  • 21、   Instead of paying to ship the items you don't need to your new home, why not donate them? Your old household goods like furniture will go to a new home where they will be appreciated. Here are some charities that might help.

    Furniture Bank Network

Furniture Bank Network helps people furnish their homes with practical secondhand items donated by people within the community. Tax receipts for the value of the donated items are given to donors (捐赠者). Recipients get the furniture for free. People can get furnishings from their local Furniture Bank only if they are referred to the organization through one of its social service partners. It also encourages applicants to help the organization with volunteer work.

    Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a global nonprofit. It collects monetary donations to build and remodel affordable housing so that those in need can apply for. You can also donate furniture and other household goods to Habitat for Humanity. It resells these items in home improvement stores and uses the money to fund its humanitarian efforts.

    Goodwill

Goodwill resells donated furniture and other household items to fund its charitable objectives. Goodwill uses its earnings to provide career training and employment assistance to unemployed individuals. It also offers discounts to the people enrolled in its training programs, allowing them to affordably furnish their homes and buy clothes for their families.

    Pick up My Donation

Pick up My Donation isn't actually a donation center and it doesn't pick up your donations. Instead, it helps you find local nonprofits and charity shops that do. If your donation isn't large enough for a local nonprofit to send a truck, Pick up My Donation can still help. The company will put you in touch with a local moving company to pick up your donation and take it to a nearby center.

  • 22、A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, there was a large and magnificently brilliant star that shone across the young expanding universe. The light from that blue star travelled through space for billions of years, and then one day a few thin beams crashed into a polished mirror-the light bucket of the Hubble Space Telescope.

In a report published Wednesday in the journal Nature, a team of astronomers asserts that this is the most distant individual star ever seen. They describe it as 50 to 100 times more massive than our sun, and roughly 1 million times brighter, with its starlight having travelled 12.9 billion years to reach the telescope.

The lead author on the report, Brian Welch, gave the star a name: Earendel, meaning “morning stars”. “Earendel was found in a young galaxy known as the Sunrise Arc, and ‘morning stars’ seemed appropriate,” Welch said.

“This is one of the major discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope in its 32 years of observation, ” said Rogier Windhorst, a co-author of the report. In recent decades, astronomers have seen galaxies at that distance, and even farther away, but galaxies are collections of billions of stars and the very distant ones have typically been nothing more than smudges of light.

Despite its mass and brilliance, Earendel’s discovery would not have been possible were it not for the cosmic alignment. Between Hubble and the star lies a galaxy cluster, WHL0137-08,which is so huge that its mass wraps the fabric of space, creating a power of natural magnifying (放大) glass that magnifies the light form objects behind it, a phenomenon known as gravitational lensing (引力透镜效应). Earendel sits on or close to that space ripple, causing it to “pop out” from the general glow of its galaxy because the phenomenon magnified its brightness at least a thousand fold.

In interviews this week, several scientists who are not part of the Earendel team praised the discovery, noting that further observations could firm up the claim and potentially provide insights into the early evolution of stars.

【1】How does the first paragraph develop?

    A.By listing several figures.

    B.By making comparisons.

    C.By describing the process.

    D.By analyzing cause and effect.

【2】What can we learn from the passage?

A.The star Earendel is quite different from the Sun.

B.Brian Welch made the discovery of the Earendel alone.

C.Both Earendel and the galaxy Sunrise Arc are very old.

D.Astronomers have never discovered galaxies that far.

【3】According to Paragraph 5, why the star could be discovered?

A.Because the star is incredibly huge in its mass.

B.Because the star shines brightly enough to be detected.

C.Because the brightness of the star is enhanced enormously.

D.Because the Hubble space telescope is properly placed in space.

【4】What is the attitude of other scientists toward the discovery?

    A.Critical.

    B.Indifferent.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Appreciative.

  • 23、   Scientists have long known a fairly reliable way to extend life span in rodents(啮齿类动物) and other lab animals: Reduce the amount of calories they eat by 10 percent to 40 percent.

This strategy known as caloric restriction, has been shown to increase the life span of various organisms and reduce their rate of cancer and other age-related ailments. Whether it can do the same in people has been an open question. But an intriguing new study suggests that in young and middle-aged adults, chronically(慢性地) restricting calorie intake can have an impact on their health.

In the new study, researchers looked at a group of 143 healthy men and women who were instructed to practice caloric restriction for two years, with the aim of cutting the calories they consumed by 25 percent.

