21、My husband is more a kid at heart than I am, so he says we need to find souvenirs for the grandkids while on a trip to Savannah.
I can be a kid at heart, too, but I also can be a mathematician — and even cheap, ugly souvenirs add up quickly when you have 11 grandkids.
Children are of one mind on the subject — they like souvenirs and they want them. So we are digging through piles of (成堆的) cheap key fobs (钥匙链), plastic sun hats, chocolate treats that will melt in the heat, and ridiculous T-shirts, finding nothing.
We go with two hats for the boys but are still empty-handed for the nine girls. Then I spot small bracelets (手链) in a rainbow of colors.
“What about these? ” I ask the husband.
He turns one over a couple of times and says, “Nice.”
The bracelets are made of small beads (珠子) shaped like starfish and turtles. They all look like rock candy, which can be eaten and was a popular souvenir when we were kids. We buy nine and make a mental note: tell the girls not to eat them.
As the clerk rings up the bracelets, I remember a souvenir I had as a girl. We had gone to the east coast and could choose one thing in a shop to remember our trip by. My sister and I chose what we liked. Mine was a blue plastic soapbox with the lid (盖子) covered in silver glitter (小闪光物) and topped with a pink flamingo (火烈鸟). It was cheap and tacky (俗气的) and I believed it was the loveliest thing a girl could own. It was too beautiful to put soap inside, so it sat in a dresser drawer year after year, slowly aging, yellowing, the glitter fling off. But it is still a reminder of a family trip long ago.
The girls are married and have families of their own, and those souvenirs are still in the dresser drawers in their old bedrooms.
I have been won over to the idea that even cheap and tacky souvenirs may have worth and value. Tiny trinkets (小饰品) say I was thinking of you even though we were apart. That’s always a good investment (投资).

22、A remarkable new study on how whales behaved when attacked by humans in the 19th century has implications for the way they react to changes caused by humans in the 2Ist century.
The paper is authored by Whitehead and Rendellt at Dalhousie University and their research addresses an age- -old question: if whales are so smart, why did they hang around to be killed? The answer? They didn't. Using newly digitised (数字化的) logbooks detailing the hunting of whales in the north Pacific, the authors discovered that within just a few years, the strike rate of the whalers’ harpoons(捕鲸者的鱼叉) fell by 58%. This simple fact leads to an astonishing conclusion: that information about what was happening to them was being collectively shared among the whales, who made vital changes to their behaviour. They learned quickly from their mistakes.
“Sperm whales have a traditional way of reacting to attacks from orca (杀人鲸),” notes Whitehead. Before humans, orca were their only predators (捕食者), against whom sperm whales form defensive circles, their powerful taills held outwards to keep predators at bay, “But such techniques just made it easier for the whalers to kill them,” says Whitehead.
Sperm whales are highly socialised animals, able to communicate over great distances. Information about the new dangers may have been passed on in the same way they share knowledge about feeding grounds. They also possess the largest brain on the planet. It is not hard to imagine that they understood what was happening to them.
The hunters themselves realised the whales’efforts to escape. They saw that the animals appeared to communicate the threat within their attacked groups. Abandoning their usual defensive formations, the whales swam upwind to escape the hunters, ships, themselves wind-powered.
Now, just as whales are beginning to recover from the industrial destruction by 20th-century whaling fleets, whose steamships and grenade harpoons no whale could escape from, they face new threats created by our technology. “They’re having to learn not to get hit by ships, cope with the depredations (劫掠) of long line fishing, the changing source of their food due to climate change,”Whitehead says. “The same sort of urgent social learning the animals experienced in the whale wars of two centuries ago is reflected in the way they negotiate today's uncertain world.”
【1】What is the new study mainly about?
A.Whales’ social lives.
B.Whales’emotional intelligence.
C.Whales’ reaction to climate changes.
D.Whales’ behavior under human attack.
【2】What caused whales to make changes to escape the hunters’ ship?
A.The wind in their favor.
B.Their powerful physical strength.
C.The shared ship attack information.
D.Their usual defensive formations.
【3】What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5?

