuke, the head of Donut Robotics, told the Reuters, “We worked hard for years to develop a robot and we have used that technology to create a product that responds to how the coronavirus has reshaped society.” He noted that the company raised $265,000 in just the first 37 minutes to develop the smart mask through a campaign on the Japanese crowdfunding service Fundinno. “It would usually take three or four months to get that kind of money,” Taisuke said.
The company produced a working model of the mask within a month by using software developed for its other robot products. The mask design was similar to one created years ago by one of the company's engineers that mapped facial muscles to interpret speech
Taisuke said the company plans to sell its first 5,000 e-masks starting in September, at about $40 per mask, in an effort to enter a global market that newly appeared.
【1】What's the purpose of the new “smart” mask?
A.To help protect people from being struck by COVID-19.
B.To help COVID-19 patients communicate with the doctors.
C.To make it convenient to communicate with face masks on.
D.To translate human thoughts or facial expressions into words.
【2】How does the e-mask perform its function?
A.By connecting to an app on a mobile device.
B.By using Bluetooth to make the user's voice clear.
C.By turning the wearer's dialect into standard language.
D.By being fitted into plastic face masks that people wear.
【3】How did Taisuke probably feel about the company's fundraising result?
A.Somewhat relieved.
B.Greatly encouraged.
C.Slightly confused.
D.Terribly disappointed.
22、 About 10 years ago,I sat in my office, struggling to write an annual progress report for my leader. I enjoy writing scientific papers that engage my creativity and further my research. But report writing doesn’t come with any reward apart from the momentary satisfaction of finishing something. Like other routine paperwork,I find it hard to get through. So that day,I offered myself a reward : When I finished the report,I'd give myself 2 hours to examine slides (载玻片)under the microscope — a task I've always loved but never had much time for as a staff member. It ’ s a strategy I call " just for fun",.
The strategy was born out of challenges I experienced in graduate school. I usually delayed putting together reports for university administrators until threatening letters arrived. I never felt that paperwork was advancing my science, but rather sapping my energy and time for research. One of my committee members recognized and understood my difficulties. Then he told me about his strategy of rewarding himself with a fun project when he completed a task that he didn’t particularly enjoy. He advised me to think about doing something similar. I immediately liked the idea.
Over the course of my career, this strategy helped me complete and move past the parts of my job that I didn’t particularly enjoy. The rewards I gave myself provided a way to relax and reminded me why I love being a scientist.
As for that annual report,I spent an ordinary morning on it but got it done. Then I hurried over to the microscope , eager to inspect a series of slides that my collaborators (合作者) had sent a couple of weeks earlier. To others, it may have looked like work. But to me,it was just for fun.

B.Through the reward of his collaborators.
C.Through the instructions of university administrators.
D.Through a committee member’s suggestion.

A.Choose a career you really like.
B.Seek fun when doing science research.
C.Motivate yourself to finish boring tasks.
D.Reward yourself with a new strategy.
23、One freezing morning last February, I walked through Ontario Place. Trees were frosted sculptures. Large chunks of ice floated in the lake. Then I saw a group of people in bathing suits bouncing up and down in the water. They held hands, shouting and yelling into the sky. They looked and sounded so free.
I’ve always found cold water thrilling. The shock of it is like pressing a switch. It seems to reset my body and soul.
And last winter, I definitely needed a reset. I woke up most mornings with a dull, grey feeling as I forced myself out of bed to start the day. I needed something to cheer myself up, but I didn’t know what, until that day.
The ice warriors (勇士) emerged from the lake, their skin steaming. Trembling, they were yet laughing and hugging each other. I called out: “You guys are awesome!” One woman waved back, “Come and join us! We’ re here every Monday morning.”
The night before my first dip (游泳), I was excited and nervous. Cold water was one thing, but this icy lake was a whole other level. Should I back out? Eventually, I got up in the dark and drove to the meeting spot.
After some wild warm up, I charged into the lake along with others. We yelled into the sky. Teeth chattering heart rates slowing, fingers and toes going numb (麻木), we stayed there for somewhere between two and five minutes. Knowing it was my first time, people cheered me on. It felt amazing. I was stupid with cold, but I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so happy.
Now I go dipping almost every day, and I’ve come to long for that moment when the cold becomes a second skin and my internal voice goes silent. Apart from the thrill of those first heart-stopping dives, which, ironically, saved me from going under, what has drawn me is this community of generous, open-hearted souls.
We laughed together, often, but from the stories we’ve shared about ourselves, I know I’m not the only one who faces life’s challenges. Holding hands in the freezing lake, we looked out for each other last winter and will do so through this one.
It won’t fix everything in our lives—but for some reason, it helps. At the end of each session I return home feeling stronger, lighter, more able to carry on. As another winter sets in, I’m more than ready to embrace the cold again.

24、As the world approaches the second anniversary of the declaration of the Covid-19 pandemic by the World Health Organization(WHO), on March 11, more nations are rolling out, or are discussing the possibility of, fourth doses of coronavirus vaccine for their most vulnerable. In the United States, leading public health officials say they are “very carefully” monitoring if or when fourth doses might be needed.
Israel was the first nation to roll out fourth doses, announcing in December that adults 60 and older, medical workers and people with suppressed(抑制的) immune systems were qualified to receive the extra shot if at least four months have passed since their third dose. More recently, the Public Health Agency of Sweden announced last week that second booster doses are recommended for everyone 80 and older in the country. The United Kingdom’s Department of Health and Social Care announced Monday that an extra booster dose(加强剂量) of coronavirus vaccine will be offered in the spring to adults 75 and older, residents in care homes for older adults and immunosuppressed(免疫功能不全) people 12 and older.
In the US, health officials emphasized late last year that fourth doses were not yet needed and said it was too early to be discussing a potential fourth dose of coronavirus vaccine for most people. Now, the US Food and Drug Administration “is indeed continually looking at the emerging data on the pandemic and variants(变种) in the United States and overseas in order to evaluate the potential utility and composition of booster doses,” FDA spokesperson Alison Hunt wrote in an email to CNN on Friday.
She confirmed that although Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation, has noted that there is still much uncertainty as to how the pandemic may further evolve, he also has said it is possible that a fourth dose might be recommended as we move into fall. A fall timeline exist at the same time of the administration of flu shots, which could be convenient for people and makes sense scientifically because respiratory(呼吸的) viruses – like the coronavirus – tend to peak in the winter months that follow.
【1】What can we know from the first paragraph?

C.People aged 12 and over in the UK with immunosuppressed will be given a booster dose.
D.Sweden recommended a second dose for every Swiss aged 80 and over.
【3】What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.Health officials in the United States do not believe a fourth dose is needed currently.
B.FDA is assessing possible effects of booster doses through analyzing related data.
C.Alison believed it impossible that a fourth dose might be suggested in autumn.
D.People are most likely to contract respiratory diseases before winter.
