二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Mounting a telescope on the balcony at home, Wang Zhipu, a 16-year-old boy from Fujian Province, observes the skies, takes photos and begins his voyage into space after class. Recently, his efforts were rewarded when he won the title of “Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2021” in the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s annual astrophotography contest. His winning entry, entitled Family Photo of the Solar System, shows seven of the eight planets lined up horizontally, with the sun on the left and moon on the right, both pictured larger in size than normal.

“All families are unconventional, so I adored this fresh, gently playful concept around the solar system,” said the competition judge Sue Prichard while talking about Wang’s picture. “A meaningful technically accomplished work from a rising star of astronomical photography.”

It hasn’t been easy taking pictures of outer space. For about half a year, Wang had to calculate the best time to shoot planets when they’re opposite the sun in Earth’s sky to get the brightest images. What’s more, he still needed to wait for clear weather to see better. For example, to capture a clear picture of Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, which is often cited as the most difficult of the five brightest planets to see with the naked eye, Wang tried to shoot it three times in the early morning but failed. At sunset, he shot 10, 000 frames of video and selected several thousand better frames to overlay, further refine them and form a more satisfactory picture.

Sometimes Wang would be so absorbed in his observations that he wouldn’t go downstairs to fetch a coat, even in the middle of winter. Other times, he stood for hours under the burning sun to get the perfect shot. To get an ideal shot, he often gets up at dawn, sleeps early to wake up at midnight, and even takes time off from evening classes when necessary.

【1】What kind of feeling does Sue Prichard show for Wang’s prizewinning picture?

    A.Curiosity.

    B.Indifference.

    C.Appreciation.

    D.Anxiety.

【2】What did Wang need to do in preparation for his photographing?

A.Figure out when the planets shine best.

B.Find out where clear weather can be seen.

C.Work out how far the planets are from the sun.

D.Make out when the planets face the earth most directly.

【3】What’s the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.Wang’s passion for outer space.

    B.Wang’s habits of observing stars.

    C.Wang’s addiction to shooting skills.

    D.Wang’s choices of shooting occasions.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Stars Gathering, Teenager Is the Brightest

B.Medals Shining, Teenagers Gains the Gold

C.Eyes on the Stars, Teenager Wins Top Photo-prize

D.Dreams in Heart, Teenager Succeeds in Top Contest

  • 22、There are at least 80,000 registered charities in Canada, ranging from churches to nursing homes to community centres. The latest report from the Canadian Philanthropy Survey (CIC) listed the top 10 charities in the country, and the following are among them.

  • 23、   Connie Monroe clicks a button, turns her wrist and watches as her neighborhood floods. The reed-covered shorelines are first to go. Then, the baseball fields at Fleming Park. By the time seawater reaches the senior center, it has covered streets, flooding more than a dozen complexes that she can see.

Monroe moves her head up and down, side to side, taking in the simulated (模拟的) view. This is what could happen to Turner Station, a historic African American community, as sea levels rise.

“Everything’s underwater. The school is underwater. Our house is underwater,” Monroe says. A frown (皱眉) forms below the virtual reality headset. “Is the water really supposed to get that high?”

Climate change presents many challenges to coastal communities, but one of the most worrisome problems is: how do you show people — and convince them — of a possible future?

“It’s one thing to hear or read the news that sea levels could rise as high as 7 feet in Maryland by the end of the century under worst-case situations, but it’s another to imagine what that will look like in your own backyard,” says Jackie Specht, the coastal science program manager. “And if it’s hard to imagine, it’s hard to face and prioritize.”

Communicating the realness and immediacy of the climate threat is important to climate researchers and those aiming to prevent its causes. But it’s also paramount to communities faced with coming changes that are already unavoidable.

Climate projects need public support and input. That’s why Monroe and other residents at this recent community meeting are being directed to sit in metal chairs, put on virtual reality headsets and watch their homes flood.

Virtual reality is an immersive (沉浸式的) experience that can trick the human brain into thinking it’s real. But tricking people is not the goal of the sea level rise simulation being used at Turner Station, says Juliano Calil, one of the program’s developers.

