    The Adirondack

Considered one of the top ten scenic train rides in the world, the Adirondack train route travels from New York City's Penn Station to Montreal, Canada. The trip is great for a weekend away in either Montreal or Manhattan. The route will take you past West Point Academy, the Hudson River Valley and fifty miles of Lake Champlain.

    The Vermonter

The trip from Washington, D. C. to St. Albans, Vermont, takes you from the U.S. capital, through the beautiful New England states of Connecticut and Massachusetts on the way to Vermont. • 22、   Whether hunting or competing for limited space and resources, humans are the planet’s super predator(捕食者). As the human population expands, it’s getting harder for other creatures to find somewhere to hide during the day. Now new findings indicate animals around the world have come up with another strategy: They are becoming nocturnal.

In a paper published in Science, researchers analyzed 76 previous scientific studies about human impact on animal activity. They compared animals’ activity during the day and night in areas of high human disturbance (from hunting or farming to hiking and other outdoor recreation) and low human disturbance (relatively natural conditions). The analysis showed animals are becoming an average of 1.36 times more nocturnal due to high human disturbance.

For example, in Poland wild boars go from 48% nocturnal in natural forests to 90% nocturnal in urban areas. Even activities people consider relatively innocuous, such as hiking and wildlife viewing, strongly affected animals’ daily rhythms. “We think that we’re leaving no trace often when we’re outdoors, but we can be having lasting consequences on animal behavior,” says Kaitlyn Gaynor, lead researcher for the study.

This is not the first time animals have had to live at night; during the time of dinosaurs, they were also nocturnal. “Dinosaurs were this ubiquitous(无处不在的), scary force, and only after their extinction did mammals(哺乳动物) emerge into the daylight,” Gaynor says. “And now humans have taken over and are pushing other animals back into the night.”

Scientists suspect becoming nocturnal may hurt those species highly adapted to the sun. They might not be able to live well at night, which would ultimately hurt their chances of survival and reproduction. Perhaps even more alarming effects could be in the wider ecosystem. In California’s Santa Cruz Mountains, coyotes have been more nocturnal in response to hikers and have started to alter their diets from daytime prey, such as squirrels and birds, to nocturnal prey, such as rats and rabbits.

Exactly how ecological communities will change, and whether it will be for better or worse, requires further study. Some nighttime shifts may benefit both animals and humans, Gaynor notes. For instance, tigers in Nepal are avoiding potentially deadly conflicts with people as they become more nocturnal.

Studies like this one will eventually help conservation managers make better decisions about how to protect ecosystems. “We’ll need to understand local dynamics to really understand how we should be changing management of wildlife populations or human activities,” Gaynor notes, “One potential approach might be to manage the timing of human activities so that we leave some of the daylight for other animals.”

【1】How do animals respond to increasing human disturbance?

    A.By limiting food intake.

    B.By leaving their habitat.

    C.By controlling population.

    D.By adjusting daily routine.

【2】What does the underlined word “innocuous” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Harmless.

    B.Recreational.

    C.Organized.

    D.Irregular.

【3】Why does the author mention dinosaurs?

A.To highlight the importance of daylight.

B.To indicate the domination of humans.

    C.To illustrate mammals’ adaptability.

    D.To demonstrate dinosaurs’ power.

【4】What can we learn about animals’ becoming nocturnal?

A.It has led to a new ecological balance.

    B.It demands more conservation areas.

    C.It may encourage bio-diversity.

    D.It might be double-edged.

  • 23、Kong Zi , also called Confucius (551-479 B.C) , and Socrates (469-399 B. C) lived only a hundred years apart , and during their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas , and how these ideas in turn ,shaped their societies.

Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates lived allowed him to be more radical than Confucius. Unlike Confucius, Socrates was not asked by rules how to govern effectively. Thus, Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its own sake. Confucius, on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went out to government service.

Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life:” Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart. Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. He believed that the superior class should rule the inferior(下层的)classes.

For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and the community of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the center of the society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations.

Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.

【1】Which of the following is TURE according to the first paragraph?

    A. Socrates and Confucius had much in common,

    B. Confucius had much influence on Socrates’ ideas.

    C. The societies were influenced by the philosophers’ ideas.

    D. There were cultural exchanges between China and Greece.

2Socrates shared with Confucius the idea that .

    A. all men were equal when they were born

    B. the lower classed should be ruled by the upper class

    C. the purpose of man was to seek freedom and wisdom

    D. people should not ask others to do what they did not want to

3What made some people different from others according to Confucius?

    A. Family.      B. Potential.

    C. Knowledge. D. Community.

4This passage is organized in the pattern of   .

    A. time and events  B. comparison and contrast

    C. cause and effect   D. definition and classification

  • 24、More than a billion people around the world have smart phones, almost all of which come with some kind of navigation app such as Apple Maps or Amap. This raises the age-old question we meet with any technology: What abilities is our brain losing to these apps? But also, importantly: What abilities are we gaining?

Talking with people who are good at finding their way around or good at using paper maps, I often hear a lot of annoyance with digital maps. North/south direction gets messed up, and you can see only a small section at a time. I can really understand that it may be quite disturbing for the already skilled to be limited to a small phone screen.

But consider what digital navigation aids have meant for someone like me. Although being a frequent traveler, I'm so terrible at finding my way that I still use Apple Maps almost every day in the small town where I have lived for many years.

In many developed nations, street names and house numbers can be meaningful, and instructions such as go north for three blocks and──then west’’ make sense to those familiar with these rules. In Istanbul, however, where I grew up, none of those hold true. For one thing, the locals seldom use street names. Besides, the city is full of winding and ancient alleys(小巷) that cross with newer avenues at many angles. In such places, you’d better turn to the locals. In the countryside, however, there is often nobody outside to ask. In fact, along came Apple Maps, like a fairy grandmother whispering directions in my ear. Since then, I travel with a lot more confidence, and my world has opened up.

Which brings me back to my original question: While we often lose some skills after depending on new technology, this new equipment may also allow us to gain new abilities. Maybe when technology closes a door, we should also look for the doors it opens.

【1】Why do people who are skilled at reading paper maps feel upset?

A.They are interested in reading paper maps,

B.They don’t know how to use navigation, apps.

C.They are limited to a single smart phone app.

D.They are confused by digital maps’ direction.

【2】According to the text, which is the best way to find the destination in Istanbul?

    A.Asking local people the way.

    B.Following the navigation app.

C.Getting familiar with the city rules.

D.Looking for street names and house numbers.

【3】What’s the author’s attitude towards the navigation apps?

    A.Cautious

    B.Ambiguous

    C.Favorable

    D.Critical

【4】What could be the best title of the passage?

    A.Benefits of Navigation Apps

    B.Disadvantages of Navigation Apps

C.My World Opens Up by New Technology

D.Have Navigation Apps Worsened Our Brain?
