  • 21、Four of the best films to watch this May

    The Bob’s Burgers Movie

After 12 seasons and more than 200 episodes, the much-loved animated sitcom finally makes it to the big screen. In the movie, a huge sinkhole opens in the street in front of a fast-food restaurant, so the brave children investigate. The series’ creator promises a “musical comedy mystery adventure” that retains the programme’s warmth and quickfire humour.

    Released internationally on 27 May

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The latest blockbuster (大片) has the Sorcerer Supreme risking beyond our own universe and into countless other realities, where he and Scarlet Witch meet various versions of themselves. The film’s director, Sam Raimi, is best known for The Evil Dead, and the Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, so who better to put horror and superheroes into one film? Raimi told Fandango. “It’s unknown what you’ll find in the multiverse. It’s within that unknown that suspense and darkness exists... Plus, Doctor Strange in the comics has always dealt in universes and dimensions that were quite spooky, so we tried to bring some of that into this film.”

    Released internationally on 6 May

    Top Gun: Maverick

It’s been delayed and delayed and delayed again, but Top Gun: Maverick is flying into cinemas at last, exactly four years after shooting began in May 2018. In the first Top Gun film, which came out back in 1986, Tom Cruise starred as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a fighter pilot in the US Navy. What we can expect are lots of supersonic flight sequences, and magazine-worthy shots of Cruise on the runway in his Aviator shades. Altogether now: “I feel the need, the need for speed.”

    Released internationally on 27 May

    Firestarter

Firestarter, a horror film about psychic-powered children, is adapted from Stephen King’s 1980 novel. It’s the story of Charlene, a girl with “pyrokinesis”: whenever she gets upset, things burst into flames. The previous adaptation came out in 1984, with Drew Barrymore in the title role. But the new film’s director, Keith Thomas, believes that there was room for improvement.

    Released internationally on 13 May

  • 22、The guzheng is a traditional Chinese musical instrument. It belongs to the zither (齐特琴) family of string instruments. It is the parent of many musical instruments of some other countries.

The guzheng should not be confused with the guqin, another ancient Chinese zither but without bridges. Now the guzheng is zither with movable bridges and usually 21 strings, although it can have from 15-25 strings. The guzheng’s strings were formerly made of silk, though most players used metal strings by the 20th century. Since the mid-20th century most performers use steel strings. The guzheng has a large resonant cavity (共振腔).

The guzheng has existed since the Warring States Period and became especially popular during the Qin dynasty. The number of strings on the guzheng has always fluctuated. There were as few as 6 to as many as 23 strings during the Tang dynasty. The earliest record of the guzheng belonged to the historian Sima Qian. Until 1961, the common guzheng had 16 strings, although by the mid-20th century 18-string guzheng were also in use. In 1961, Xu Zhenggao, together with Wang Xunzhi, introduced the first 21-string guzheng after two years of research and development. In 1960, they also invented the “S-shaped” left string rest, which was quickly adopted by all guzheng makers and is still used today. This curve allows for greater ease in tuning the strings and, combined with strings of different thickness, allows for greater resonance in both the deeper and the higher pitch (音调) ranges. The 21-string guzheng is the most commonly used one, but some traditional musicians still use the 16-string one.

【1】We can infer from Paragraph 1 that ________.

A.the guzheng is a musical instrument originating from Japan

B.there is only one kind of string instrument in China

C.there are many kinds of guzheng in the world

D.many musical instruments in other countries are related to the guzheng

【2】Which of the following material may NOT have been used to make the strings of the guzheng probably?

    A.Silk

    B.Steel

    C.Wood

    D.Copper

【3】The underlined word “fluctuated” in paragraph 3 can be replaced by “________”.

    A.jumped

    B.changed

    C.flowed

    D.waved

【4】Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

A.The guqing is an ancient Chinese zither with bridges.

B.The guzheng became espevially popular in the Tang Dynasty

    C.All musicians don’t use the 21-string guzheng.

D.Xu Zhenggao invented the “S-shaped” left string rest himself.

  • 24、Do you experience worries that get stuck in your head? Do these thoughts come with physical symptoms such as restlessness, muscle tension, or a racing heart? 【1】

Your parents may help you move past anxiety by telling you “You don’t feel safe, but you are safe” and giving you space to experience discomfort and coming out the other side of it. 【2】 Many of these are the ones that you can apply in the moment without them being obvious to others.

    ● Practise mindful noticing. Mindfulness is the exercise of being aware in the moment and noticing your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Practising mindfulness can help shift your focus away from anxious thoughts and toward self-regulation. Try focusing on an object in the environment and giving it all your attention. 【3】 The more details you point out, the more your brain will focus on that object instead of the anxious thoughts.

【4】 More demanding than simply counting in order, randomly picking numbers requires more attention. Again, this shifts attention away from anxiety-related thoughts and onto the task of reciting random numbers, which, though boring, do not cause anxiety.

    ● “Silence, Bruno!” 【5】 Recognizing an anxious thought for what it is can help put things in perspective and give one the chance to challenge the unhelpful thoughts. Disney’s 2021 film Luca delightfully demonstrates this skill. The character, Alberto, tells his friend Luca to quiet the doubt and fight against thoughts (Bruno) in his head by shouting, “Silence, Bruno!”

    A.Recite numbers in order.

    B.Count numbers randomly.

C.The best way is to talk back to anxiety.

D.If so, you may be suffering from anxiety.

E.The response is to look away from your anxiety.

F.And there are other techniques that can be helpful.

G.Do this by describing all the details of some object within your view.

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

On May 22, 2011, Joplin Missouri was struck by one of the deadliest tornadoes in recorded history. At first, many residents, including me, felt hopeless. It seemed like the end of the world. Faced with confusion, uncertainly, loss and homelessness, we looked for any light to lead us out of the darkness.

The home of my parents, who were in their eighties, was severely damaged. Their roof was blown away, and the roof from a nearby school crashed into the front of their house. In seconds, the house they had lived in for years became impossible to live in.

As soon as my parents safely moved, I tried to determine if any of their remaining possessions could be saved. Regrettably, I discovered their roof, before departing for parts unknown, had dropped massive amounts of fiberglass insulation. This pink material made everything appear to be coated in cotton candy, but the glass fibers within it had ruined most of their furniture and clothing.

My parents had hoped, however, that I might be able to save some of their books and pictures. Unfortunately, every time I tried to remove a photo album from a drawer of a book from a shelf, the non - stop rain wet what I was hying to protect. Between the rain and the glass fibers, it all seemed hopeless.

Trying to fight off hopelessness, I took a minute to stand in what was left of my parents' bedroom. When I looked up through their non-existent proof, I saw gray clouds floating above me, and suddenly everything seemed so strange. Rain coated my upturned face, flooded my eyes, and flowed into my mouth. Overwhelmed, I felt like I was drowning, I needed fresh air, so I ran outside.

Standing on my parents' front yard in the rain, I could breathe better but I still had an overwhelming sense of hopelessness.