The goal, he says, “is to help folks visualize the impacts of climate change and the solutions, and also discuss the trade-off between them.”

1What would you see in Turner Station as sea levels rise?

A.Shorelines covered by reeds. B.Baseball fields used as parks.

C.Streets blocked with bricks. D.Buildings drowned in water.

2What does Jackie Specht suggest in Paragraph 5?

A.People are relatively safer in their backyards.

B.People don’t feel on the scene through the news.

C.The severity of disaster is beyond imagination.

D.The sea level is bound to rise 7 feet in Maryland.

3Why is the virtual reality experience provided in the community meeting?

A.To prove climate threat. B.To seek public backing.

C.To help scientific research. D.To introduce VR technology.

4Which of the following best explains the underlined words “the trade-off” in the last paragraph?

    A.The balance. B.The conflict.

    C.The business. D.The similarity.

  • 24、There has been an outpouring of love for a 23-year-old disabled woman whose dog was killed in front of her while a groomer(美容师) tried to trim(修剪) its claws.

Calls and e-mails came from as far away as the Upper Peninsula and Arizona as well as Oakland and Macomb counties, offering Laurie Crouch, who uses a wheelchair because of multiple sclerosis(硬化症), everything from dogs to money, such as that from Jason Daly of Roseville who said, I would like to buy her a new dog.”

A story about the death of Crouch’s pet, Gooch, was printed on the front page of Macomb Daily. Crouch said a man sat on the dog to trim its nails. Gooch died after one claw was trimmed.

Crouch yelled at the groomer to stop when she saw Gooch was struggling to breathe, but she said she was ignored. “If I could have walked, I would have put my hands on her and pulled her off my dog and physically stopped her, but I can’t do that.” Gooch was not a trained service animal, but naturally helped Crouch by picking up things for her.

“This case is absolute animal abuse(虐待),” Larry Obrecht, division manager of the Oakland County Animal Shelter in Auburn Hills, said.

People who read the story contacted Oakland Press to offer help. A message, from Rebecca Amett of Giggles N Wiggles Puppy Rescue, in Roseville, said, “We have puppies to donate and want to help the young woman who lost her service dog.”

“When Gooch was with me, I was happy,” Crouch said, “I think I can be happy again but no animal can replace Gooch. There’s never going to be another Gooch out there but I think I will find a dog that can bring me joy again.”

【1】What does the passage mainly tell us?

    A. A disabled woman’s service dog.

    B. A cruel groomer killed a disabled woman’s dog.

    C. People’s love for a disabled woman who lost her dog.

    A. offer help and care to Laurie Crouch.

    B. give their angry voice to the groomer.

    C. offer a cure for Crouch’s disease.

    D. tell Crouch how to punish the groomer.

【3】We can infer from the passage that .

  • 26、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was raining pretty hard on Halloween, but that wasn't going to stop my little sister Kate and me from trick-or-treating. We decided to start at Miss Parson's house. Miss Parson was loved by us kids who lived near by because she often shared her self-made cookies with us. We usually finished them in a second, especially when we were hungry after class. Sometimes, when we visited her or did something for her, she always gave us Surprise.

Kate and I wondered what kinds of treats she'd offer. As we walked down the street, I held an umbrella, a bag for Candy, and my sister's hand. Jack-o-Lanterns gave soft light along the street. Spider webs hung in all the windows. Parents who were dressed up like monsters(怪物) stood in doorways. After we had walked a few blocks, we were wet from head to toes, and I felt Kate was trembling with cold.

There was a light on at Miss Parson's house, but there were no ghosts, goblins(小妖精), or Jack-o-Lanterns. We climbed up the steps and saw Miss Parson through a window. She was drinking a cup of hot tea.

“Maybe she doesn't celebrate Halloween,” Kate said with a sigh, disappointedly.

“Well, even if she doesn't, she usually likes it when we visit her," I said and knocked on the door.

Miss Parson seemed surprised when she opened it and saw our dressing. "Is today Halloween?" she asked.”I completely forgot. I am so sorry!”
