二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can have a different understanding about it.

When a person is starving, that’s not the time to fill their head with knowledge but to first give the person a fish-eradicating their hunger-and only then teach them to fish. Far too often, people ignore this common sense first step. They see someone who is struggling, and they rush to offer wisdom. “Let me tell you what I’d do in your position,” a well-meaning individual might offer.

But few of us understand the anxiety, confusion and uncertainty that come with overwhelming need. People meeting with personal disasters don’t have the ability to think straight. Their nerves may be shot. Their confidence may be non-existent. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s situation?

Rushing to offer a struggling person long-term advice is a waste of time. Instead, it makes far more sense to help them regain their emotional balance. Once their ears, heart and mind open, you’ll have an opportunity to teach a new skill.

But how do we know whether a person needs a fish before a fishing lesson? Two things: One is the ability to pay attention. We need to know whether the other person is open and receptive, or looking at the world through narrowed eyes? You can’t just take their words but have to look at how the person acts and what they don’t say. The other is empathy (共情).The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson.

  • 23、   I’m racing on the 1,500-metre track (跑道) with my friend, Mary. I’m tired and my throat is giving me much pain. I want to stop but a voice repeating in my head keeps me running: “No one knows what the result will be. Everything is still possible.” Today, I have to fight with myself.

Nine years ago, when I was a 6-year-old girl, my mother took me on a trip. We went to the foot of a high mountain which she told me that we would climb. I had never done this before and the thought of it made me very happy.

At the beginning, I climbed fast. But half an hour later, when I was thirsty and tired, I just stopped and sat upon the ground, completely silent. My mom came and sat next to me.

She said, “Get up and go on!”

Almost shouting, and with tears in my eyes, I replied, “No, I don’t want to do this. It’s too tiring and I am thirsty. I don’t like it. I want to go back home now.”

Patiently she explained, “Listen, my dear. If you try your best, anything is possible. If you don’t try, your dreams will never come true. However hard the task is, we must finish it. You will never know how beautiful the scenery looks unless you reach the top of the mountain.”

Hearing her words, I stopped crying and started to climb again. Finally I made it; I did reach the top of the mountain and enjoyed the glorious view.

Today I’m on the racing track. I’m going to keep running because I know its always worthwhile (值得做的) to finish.

And in the end I managed it; I got through the finish line. Although it was really difficult and I did not win, I did make it. As former Indian President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (1931-2015) said, “Never stop fighting until you arrive at your destined (命定的) place — that is, the unique you.”

  • 24、A Lighter Touch

In recent years, superheroes such as Superman, Thor, Iron Man, and Black Panther have starred in film series with complex, serious storylines about the end of the universe. However, the makers of Shazam! which came out in China on April 5,have a different opinion on the superhero movie.

It’s “just a light, funny...action comedy about a boy in a superman's body”, wrote Owen Gleiberman in his review for Variety magazine.

Billy Batson, the film's main character, is a 14-year-old who's been in and out of foster homes(寄养家庭). One day, on the way to another home, Batson escapes to the subway and meets a wizard(巫师), who gives him magical powers. Whenever Batson says "Shazam", he changes into an adult-sized man with superhuman strength.

But how does he use his new superpowers? With the help of his new foster brother Freddie Freeman, Batson tests his strength like any teenager would do-by breaking the rules. He breaks a soda machine to get a drink, tricks his teachers, and even buys beer.

While the film is fun and joyous, it also has emotional weight. A major part of the story is Batson searching for his real mother. And later when Batson faces the evil Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, a former misfit kid himself, he realizes that his new found superpowers can't solve all the problems, and that he has something valuable to protect-his new family.

“With strong messages about families of all shapes and sizes and the importance of supporting and educating young people, Shazam! really feels like the movie we need right now,” Den of Geek website noted.

1How is Shazam different from other superhero movies?

A.It has a complex, serious storyline. B.It is about the end of the universe.

C.It has several important characters. D.It has a light and funny atmosphere.

B.He lives with a wizard near the subway.

C.He enjoys his time with his foster family.

3What can we learn about Batson from the second to last paragraph?

A.He fails to find his real mother in the end.

B.He loves playing tricks with his magic powers.

C.He realizes what his new family means to him.

D.He teaches Dr. Thaddeus Sivana to be a good person.

4What's the main purpose of the article?

A.To share the author's view about families.
