21、 Teaching children to empathize with others measurably improves their creativity, and could potentially lead to several other benefits, new research suggests.
The findings are from a year-long University of Cambridge study with Design and Technology (D&T) year 9 pupils at two London schools. Pupils at School A spent the year following the standard curriculum, while School B’s D&T lessons used a set of engineering design thinking tools to foster students’ creativity and empathy in solving real-world problems.
Both sets of pupils were assessed for creativity at the start and end of the school year using the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking: a well-established psychological test.
The results showed a significant increase in creativity among pupils at School B. At the start, the creativity scores of pupils in School A were 11% higher than those at School B. By the end, however, creativity scores from School B were 78% higher.
Pupils from School B again scored higher in categories such as “emotional expressiveness” and “open-mindedness”, indicating an improvement in empathy was driving the overall creativity scores.
Meanwhile, the study suggests encouraging empathy can deepen pupils’ general engagement with learning. They found that boys in School B showed an improvement in emotional expression, scoring 64% higher at the end of the year than at the start, while girls improved more regarding cognitive empathy, showing 62% more perspective-taking.
The research is part of a long-term cooperation between the Faculty of Education and the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, led by Bill Nicholl and Ian Hosking. “Teaching for empathy has been problematic despite being part of the National Curriculum for over two decades. It’s vital if we want education to encourage the designers and engineers of tomorrow.” said Nicholl.
【1】What was the purpose to introduce engineering design thinking tools in D&-T lessons?
A.To assess the pupils' creativity accurately.
B.To show the superiority of standard curriculum
C.To train pupils to empathize with others in reality.
D.To improve pupils' involvement with class activities.
【2】How did the researchers get the result?
A.By doing an experiment.
B.By conducting interviews.
C.By giving out questionnaires.
D.By referring to related literature.
【3】What can we infer from the study result?
A.The creativity of pupils in School B always took the lead.
B.The empathy of pupils in School A promotes their creativity.
C.Boys and girls differed in their change due to the D&T course.
D.Teaching for empathy has already achieved a lot due to education reform.
【4】Where is the text probably from?
A.A popular journal.

22、I got invited to go with some friends to a game at another school. A senior will be driving us, and I think she’s a good driver, but it’s someone my parents don’t know. I want to tell my parents where I’m going, but what if I ask and they say “no”? I’ll end up wishing I never mentioned it and just went ahead and did it anyway.
If you want more privileges, it’s best to build a track record of honesty and trust. Letting a parent know where you’re going is always a good idea.
You may worry that telling your parents puts you at risk of getting “no” for an answer. But there’s a good chance your parents might be OK with you going. If you go but don’t tell them, you risk losing something more important — your parents’ trust.
Parents who find out their kids did something behind their backs may be less likely to give permission to do things in the future. When trust is broken like this, parents wonder if teens are trying to hide something — and what they imagine can be far worse than the reality.
Before you talk to your parents about the game, think about which approach will help them feel most comfortable with giving you more freedom. Maybe they’d like to meet the person driving or talk to friends who have driven with her in the past. If your parents have questions or hesitate about letting you go, find out what their worries are and then do your best to answer them.

23、 Stanley Martin Lieber was born in Manhattan, NY on December 28, 1922.Upon graduating from De Witt Clinton High School, the 16-year-old boy was hired at what was then called Timely Comics. The company was best known for inexpensive fiction, or magazines. In 1941, when given his first chance to author a story—a short text for Captain America, he signed his name as “Stan Lee”. However, the pseudonym stuck, and soon after, became his legal name.
Promoted to the editor of the comic book division at the age of 19, Lee spent the next decade writing a variety of styles. In the late 1950s, knowing his common writing career, Lee was considering leaving when he was asked to create a superhero character to compete with DC Comics’ successful Justice League.
Lee partnered Jack Kirby to launch the Fantastic Four. The comic book was an instant hit, leading to the development of other superhero characters such as Iron Man, and Spider-man. Unlike previous superheroes who were described as perfect, Lee’s creations were provided with human faults, thus making them more related to fans.
In 1972, Lee, by then the publisher of marvel, gave up editorial control to spend time promoting the company. While television shows featuring Marvel characters like Spider-Man and the Hulk did well, achieving success on the big screen proved difficult. It was not until 2000 with the release of The X-man, starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, lan Mekellen, and Halle Berry, that Marvels superheroes became a hit on the big screen. This was also the first time Lee had began the much- -loved tradition of making cameo (客串演出) appearances in the movies. In 2009, the Walt Disney Company acquired Marvel and lifted up the superhero world further with summer blockbusters like The Avengers.
Though Lee is no longer with us, his larger-than-life personality, fun-loving wit, and charm will be remembered for generations to come.
