  • 22、Our Planet Earth is full of life and has incredible biodiversity. Biological Diversity or Biodiversity is the base of human existence and fundamental to its well-being. Species are the building blocks of this life on Earth, and it is believed that the species that are at present globally found have continuously evolved over 65 million years since the Last Mass Extinction. However, the nature and extent of our planet’s biodiversity at all levels have not been completely evaluated yet. Thus, the exact number of species found in the world remains unknown. Over the years, with the advancement of scientific knowledge and the discovery of more new species, it has been approximated that there are, at present, 10 million to 14 million species on Earth, of which 1. 2 million species have been data-based. This means that still more than 86% of the terrestrial(陆生的) and 91% of the marine species remain unknown.

Every year, taxonomists(分类学家)describe thousands of species, some of which are completely new to science, while in some cases, the species and subspecies are closely examined and determined whether they can be considered distinct species.

A study has revealed that over 99. 9% of all species amounting to more than 5 billion species that ever lived here, are believed to be extinct. At present, our planet houses millions of species, among which 86% live on land, 13% in the deep subsurface, and a mere 1% in the oceans. However, Biodiversity is not evenly distributed on Earth, and its number varies greatly on different continents.

The undiscovered and misidentified species slow our ability to understand patterns and changes in global biodiversity and the rate of species extinctions(灭绝). Even after several years of taxonomic studies, only 14% of terrestrial species and 9% of marine species have been officially added to the central database. Necessarily, some species will become extinct before researchers realize they ever existed.

【1】What does the underlined word “marine” mean in Paragraph 1?

    A.Rare.

    B.Oceanic.

    C.Endangered.

    D.Novel.

    【2】What do taxonomists usually do?

    A.Examine distribution of species.

    B.Compare species from subspecies.

C.Decide the situation of the species.

    D.Describe diversity of new-found species.

【3】Which of the following can describe the distribution of the Earth’s Biodiversity?

    A.Unequal.

    B.Accumulative.

    C.Average.

    D.Maximum.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The central database covers all species.

B.The rate of species extinctions is rather high.

C.Many undiscovered species have been extinct.

D.Humans know little about endangered species.

  • 23、   We all go through times when we feel we are not good enough. We might feel that way at work or in school or even as a parent. Here are some things to remember when you feel like that.

1 When I started my Ph.D. program, I felt like the dumbest person in every class. I couldn’t believe how many smart people were there. I didn’t know if I could measure up to their intelligence or compete in the same league with them. Years later, I found out that almost everyone felt this way, too.

You are unique and have special talents. If you can barely make Hamburger Helper, don’t compare yourself to your sister who is a chef(厨师). I’m sure you can do many things that she can’t. 2 You are you. You are not your sister.

You need to stop chasing perfection. It doesn’t exist. What’s perfect to me is not perfect to you. So if you think that there is some objective measurement of perfection and that the rest of the world is judging you against, then you are wrong. 3

4 Our sense of self-worth is based in our thoughts. We have been programmed for many years with thoughts about ourselves. Messages come from our parents, our peers, teachers, the media and our own labels. But guess what? They are only thoughts. Just because you think these thoughts, it doesn’t make them true. 5

    A. You need to change your thought patterns.

    B. So focus on your own passions and talents.

    C. You have the power to change your future.

    D. You are not the only one who feels this way.

    E. If you love yourself for who you are, other people will notice.

    F. One of my favorite sayings is, "Don’t believe a negative thought you think!"

    G. Most people are too worried about their own lack of perfection to judge you.

  • 24、Exchange a glance with someone, and then look away. Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer and you have made a different situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person’s stare without being friendly, rude, or aggressive. If you are on a lift, what stare-time are you permitted? To answer this question, consider what you typically do. You very likely give other passengers a quick glance to size them up and to assure them that you mean no harm. Since being close to another person signals the possibility of interaction, you need to send out a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact----what sociologist Erving Goffiman calls a dimming(变暗) of the lights. You look down at the floor, at the indicator(指示) lights, anywhere but into another passenger’s eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on a lift, you will make the other person extremely uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself.

If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance, a man and a woman communicate interest in this manner. They stare at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, and then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals, “I know you”, “I am interested in you” or “You look peculiar(奇怪) and I am curious about you”. This type of stare often produces hostile(敌意的) feelings.

【1】 If one is looked at by a stranger for too long, he tends to feel ________.

    A. depressed   B. uneasy

    C. curious D. amused

【2】 If you want to be left alone on a lift, the best thing to do is _____.

    A. to look into another passenger’s eyes

    B. to avoid eye contact with other passengers

    C. to signal you don’t mean to do harm to anyone

    D. to keep a distance from other passengers

【3】It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ________.

    A. every glance has its significance

    B. staring at a person is an expression of interest

    C. a stare longer than 3 seconds is unacceptable

    D. a glance conveys more meaning than words
