二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Earlier this month, two rock climbers achieved what many thought impossible: They climbed up the 3,000-foot-high Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park without specialized equipment. Climbing without this equipment is called“free-climbing.”Until now, no one had free-climbed to the top of the rock face, which is a part of the mountain EI Capitan.

El Capitan, which means“the captain”or“the chief”in Spanish, has always presented a challenge to climbers. But the Dawn Wall, on the mountains southeast face, is a particularly difficult route to the summit (顶峰). It is a rock formation that is both steep and relatively smooth. This makes free-climbing the rock face seem almost impossible.

About seven years ago, professional climber Tommy Caldwell spotted a possible route up the wall. It took years of planning and preparation, but this month, Caldwell, 36, and his friend Kevin Jorgeson, 30, finally make the climb.

Free climbers do use ropes and other basic safety equipment to catch them if they fall and Caldwell and Jorgeson fell often. Before starting their climb, they broke down their route into 32 sections. Each section was based on a rope length called a“pitch.”The rope was secured into the rock face to catch the climbers if they fell.

Caldwell and Jorgesons goal was to climb the Dawn Wall without returning to the ground. If they fell, they had to start that pitch all over again. The two men started climbing on December 27. They slept in hanging tents, and a team of friends brought them food each day.

The men had spent years rehearsing (排练) the movements it would take to get through each pitch. They made it through the fist half of the climb relatively easily. But halfway up, Jorgeson ran into trouble. In one difficult spot, he fell each time he attempted to climb. After 10 days of trying, Jorgeson finally made it to the next pitch.

Getting through that troublesome pitch gave both climbers renewed energy. They finished the rest of the climb five days later, on January 14.

  • 22、   Festivals are about fun in large helpings(一份食物), and science festivals should be no exception There should be plenty of it at the second Edinburgh Science Festival, which runs from 2 April to 16 April, But there really does seem to be something to cater for all tastes in the impressive listing of more than 300 events.

For starters, what about a tour of tropical crops in the Botanical Gardens- tastes and smells included? You can follow that up with a course of lectures and tastings of Italian food and wine given by the finest Italian delicatessen(熟食) in the country. Well, it is all in Edinburgh, but room is unavailable here to list the entire programme: including the daily diary and A map of venues. It covers 20 pages! There is also a host of specialist conferences on a range of topics including statistics, computing and urban planning. The idea seems to be to make Edinburgh a focus of science at all levels during the festival.

The programme of the festival is well arranged and subdivided, making it easy to pick out interesting events to suit your tastes, whatever they may be. • 23、Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog’s life, describes a person who has an unhappy life.

Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.

Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.

Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. But mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.

Dog expressions also are used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.

【1】What does the passage mainly discuss?

    A. Dogs in our daily lives

    B. Expressions with dogs

    C. The role dogs take in America

    D. Attitude of the American citizens to dogs

【2】What does dog-tired describe in the passage?

    A. Describe a very successful person.

    B. Describe the dogs are very tired after a long walk.

    C. Describe a rainy and cloudy weather.

    D. Describe the heavy degree of exhaustion of people after long time work.

【3】How are people compared to dogs in bad ways?

    A. By mean dogs and junkyard dogs.

    B. By lazy dogs and bad dogs.

    C. By sick dogs and tired dogs.

    D. None of them is right.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

A.Everyone can be successful if he learns from the old.

B.It might be difficult for the young to learn new skills.

C.Junkyard dogs are careful in money arrangement.

D.Fierce persons arent so awful as their appearance sometimes.

  • 24、Recently, more than 1,000 researchers and executives signed an open letter calling for a pause in research on artificial intelligence. The letter warns that AI may threaten jobs, spread propaganda (宣传), and even lead to the “loss of control of our civilization”.

Many of the signatories (签署者) are thoughtful and experienced AI practitioners. Their concerns should be taken seriously. On balance, though, their approach is likely to evolve into an opposition to progress.

