二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   As a saying goes, "Don`t use a lot where a little will do." I recently saw a reality show about helping change struggling restaurants. The premise(前提)is that an expert comes in to help save a family business, and in the process helps the owners rebuild their relationships and their lives. In the beginning, the expert suggested the family reduce their menu from multiple pages to just one. They originally created a massive list of selections because they assumed this created more value. But in many instances, less is more.

This is a big part of the philosophy behind the website—Tiny Buddha. I publish one post from the community every day, which allows me to spend a great deal of time with writers. Traditional wisdom of the web suggests that more content leads to more page views, which eventually creates a successful site. Yet I’ve found the opposite is true.

Having a lower quantity allows more time to focus on quality, and also allows more time for connection through comments. In this way, it’s not about building a large community; it’s about developing and improving an engaged one. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no greater success than that. Regardless of your project or dream, the "less is more" philosophy can go a long way in creating value and enabling progress.

You may not have a large number of hours to commit, but this means you are encouraged to prioritize your goals, and that just may help you focus and become the most effective. You may not have abundant resources, but this means your passion and purpose may be your greatest possession, and there`s no limit to what you can accomplish when you invest yourself in a vision(构想)that moves and inspires you. You may not have countless readers or customers, but this means you can focus on providing excellent service, which can be far more valuable than dozens of cursory(粗略的)connections and standard experiences.

Most importantly, when we focus on doing less and doing it well, instead of doing more and assuming it better,we are less scattered(分散的), more deliberate, less harried, and more attentive. And really, isn’t that what we want? It`s not just the goals and the outcomes we imagine; it’s the happiness and satisfaction we imagine we’ll experience when we get there. It may be the biggest advantage to do less: we create more space to enjoy those things now.

  • 22、People depend on insects to pollinate the plants that make many of the fruits, nuts and vegetables we eat. Past studies had shown urban air pollution might veil the smells insects use to find flowers. Computer models predicted this would cause problems for insects, seeking flowers for a meal. But scientists weren’t sure that would happen in real life.

James Ryalls, a biologist, and his team decided to find out if it would. Working in a field, his group crafted a system made up of large rings. Each area was open, so nearby insects could fly into it. The researchers pumped pollutant gases into these rings. Then during each field season, the scientists recorded how many times pollinators visited the flowers in each ring.

“The results were much more severe than we thought,” Ryalls says. Adding pollution “caused up to 90 percent fewer insects to be able to find the flowers that they need for food,” he says. This was in comparison to the pollutant-free rings. In some cases, only some 30 percent of the pollinating insects even entered the circles with polluted gases.

Counting insects proved easier than getting the pollution into the rings, notes Ryalls. He spent much of his time working on parts of the system that needed fixing. Along the way, gas spills occurred. “By the end of each summer experiment I smelt like a petrol station,” he says. One effect: “Insects now avoid me.”

Later, they counted seed pods on the plants. Overall, only around seven in every 10 flowers had been pollinated. That means there were far fewer seeds in polluted circles. If these were fruit or vegetable plants, there would have been far less food produced.

This study focused on insects finding flowers. But insects also use smells for communication and attracting mates. If air pollution covers those smells too, these tiny animals might face more threats to their survival.

    B.They studied different polluted gases.

C.They drove some insects into the rings.

【3】What is the finding of Ryalls’ experiment?

A.Pollution can result in fewer flowers.

B.Insects are afraid of the rings in the field.

C.Insects struggle to find flowers in polluted air.

D.Plant flowers depend on insects to pollinate.

【4】What is most probably talked about in the next paragraph?

    A.The aim of the study.

    B.Ways to help pollinators.

    C.Insects’ various survival skills.

    D.Insects’ means of communication.

  • 23、   Upright farming is a hugely promising agricultural technique that aims to produce more food to meet the growing population on our limited planet. Techniques include growing in vertical frames (垂向框架) or even in high-rise farms while moving farms into urban areas, and producing nutritious crops without topsoil.

Vertical farmers plant crops in nutrient-rich water, so plants can be raised without soil. They also grow plants using water from fish tanks, or using nutrient water mist systems that reduce water use by more than 90 per cent, which was a technique developed by NASA as a way for astronauts to grow in space and feed themselves without soil while preserving precious water supplies. All of these soil-less growing techniques use less or no chemicals, and recycle water with less waste. Plants can be sown and harvested year-round, free from bad weather conditions such as drought or flooding.

“This is the farming of the future," said Paul Myers, co-founder of vertical farming enterprise Farm Urban. "Chemical-free and moving from the traditional horse and tractor agriculture that is steadily destroying the planet to a more sustainable approach."

The global vertical farming market is expected to be six times bigger in 2026 than it is today. This is fueled in part by rising demand for organic, chemical-free foods, but also by countries looking to increase their food security and cut down on imports — the UK for example uses more than 70 per cent of its land mass for agriculture but imports more than half of its food.

As the vertical farming industry expands, it is worth noting that it has limitations — it only works for some crops, and urban locations can be expensive.

【1】Where will upright farming be popular in the future?

    A.In cities.

    B.In plains.

    C.In deserts.

    D.In the countryside.

【2】What do the techniques mentioned in paragraph 2 have in common?

    A.Waste-free.

    B.Nutrient-rich.

    C.Soil-saving.

    D.Waterproof.

    【3】Why is upright farming promising?

A.The trade routes are not secure.

    B.Organic food is increasingly popular.

    C.The economic benefit is substantial.

    D.Imports are becoming more difficult.

【4】What can be the best title for the text?

A.Upright Farming: How To Save Soil And Water

B.Upright Farming: What To Plant In The New Way

    C.Vertical Farming: Raising Agriculture’s Potential

    D.Vertical Farming: Lowering Environmental Impact

  • 24、   Since we are social beingsthe quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships.

One strength of the human condition is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties.

Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily difficulties. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over a range of illnessesfrom depression to heart diseaseshow that the presence of social support helps people protect themselves from illnessand the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. Firstfriendsrelativesand co-workers may let us know that they value us. Our self-respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties.

Secondother people often provide us with informational support. They help us to explain and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Thirdwe typically find social companionship supportive. Engaging in leisure-time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting(转移……注意力)us from our worries and troubles. Finallyother people may give us instrumental support-financial aidmaterial resourcesand needed services-that reduces stress by helping us solve and deal with our problems.

1Research shows that people's physical and mental health has much to do with ______ .

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

I was born into a big family. As the fifth of seven children, I went to the same public school as my three older sisters and brother. Every year, my mother went to the same scene and had parent/child interviews with the same teachers. The only thing different was the child. And every child participated in an old school tradition — the annual plant sale held in early May, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Third grade was the first time that I was allowed to take part in the plant sale. I wanted to surprise my mother, but I didn’t have any money. I went to my oldest sister and shared the secret, and she gave me some money. When I arrived at the plant sale, I carefully made my selection and spent a long time inspecting each plant to ensure that I had indeed found the best geranium (天竺葵). Once I had taken it secretly home, with the help of my sister, I hid it in the attic (阁楼). I was very nervous for fear that my mother would find it before Mother’s Day, but my sister assured me that she wouldn’t, and indeed she did not.

When Mother’s Day arrived, I got up very early, went into the attic on tiptoe and carried the carefully-selected geranium to the kitchen, where my mother was preparing breakfast. “It’s for you!” I gave the flower to mum and hugged her tightly.

The year I was fifteen, my younger sister reached third grade. In early May she came to me full of wonder and secrecy and told me that there was going to be a plant sale at school, and she wanted to surprise our mother. As my older sister did for me, I gave her some money and off she went.
