二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   “Could you see the whites of their eyes?" said the man, who was seated on a soap box.

“Nothing of the kind.," replied old Henry warmly.“Just a lot of figures running towards us, and I let go at where there appeared to be most. Bang!"

“Mr. Fleming:”said the grocerhis respectful voice expressed somehow the old man's exact social weight-' "Mr. Fleming. you never were frightened much in those battles, were you?"

The veteran (老兵) looked down and smiled. Observing his manner, the entire group laughed a little.“Well, I guess I was." he answered finally.“Pretty well scared. sometimes. Why. in my first battle, I thought the sky was falling down. I thought the world was coming to an end. You bet I was scared."

Everyone laughed. Perhaps it seemed strange and rather wonderful to them that a man should admit the thing. and in the tone of their laughter there was probably more admiration than if old Fleming had declared that he had always been a lion Moreover, they knew that he had ranked as an orderly sergeant (中士). and so their opinion of heroism was fixed. None, to be sure, knew how an orderly sergeant ranked. but then it was understood to be somewhere just shy of a major-general's stars. So, when old Henry admitted that he had been frightened, there was a laugh.

“The trouble was," said the old man,“I thought they were all shooting at me. Yes, sir, I thought every man in the other army was aiming at me in particular. and only me. And it seemed so unreasonable. you know. I wanted to explain to them what an almighty good fellow I was. because I thought then they might quit all trying to hit me. But I couldn't explain, and they kept on being unreasonable. Blimp! Blam! Bang! So. I ran!"

Two little triangles of wrinkles appeared at the corners of his eyes. Evidently he appreciated some comedy in this storytelling. Down near his feet, however, little Jim, his grandson, was obviously horror-stricken. His hands were clasped nervously. and his eyes were wide with astonishment at this terrible scandal (丑闻), his most magnificent grandfather telling such a thing.

“That was at Chancellorsville. Of course, afterwards I got kind of used to it A man does. Lots of men, though, seem to feel all right from the start. I did. as soon as  I got on to it" as they say now, but at first I was pretty well scared. Now, there was young Jim Conklin, old Si Conklin's son- that used to keep the leather factory- you none of you recall him- -well, he went into it from the start just as if he was born to it. But with me it was different. I had to get used to it."

When little Jim walked with his grandfather. he was in the habit of skipping along on the stone pavement, in front of the three stores and the hotel of the town, and betting that he could avoid the cracks. But upon this day he walked calmly. with his hand gripping two of his grandfather's fingers. Sometimes he kicked abstractedly at dandelions that curved over the walk. Anyone could see that he was much troubled.

“Um," said the boy. with a strange lack of interest. He continued his reflections. Then finally he asked:“Grandpa- now- -was that true what you were telling those men?"

“What?" asked the grandfather. “What was I telling them?"

    “Oh, about your running.

“Why. yes, that was true enough, Jimmie. It was my first fight, and there was an awful lot of noise, you know.'

Jimmie seemed a bit confused that this idol (偶像). of its own will, should be so weak. His stout boyish idealism was injured and then lapsed into a moody silence.

1What can be inferred from everyone's laugh when Fleming admitted he was scared sometimes?

A.They didn't expect a man like Fleming should admit his fright.

B.They thought that he was just making some kind of joke.

C.They were scared of his social weight and could do nothing else.

D.They teased him for his not being ashamed of his escape from the battlefield.

2Why was little Jim astonished when Fleming told his story?

A.Because people laughed at his grandfather.

B.Because his grandfather failed to keep the secret.

    C.Because his grandfather disappointed him.

D.Because people knew how an orderly sergeant ranked.

3Which of the following can best describe Henry Fleming?

A.Shy but brave. B.Smart and admirable.

C.Honest and courageous. D.Frightened but heroic.

4How does the author expose the character of Henry Fleming?

A.In a way of Romanticism. B.By a means of Impressionism.