Consider the broader worldview expressed in this document. It said, “Powerful AI systems should be developed only once we are confident that their effects will be positive and risks manageable. ” This is a formula for complete stop, as no one can ever be so confident. The history of innovation is one of trial and error, risk and reward. One reason why the US leads the world in digital technology is that it did not constrain the industry with well-meaning but doubtful regulation. Slowing AI progress, moreover, carries risks all its own. Don’t forget that this technology is likely to make the world richer, healthier, smarter and more productive for decades to come. By 2030, it might be contributing more than $15 trillion to the global economy. Advances in medicine, biology, climate science, education, manufacturing, transportation and much more are on the horizon. Any new rules must be balanced against the vast potential of these efforts.

Nor is AI research advancing into a void (空白领域). The industry already operates within legal parameters (范畴) in response to potential harms. Companies have ensured their products are safe. Trade associations are developing codes of conduct and ethical frameworks. Far from the “out-of-control race”, the AI business is constrained by law and politics and consumer sentiment.

It’s natural to worry about new technologies. But the wealth and abundance of American society is due in no small part to risks taken in the past, in a spirit of openness and optimism. The AI revolution deserves no less.

【1】Why did the researchers and executives sign the open letter?

A.Because the research on AI had been paused.

B.Because AI had uncontrollably destroyed human civilization.

C.Because they were worried about the potential risks of AI.

D.Because they were more experienced than others in AI field.

【2】Why is the US mentioned in paragraph 3?

A.To support that innovation comes from taking risks.

B.To stress that the US is very important in the digital field.

C.To draw attention to the benefits of well-meaning regulations.

D.To reveal those people’s real purpose of signing the letter.

【3】What can we infer from this passage?

A.AI technology consumes more money than it can earn.

B.Society will hugely benefit from AI technology in the future.

C.The AI industry is now developing without any restrictions.

D.The development of AI technology is just a solo effort.

【4】What’s the writer’s attitude towards AI revolution?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Neutral.

    D.Indifferent.

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、During my first improv (即兴表演)class, I learned a core concept of improv: “yes, and.” It means that, as improvisers, we accept what fellow performers say. If someone says that zebras are librarians, for example, then zebras are librarians. We do not _________ the logic. we say “yes” and continue with the scene as if nothing is wrong.

To do this _________, our teacher warned us that we’d have to avoid second-guessing ourselves. Sometimes scenes go in unexpected directions. The best improv_________ when performers stay open to different possibilities and say whatever pops into their minds.

I got a taste of how _________ that is when acting out my first scene. My classmate turned to me and said, “Mom is going to be so mad.” Mad about what? My mind spun out ideas, and my inner critic shot them all down. We broke the car? No, that’s too easy. We failed a test? No, you don’t want your classmates thinking you’re stupid on the first day. I finally _________ an answer: “Yes, we’re going to be late for dinner.” The scene proceeded from there, and we eventually finished as two sisters who lost their way on a hiking trip.

The first few scenes were hard, but as weeks turned into months, I became more comfortable thinking on my feet. I never _________ my inner critic entirely, but over time, I didn’t police my words with quite so much vigor. I also became better at _________, relating to my conversation partners, and communicating clearly in the moment.

The training came in handy 6 months ago, when I was giving a seminar(研讨课)about my science. An audience member surprised me with a question that didn’t _________ the information I’d presented. Instead of getting annoyed, I _________ the “yes, and” approach — accepting the question at face value and letting my mind focus on why it was asked. That helped me find an appropriate answer.

The benefits of improv go beyond __________. Early on in graduation school, I would get stuck when I got unexpected data in my experiments; my inner critic would assume I had made a mistake. But now, after accepting the “yes, and” concept,I no longer go into an experiment thinking that I already __________ the story my data are going to tell.

Last year, I used that approach after encountering confusing data. Instead of getting __________, I kept exploring the data and ended up identifying a new type of cell. If I hadn’t stayed open to the possibility that the results were __________, I would have missed out on the most exciting finding of my PhD. so far.

All scientists can benefit from this lesson. If the data say zebras are librarians, then it’s worth investigating whether zebras are, __________, librarians. Our job as scientists isn’t to get data that __________ a pre-understood story. Our job is to say “yes, and”.
