二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Scientists called for wide-ranging research into whether more volcanoes, earthquakes and landslides could be triggered by rising global temperatures under global warming. Significant warming of’ the atmosphere in the distant past can be linked to changes- in geological activity, they say. Suggestions that climate change predicted for coming decades could bring similar changes remain speculative(猜测性的), but the scientists say there is enough evidence to take the threat seriously. Some experts have already linked current levels of global warming lo landslides in mountain regions.

Richard Betts, a researcher at the Met Office Hadley Centre, said, “This is a new interesting academic arena. It was previously assumed there was no link between climate change and geological events, but it is possible to speculate that climate change might make some more likely. If we do get large amounts of climate change in the long term, then we might see some impacts.”

Experts say global warming could affect geological risks because of the way it can move large amounts of mass around on the Earth’s surface. Melting glaciers and rising sea levels shift the distribution of huge amounts of water, which release and increase pressures through the ground. These pressure changes could make geological shifts more likely. Research from Germany suggests that the Earth’s surface can sometimes be so close to failure that tiny changes in its pressure can trigger quakes.

Writing in a special series of scientific papers on the topic published by the Royal Society, Bill MecGuire, head of the Benfield Hazard Research Centre at University College London, says, “In relation to man-made climate change, modeling studies and speculation of current trends point towards increased rink in relation to a range of geological rinks in a warmer world, while observations suggest that ongoing rise in global average temperatures may already be resulting in a risky response from the geosphere(陆界).”

【1】According to the passage, which aspect probably results in geological activities?

    A.Global temperatures.

    B.Human activities.

    C.Water levels.

    D.Global warming.

【2】What’s the idea of Richard Betts?

A.Research in global warming features something new and interesting.

B.The impacts of climate change in the long term are invisible.

C.Climate change is bound to trigger geological event8.

D.Geological events are not related to climate change.

【3】How could geological risks be affected?

A.By making the distribution of waters equal.

B.By causing the surface covered by sea water.

C.By changing the pressure of the Earth’s surface.

D.By leading to the occurrence of extreme weather.

【4】what is the best title for the passage?

    A.One Well-known Assumption

    B.Speculation on Global Warming

    C.An Inspiring Scientific Discovery

D.A Possible Element in Geological Risks

  • 22、A city in Denmark is about to become the first in the world to provide most of its citizens with fresh water using only the energy created from household wastewater.

The Marselisborg Wastewater Treatment Plant (MWTP) in Aarhus has undergone improvements that mean it can now produce more than 150 percent of the electricity needed to run the plant. The extra power can be used to pump drinking water around the city. As well as regularly powering the entire water system of 200, 000 people living in the inner city area, any unwanted electricity could be sold into the local power network.

The plant produces energy from the biogas which creates out of household wastewater. Carbon is removed from the wastewater and pumped into digesters (沼气池) kept at 38℃ filled with bacteria. These produce biogas — mostly methane — that is then burned to make heat and electricity.

Upgrading the facilities in Marselisborg required nearly €3 million, but Aarhus Water expects that to be recovered in just five years. Other cities in Denmark, including Copenhagen, have been trying to copy the example of Aarhus.

When talking about copying Denmark’s experience, Molly Walton, energy analyst at International Energy Agency, says, scientists and engineers would firstly have to improve energy efficiency; and it requires an enormous amount of money that could considerably increase the price of the water. Moreover, to work, the wastewater plant needs to be big enough to produce enough biogas, and even the wastewater has to be the right-mix. If it’s watered down by much storm or groundwater, it will be almost impossible to recover energy, Walton says.

With rising global temperatures, more energy will be needed to provide fresh water from other sources such as seawater. The city’s action may not solve the problems, but it is a big step in the right direction.

【1】What can we learn about the city Aarhus?

A.Aarhus can sell green energy to Denmark.

B.The plant in Aarhus can produce extra power.

C.The plant in Aarhus makes good use of carbon.

D.Aarhus is the first city to benefit from household wastewater.

【2】Why is it difficult to practise the way of MWTP?

    A.The global temperature is rising.

    B.Energy efficiency needs improving.

C.The plant is too big to produce biogas.

    D.MWTP requires demanding conditions.

【3】What is Molly Walton’s attitude towards copying Denmark’s example?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Negative.

    C.Uninterested.

    D.Positive.

【4】What does the passage mainly tell us?

A.Copying the example of Aarhus cost a lot.

B.MWTP has improved the processing of biogas.

C.A plant in Aarhus turns wastewater into energy.

D.The water service in Aarhus needs more energy.

  • 24、   If you're one of the millions of Americans now trapped in home because of the COVID-19it might feel like you're cooking more than you've ever cooked in your entire life. And maybe you' re planning to reduce your home food wastes. A good way of dealing with them is to learn to make compost (堆肥).

Select your food wastes. Start with fruits and vegetables — the skin of a sweet potatothe top of your strawberry. Also tea bags, coffee grounds, old flowers and even eggshells are good raw materials. Store these food wastes in a container so you can add them bit by bit. The container doesn't have to be bought online. It can just be an old milk carton (纸箱) or an old wooden chest —just work with what you have available. Also, you can store the food wastes in a bag in your freezer or fridge. That's an easy way to avoid odors and insects in your kitchen.

The crucial step is to make the compost mix. In the world of composting you're inevitably going to hear about 'the greens and browns'—the two main elements for your mix. 'Greens' are typically wet food wastes, like fruit and vegetable peelings. They are a crucial part for the growth of organisms (微生物),'Browns" are typically dry and they are more carbon rich like newspapers, dried leavesand pine needles. A good thing to remember is when you're layering put the dry browns on the bottom with the wet greens on the top because they allow water and air to flow. That will make sure organisms can do their job.

How long do you have to wait for the compost breakdown? If it's hot, you could get there in two months pretty easy. If it's cold, you could be there in six months, And for every component to break down, it might be a year.

In the end 'your nose knows' when the compost is ready. It just smells so woody, earthy, sweet or sometimes sour. The smell can tell how well you work at your compost.

1What is a good solution to your home food wastes?

A.Make a plan and reduce the wastes.

B.Collect the picked wastes to make compost.

C.Select the wastes and bury them into the earth.

D.Pick the wastes and put them in a bag in your fridge.

2What plays a crucial role in making the compost mix?

    A.Wet 'greens'

    B.Dry "browns'

    C.Carbon rich materials.

    D.Wet 'greens' and dry 'browns'.

3Why should the 'browns' be put on the bottom with the 'greens' on the top?

A.To help the organism work on the compost efficiently.

B.To save more space for the water and air to flow.

C.To allow the water and air to flow into the container.

D.To make sure the organism can live longer and better.

4What does the author feel about making compost?

    A.Pretty easy and fun.

    B.Complex and time killing.

    C.Demanding patience but worthwhile.

D.Calling for hard work but enjoyable.
