  • 21、   It often happens that problems blow into our lives. For some of us it may be a temporary period, but for others, it’s a lifetime change. Here are stories of ordinary people who had to face unpleasant events and managed to overcome them with dignity.

    Bill Porter

Even though Bill Porter had a damaged brain, he wanted to work in sales. He achieved his goal, and later he became one of the best salesmen in America. The movie Door to Door is about him, and it’s recommended to those who think something will hold them back from achieving a desired career.

    Evgeny Smirnov

There’s nothing worse for a dancer than losing the ability to dance. But Evgeny Smirnov, Russian break dance champion, went on dancing, despite the fact that he had to learn to dance again. His performance became a great example of the fact that someone can dance incredibly cool even without a leg.

    Olesya Vladykina

Even though she’s only 20, Olesya Vladykina has suffered a lot; an accident in Thailand took not only her left hand, but also her close friend. The moment changed the girl’s life, but she didn’t give up. After the accident, she took part in the Paralympic Games twice, having won first place and having set a world record.

    Andrea Bocelli

Blindness takes away the ability to see the world, but not to feel it. Perhaps this helps Italian Andrea Bocelli, a popular blind classical singer, to share fascinating and inspiring energy with the audience through his songs.

1Whose story is the movie Door to Door about

    A.A singer’s. B.A dancer’s.

    C.A sportsman’s. D.A salesman’s

2What disadvantage does Evgeny Smirnov have

A.He has one arm. B.He has only one leg.

C.He has no ability to see. D.He has a damaged brain.

3Whose performance will you enjoy if you like classical music

    A.Bill Porter’s. B.Andrea Bocelli’s

    C.Evgeny Smirnov’s. D.Olesya Vladykina’s

  • 22、   Solar cars aren't so familiar to us as solar water heaters on top of buildings. However, they're already in races. Solar-powered cars, to be exact, are powered by solar cells that convert (转换) solar energy into electricity. Every few years a collection of strange-looking low black vehicles gather in Australia for the World Solar Challenge, a solar-powered car race covering 3,020 kilometer from Darwin to Adelaide. Various teams from around the world will join in the race, most of which are sponsored (赞助) by universities and companies. The most successful team in the past decade has been a Dutch team from Delft University. Another team, consisting of Hawaiian high school students, was the subject of a famous film, Race the Sun.

The solar-powered cars are allowed to drive through the Outback, the remote and arid areas in the centre of the country in the World Solar Challenge. averaging over 90 km/hr. The purpose of the race is to promote the development of solar-powered cars. This aim has been more than realized, as solar technology has improved so much since the first race in 1987 that the cars can now go well over the legal speed limits. In fact, new rules have been introduced to reduce speeds.

The new aim for solar powered vehicles makers is to develop cars larger and more comfortable than the racing models. In December, Swiss teacher Louis Palmer completed a 17-month, 52,000 km trip around the world in a "solar taxi". His three-wheeled car pulled a trailer with solar cells and batteries. Palmer's solar car can travel 300 km on a single charge, and reach the speed of 90 km/hr. The prototype (原型) was expensive but he hopes that, if mass produced, it would sell for around 10,000 Euros.

    1According to Paragraph 1, solar-powered cars are .

A.invented in Australia B.used as taxis in daily life

C.powered by electricity D.produced in large numbers

2The passage shows the World Solar Challenge .

A.takes place every year B.is sponsored by universities

C.aims to develop solar cars D.features cheap and comfortable cars

3What do we know about Louis Palmer?

A.He's the winner of the race this year. B.He's travelled around the world by air.

C.His solar car can travel 300 km per hour. D.His solar car cost more than 10, 000 Euros.

4What is the best title for the passage?

    A.Solar-powered Cars B.Race the Sun

C.Car Race in Your Dream D.Future Transportation

  • 23、   The Maya city of Tikal is famous for its amazing palaces and temples. But something far more ordinary kept Tikal functioning: its water-purifying(净化) system, the earliest known of its kind.

Researchers recently discovered a volcanic mineral that traps microbes(微生物) and heavy metals in Tikal's largest reservoir(水库). Because the material is not found nearby, the finding suggests the presence of a man-made water-purifying device.

The finding denies the long-standing idea that the ancient worlds technological achievements belonged to the Eastern world, like Egypt, and China. The leading scientist of this research, Kenneth Tankersley says, “When talking about purifying water, the Maya were thousands of years ahead.”

Located in the forests of Central America, Tikal, is thought to have been home to more than 45,000 people. They had to struggle against a dry season lasting from November through April. Storing water in reservoirs was a solution, but that water had to be fit to drink, said Kenneth, “Keeping water clean was of great importance.”

A few years ago, the researchers were surprised to find that the largest reservoir, Corriental, had significantly fewer harmful chemicals than the others. “The water quality at Corriental was much higher.”

Somehow the Maya must have been purifying Corriental’s water, the team assumed. “The Maya used gardens as their bathrooms.” Kenneth said, “The water coming into the reservoir would not have been very clean.”