On average, the dieters managed to slash about 12 percent of their total calories, or roughly 300 calories a day, the amount in a few chocolate chip cookies or a small Starbucks Mocha. But the group saw many of their health markers improve.

They lost weight and body fat. Their blood pressure fell slightly, and they had better blood sugar control and less inflammation. At the same time, a control group of 75 healthy people who did not practice caloric restriction saw no improvements in any of these markers. Some of the benefits in the calorie restricted group stemmed from the fact that they lost a large amount of weight. However, the results of the survey suggest that caloric restriction might have some unique biological effects on disease pathways in the body.

Calorie restriction may be a useful tool for better health and weight loss, but it’s unclear whether the changes in the new study will ultimately translate into longevity and reductions in chronic disease, said Frank Hu, the chairman of the nutrition department at the Harvard, who was not involved in the research.

1What happened to the lab animals, after the amount of calories was reduced?

    A.More lab animals got cancers.

B.More Lab animals can live longer.

C.Health condition of lab animals got worse.

D.Lab animals will suffer from no disease in their future life.

2From the study, after caloric restriction, what happened to the 143 people?

    A.Their healthy markers improved.

B.They did not get chronic diseases.

C.They did not get lose any weight at all.

D.They did not eat chocolate chip cookies.

3Which work has the similar meaning to the underline word, slash?

    A.Reduce. B.Increase.

    C.Add. D.Beat.

4From Frank Hu’s words, what can be inferred?

A.Calorie restriction is beneficial to weight loss.

B.People with caloric restriction will love longer than others.

C.More people should be encouraged to take caloric restriction in life.

D.The relation between caloric restriction and longer lifespan is uncertain.

  • 24、   Most people aren’t good at creative problem solving for two reasons: (1) They are not trained in how to be creative. (2) They don’t understand group strength well enough to harness(驾驭)their power to maximize group creativity.

A key element of creativity is applying existing knowledge to a new problem. The more people getting involved in solving it, the more knowledge there is to work on it. Unfortunately, research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods fail to achieve that goal. When groups get together to exchange ideas, they actually come up with fewer ideas overall than if they each had worked alone.

To fix this problem, you should consider the two stages of group problem-solving: divergence(分散)and convergence(集中). Divergence happens when the group considers as many different potential solutions as possible. Convergence happens when the various proposed solutions are evaluated and reduced to a smaller set of candidate solutions to the current problem.

The essential principle of group creativity is that individuals working alone diverge, whereas group members working together converge. In groups, once a member states a potential solution, that makes others think about the problem similarly. That is why groups working together diverge less than individuals working alone.

Therefore, be aware of when to diverge and when to converge. For example, early in the problem-solving process, have group members work alone to write down statements describing the problem. Then get them back to discuss their descriptions. The group discussion will lead everyone to accept one or a small number of these statements to work on—this is healthy convergence.

When starting to generate solutions, you again want divergence. Have people work alone to start. Then collect people’s initial ideas and send them around to others and allow the divergence to continue as everyone individually builds on the ideas of other members.

Finally, let the group discuss the resulting ideas. This discussion will gradually lead the group to converge on a small number of candidate solutions.

This simple method works effectively, because it respects what individuals and groups do best.

1Research shows that the traditional brainstorming methods ______.

    A.actually limit group creativity

    B.greatly encourage group creativity

C.enable people to form more ideas together

D.prevent people’s involvement in the problems

2According to Para. 4, when a member presents an idea, others tend to_____.

    A.think the other way round

    B.follow his way of thinking

C.be more confident in their own ideas

D.be less willing to share their own ideas

3What should group members first do early in the problem-solving process?

A.Discuss the problem. B.Simplify the problem.

C.Put down group statements together. D.Write down their individual descriptions.

4How can each group member make changes to his initial solution?

A.By adding in collected evidence. B.By reorganizing his own words.

C.By drawing on others’ ideas. D.By making his statement briefer.

5What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

A.To advocate a way to make group thinking more effective.

B.To demonstrate the difficulty in organizing group thinking.

C.To highlight the differences between divergence and convergence.

D.To show the advantage of group thinking over individual thinking.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school, when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”

“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle with(插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with it and may get into mischief(trouble). Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me. ”

“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal. From then on, they looked down upon Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert for his rude behavior, because he learned that true courage is shown most in bearing misunderstanding when it was not deserved, and that he ought to be afraid of nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Instead, he had some other boys who also thought Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth. He struggled, and screamed for help, but all in vain. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could, but they did not even try to help him.