C.With a method of Symbolism. D.In a style of Naturalism.

5Which of the following can be served as the best title for the story?

    A.The scandal B.The veteran

    C.The war D.The lion

  • 22、   What will you get if you ask middle schoolers to show you their city through a camera? There may be images of flowers and friends, street scenes and sneakers, and trees and trains. It can also include colorful images featuring their favorite people, places and things. Such photographs made up an exhibition that was the end result of a special citywide photography lesson called “Everyday DC”.

“DC is a place where people can all come together and be free and be with everyone that they love,” said Lauryn Tharpe, one of the four student curators (馆长) who worked with their art teacher at Brookland Middle School to put the exhibition together. “There’s more to DC than big buildings and important people.”

“Everyday DC” was inspired by a popular Instagram feed called Everyday Africa, which was started by two professional photographers who noticed the personal photos of Africa, from their perspective (视角) showing a different story than their professional work. The goal of the online photo “exhibition” was to show viewers what it’s like to live in Africa, as opposed to what people outside of Africa see in the news.

In Washington DC, students took photos to reflect their lives there. Twelve middle schools each submitted about 10 student photographs, from beautiful portraits to action shots and images of the students’ favorite foods. Tharpe and another three students were selected to be curators by their art teacher, Maame Bawuah, who coordinated (协调) the project for DC Public Schools.

“I have a lot of amazing students, although the four of them are quite exceptional,” said Bawuah, who chose the students to be curators because of their interest in both photography and museum management.

A curator is someone who collects, organizes, cares for and displays anything in a collection. To get ready for the exhibition, the curators had to take care of many tasks, including taking their photos according to different themes.

1What do we know about the “Everyday DC” exhibition?

A.It promoted the students’ interest in museum management.

B.It reflected the diverse life from the students’ perspective.

C.It was established by Lauryn Tharpe and Maame Bawuah.

D.It exhibited photos featuring influential things and figure.

2Why does the author mention Everyday Africa?

A.To introduce how Everyday DC came about.

    B.To highlight Everyday Africa’s popularity.

C.To compare Everyday Africa with Everyday DC.

D.To show the widespread influence of Instagram.

3What are the four curators required to do for the project?

    A.Decorate the photographs on display.

    B.Study professional photography skills.

C.Find fault with the submitted photos.

    D.Group the photographs by theme.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.A lesson on running museums B.A citywide exhibition

C.Photograph your life D.Admire your city

  • 23、My dearest son and daughter,

The story of New Jersey high school student Rachel Canning suing (起诉) her parents for child support and high school education inspired me to write you a little letter. Let me just put this out there: the only way I expect to see you in a court is as a lawyer or a judge.

There are two things about this case that seem to be disaster.

First, it’s natural for parents and children to argue. I can guarantee that we will disagree. One or both of you will, at some point, scream at the top of your lungs the various ways you hate me. And I won’t always like you, either. But I will always love you and do everything I can to keep your best interests as my focus, even when I’m so angry. We are family. That means we are as much a part of one another as the flesh, blood and bones in our body. And we all should think about it very deeply instead of breaking that bond.

Second, I’ll be honest, no matter how far apart we are on your life choices, your father and I will most certainly pay everything we can for your higher education. But that doesn’t mean you deserve it. To be clear, that is a privilege we happily extend (给予) to younot a right you are born with. And you will have to work hard to earn that privilege. Growing up is hard work.

If I do my job properly as your mother—and you do yours as my children—you would sooner get a job or two, and find a way to make your dreams come true than go to trial over what you think you have the right to.

    Love always,

    Mom

【1】The mother writes this letter because she wants her children to ______.

    A. be prepared for education

    B. learn a lesson from the case

    C. take up the legal profession

    D. remember Rachel Canning

2When in disagreement, the mother expects her children not to ______.

    A. guarantee anything

    B. scream out their anger

    C. break the family bond

    D. forget their best interests

3The mother thinks of parents’ paying for their children’s higher education as ______.