At the bottom of Corriental, scientists found four separate layers(), each a few centimeters thick, of millimeter-scale “zeolites(沸石)”. This type of volcanic mineral can purify water and is still in widespread use today, Kenneth says, “Just about everything we drink, from bottled water to wine, runs through a zeolite purifying device.”

The Maya wouldn’t have known about the zeolite in rock, but they would have recognized the purifying effects, the researchers suggest. A zeolite-rich rock formation about 30 kilometers northeast of Tikal is the likely source of the material in Corriental reservoir, the team said last month in Scientific Reports. Water at this site “was clear and tasted good.”

    1What did the researchers find?

A.A new material called zeolites. B.The purifying effects of zeolites.

C.An old water-purifying system. D.High-quality water in Corriental.

2How did the Maya purify water?

A.By building the largest reservoir. B.By using gardens as their bathrooms.

C.By getting rid of heavy metals. D.By spreading four layers of zeolites.

3What can we learn from the research?

A.The Maya drank bottled water. B.The ancient Maya were very bright.

C.The system was created by accident. D.The zeolites were found in Corriental.

    4According to Kenneth,________.

A.the original water in Corriental was not clean enough

B.water supply in Tikal lasted from November to April

C.all ancient technological achievements belonged to the East

D.the Maya had a good understanding of the zeolite in rocks

  • 24、Food made from atmospheric carbon could feed the world while helping to fight climate change, according to Solar Foods, a Finnish company founded in 2017.“We can collect CO2 anywhere,” said its CEO Pasi Vainika, whose company has developed a protein powder made using CO2. “That’s a strategic shift where raw materials are in the air. ” The protein powder, called Solein, can be turned into meat and dairy substitutes or added tofoods and shakes.

Solar Foods uses special units to pull CO2 from the atmosphere. To turn it into protein, microbes (微 物),similar to those in the production of wine and yogurt, will be fed on it to grow and reproduce. During the process, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. Along with a growth medium containing necessary minerals, the three gases are pumped in to feed the microbes. Harvested and dried, that remaining mixture becomes Solein—a yellow powder made up of single-cell protein, with a nutrient composition similar to wheat flour.

Solar Foods claims that Solein removes most of the emissions associated with modern agriculture, which is responsible for almost one-third of all greenhouse gas emissions. “One kilogram of Solein sends out 0.2 kilogram of CO2e(二 氧化碳当量).In comparison.beef herds produce around 100 kilograms and chicken 10 kilograms,” said Vainikka. “ We can rermove the climate impact of modem food systems on the planet, which today account for about 30 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.” He further stressed that while the company’s factories also require some land used for industrial farming, only about one-tenth of the land is needed compared to photosynthesis (光合作用). “We could free up agricultural land to grow back forests,” he added, “and those remove carbon permanently from the atmosphere.”

Probably optimists are now contenting themselves with the pleasant scene of masses of trees absorbing CO2: on the planet. However, while that may sound great, Vainikka put it right, “It can happen only if we produce enough Solein from CO, to replace meat and dairy at a large scale.”And that still remains a long way to go.

【1】What can we say about Solein?

    A.It is in the air.

B.It can be changed into meat.

    C.It can take in CO2.

D.It is good for the environment.

【2】What are needed to produce Solein according to Paragraph 2?

    A.Wine and water.

    B.Water and minerals.

    C.Mierobes and yogurt.

    D.Wine and microbes.

【3】What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us about Solein?

    A.Its present situation.

    B.Its possible benefits.

    C.Its production process.

    D.Its potential drawbacks.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    A.Air Protein Produced, CO, Reduced

    B.Collecting Air, Removing CO2

    C.Climate Changing, Danger Coming

    D.Protect Earth, Save Ourselves

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Ollie Simmons was good at maths, but Ruby Riley wasn’t. Well, Ruby didn’t think she was. She sat next to Ollie and so she just copied him. This was the best way she had found to do maths and she didn’t have to think at all.

One day the teacher said, “We will be having a maths test after lunch.” Ruby felt there was a moth moving its wings inside her. “Can I copy off you?” she whispered to Ollie. Ollie thought for a minute. “What will you give me?” he whispered back. Ruby showed Ollie a stone she had. It was round and smooth and the colour of the sea. “OK!” he said, “Give me the stone, and then you can copy me.” Ollie Simmons got one hundred percent in the maths test and so did Ruby. Their names went on the top of the maths champs chart.

Every week there was a maths test and every week Ollie Simmons and Ruby Riley got one hundred percent. Ollie had to share the top place with Ruby, but it was worth it. He had a torch, a key chain, a golf ball and a gift box!

One day, there was a maths test again. This time, Ruby picked a watch, thinking everything would go as usual—Ollie would let her copy and they would go on the top of the chart together again. But she was wrong. The headmaster came into Ruby’s class. “I want to see Ollie Simmons,” she said. Ollie was gone for a long time. Then the door opened. It was the headmaster again. “Ruby Riley,” she said, “Come with me, please.” Ruby felt like a bird in a cage—there was no way to escape. The headmaster told Ruby that every lunchtime for five weeks she had to do maths. “You have to learn to think for yourself,” she said. “And Ollie has to learn a lesson, too. He’s going to teach you.”