23、 Plants, and the insects which rely on them, are the living foundations of our planet. But these foundations are under stress because we have a tendency to replace fields and forests with decorative trees and shrubs imported from around the world. Adding to the problem, our obsession (痴迷) with perfection leads us to use a lot of pesticides (杀虫剂).
These actions are part of the reason global biodiversity is crashing. There are over three billion fewer wild birds in North America than there were in 1970. Recent research shows that insect numbers, even in nature reserves, have fallen, and 40 percent of all insect species may be extinct within a few decades. This is discouraging news; however, there are actions we can take to help bring at least some species back.
The first step is to redefine our concept of “garden” to include more than just plants. We need to intentionally share our space, and not just with the birds, bees and butterflies that visit our flowers, but also with the little insects that may eat a part (very rarely all) of our plants. Therefore, we must limit pesticide use. It’s crucial to support nature’s recovery, and it’s much better for everyone: no doctor has ever recommended long-term exposure to pesticides.
Many drought-tolerant plants brought in from across the planet are being passed off as ecofriendly. However, mostly they’re not. Yes, you’re saving water, but these foreign plants can become disasters when they escape our yards. Helping the environment can be about more than saving water. Even in drier areas, like the American West, the selection of attractive native plants to choose from is vast. If dry is your style, there are native wildflowers, flowering bushes and trees that allow you to save water and nature.
Xeriscapes (节水型园艺) leave many gardeners thirsting for green, and there’s an important alternative that has been largely ignored. For those disenchanted with dry landscaping, using underappreciated and water-loving native plants to make your garden a real-life oasis (绿洲) could be lifesaving to wildlife. In nature, this unsung group of native plants is limited to riparian zones, the narrow belts of green along water bodies, but if consumers demand them, nurseries will increasingly carry these riparian species, and the presence of such plants in the garden will provide for many animals including not just butterflies and their relatives but also colorful birds.
The ideal garden would offer a combination of drought-tolerant native plants and a few species that need a little more water, providing options for little guests and the bigger ones that will come to eat them. As more creatures stop by to share our yards, we will be making nature, and us all, a little healthier.
【1】What do we know about insect species?
A.They have an impact on the diversity of plants.
B.They disappear because of lack of nature reserves.
C.They decrease partly due to our pursuit for perfection.
D.They are the reason why we replace fields and forests.

24、When you say the word donkey, what things come to your mind? A few people might say they’re cute, but the majority think they’re stubborn, dumb and all-round less capable than their horse relatives.
However, this wasn’t the case for a recently unearthed ancient Chinese noblewoman who was unexpectedly found buried with her donkeys. Published in the journal Antiquity in March, Chinese archaeologists (考古学家) first discovered the tomb in Xi’an, Shaanxi, in 2012. The team examined the remains and identified the body as Cui Shi, a Tang Dynasty high-born lady who died in 878 AD.
Speaking to Science Magazine in 2012, the study’s co-author, Fiona Marshall, said the finding caused confusion as “donkeys … are not associated with high-status people”.
However, following years of further research, the team discovered artworks and artifacts that showed a sport known as “Lvju”. This was similar to modern-day polo (马球) and was popular among noble (高贵的) women at the time. They preferred to use donkeys instead of full-sized horses for safety reasons, due to their smaller size and slower speed.
Speaking to CNN, Marshall later said, “Historical documents also showed that ladies of the late Tang court loved to play donkey polo.”
At that time in Chinese history, animals were often placed in tombs so that they could be used for a specific purpose in the afterlife. The study determined that Cui Shi likely requested that her beloved donkeys be buried with her, so that she could continue her favorite sport after death. In total, three donkeys were found inside her tomb with riding gear (装备), including stirrups (马镫). “This context provides evidence that the donkeys in her tomb were for polo, not transport,” lead author Hu Songmei of the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology told Science Magazine.
Before the study, it was believed that donkeys were only used to carry loads, but now it may be time to see them as a sign of achieving high social status(地位), well, in ancient times.

26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I live with my husband, Tyrone, in San Luis Obispo, California, about three miles from the beach. Every few years, the humpback whales come into the bay for a few days while migrating. November 2020 was one of those times, so we took out our yellow double kayak (皮艇) to watch the wildlife. We paddled (用桨划船) out the sea and saw seals, dolphins, and about 20 whales feeding on silverfish. We were in amazement watching these graceful giant creatures — each one about 50 feet long—spray through their blowholes.
At the time, my friend Liz was staying with us. The next day, I asked her if she wanted to go out on the water to see them. With no such experience, she refused. “There’s nothing to worry about,” I assured her. “The boat is stable, and we can turn back anytime.” Finally, she agreed to join me. I didn’t want her to miss this great experience and regret it later.
At 8:30 the following morning when we got out on the water, there were already about 15 other kayakers and surfers in the bay. After a half-hour, we had our first whale sighting: two humpbacks swimming toward us. How amazing to be that close to a creature that size, I thought, as the whales dipped under the waterline.
When the whales went down, they left what looked like oil on the water. I figured if we paddled toward that spot, we’d be safe from the whales, since they’d just left. We followed them at a distance—or what I thought was a distance. Suddenly, a tightly packed group of silverfish started jumping out of the water into our kayak. Oh no! We were being attacked.