    A. a way in which children realize their dreams

    B. a test of whether parents love their children

    C. a privilege that children should earn

    D. a right that parents are born with

  • 24、   When you take to the seas on a cruise(游船度假), you usually think you are leaving solid ground behind, but the Celebrity Solstice brings a whole new experience to its passengers. Aboard the 317m-long ship is a half-acre lawn(草坪). The Celebrity Solstice is the first cruise ship ever to house live grass.

Nikolas Asproudas, the ship's environmental officer told New Zealand Neus, It was a crazy idea to start with. For five years now, they have been saying that this lawn is the most walked lawn in the world. It's a symbol of honor, particularly because the lawn on the top deck of the ship has special challenges with growth at sea, including “burns” from the salt water, which must be washed off immediately and clearance checks before the ship can pull in to shore.

The lawn is grown in silica(二氧化硅)sand rather than soil, which not only reduces weight, helping the ship's stability, but also agrees with restrictions and helps control pests that may otherwise stay on the grass.

Asproudas sends the Captain of the ship a weekly report on the status of the lawn. “We know that the Australian and New Zealand, authorities are very strict with the grass, and of course, they have to check before we come if, everything's OK,” said the Captain.

The lawn is a source of pride for Asproudas, so. when there are problems with it, he says, “It brings me some sad feelings, but I need to be strong, because I know that it will recover within one week.” All of the crew’s hard work to maintain the “backyard” is appreciated by its many guests, including some that say the: Celebrity Solstice’s lawn is better than theirs at home. Two recent passengers aboard said, “We’re having a drought at home so…it was brilliant!”

Though the option of walking barefoot through a grassy field on a moving cruise ship seems terrific, there are many other ships that are trying to outdo one another with even more surprising guest options.

【1】What is a special challenge that the lawn faces?

    A.Bad weather.

    B.Salt water.

    C.Rare soil.

    D.Strict restrictions.

【2】What might be talked about if the passage is continued?

    A.Efforts to maintain the lawn.

    B.Other options on the cruise.

C.Guest choices on some other cruises.

D.The crew members of the cruise.

【3】What might be the best title for the passage?

A.The Advantages of a Cruise Ship

B.A Cruise Ship that Has a Backyard

C.The Building of a Special Cruise Ship

D.A Cruise Ship that Protects the Environment

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。

Lai Shixiong, 68, president of the Ivy League Analytical English magazine based in Taiwan, believes that constant practice and hard work are the keys to mastering English

Like many non-native speakers, Lai failed when he started learning English. When he was in high school, he once got the unbelievably low mark of seven out of 100 in an English test. He almost gave up on English, but then he graduated from high school and enrolled(入学 )in a military(军队的) school, where he met a classmate who was very good at English.

Amazed by his classmate’s American accent, Lai decided to start learning English from the very beginning. To correct his pronunciation, Lai practiced phonetic symbols(音标) hundreds of times everyday using vinyl records(黑胶唱片).

Now that he was able to pronounce words, he began to practice dialogues. “I just talked to myself as if I were in a dialogue," he said.“I was basically talking to the air.”

However, talking to himself also meant that Lai wouldn’t be able to hear English expressions from others. That was when dictionaries came to his rescue. Unlike many who just look up vocabulary and pronunciations, Lai looked at detailsdefinitions, usages and example sentences. “By checking every single part of the entry(词条), you learn not only the vocabulary itself, but plenty of useful small words,” Lai said.

Reading and listening to English news is another good way to keep abreast of(了解……的最新进展) new expressions. “The English news can teach us how to describe new things in our daily lives,” Lai said.

When he found it easy enough to speak English, Lai thought of two ways to improve his skills. He used English to describe everything he saw. He even translated speeches when he went to class meetings at the military school. “There is no shortcut to mastering a language. You have to practice,” Lai said. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.
