  • 21、   A Chicago woman, Karen Autenrieth, who lost her wedding band nearly 50 years ago was reunited with the ring just in time for Valentine’s Day.

The story began during the winter of 1973. “It was very cold and the snow piled up along the roads,” Karen told the Chicago Tribune. “I had to help each kid climb over the large piles to get into my grandparents' yard. My hands were cold---I didn't have gloves on---and my ring just flew into the snow.” Despite her best efforts, Karen was unable to find the ring.

In February, a Chicago man who lost his own wedding ring posted on Facebook asking if anyone had found it. In the comments section, Sarah Batka, a woman who lives in Autenrieth's grandparents' former home% said she had discovered a wedding ring eight years ago while gardening. It wasn't the man s ring» but it sparked a hunt for the rightful owner.

Two historians---Carol Flynn and Linda Lamberty from the Historical Society---set off to solve the mystery. They used every means to retrace the origin of the ring and finally drew a conclusion that a woman, Karen Autenrieth, whose grandparents had once lived in Batka’s home, was the possible owner.

“The woman was on Facebook. So I asked whether this ring was hers. ’’ Flynn wrote in the post. “She replied—it was hers!”

After connecting, Flynn mailed the ring to Autenrieth, who received the package on Valentine's Day. 44Holy Mary, I can t believe it. Karen told the Chicago Tribune. “Just think I get the ring back after almost 50 years!

  • 22、   Vegetable gardens may not be as visually pleasing as the variety of flowers, but Floridians looking to save some green by growing their own salad fixings can soon do so without fear. Gov. Ron DeSantis this week signed a law that bans local governments from carrying orders against homeowners from raising veggies in their yards.

The law, which takes effect July 1, puts an end to that particular power of towns and cities across the state to prohibit vegetable gardens for “aesthetic(审美的)purposes”.

The issue became a cause after a couple living in Miami Shores Village opposed the decision of a $ 50 a day fine for growing vegetables in their front yard, as they’d done for years.

Hermine Ricketts and her husband Tom Carroll fought City Hall in a case that wound its way up the state’s court system, with judges consistently ruling against their money-saving and health-conscious project.

After the Florida Supreme Court ruled in favor of Miami Shores’ right to control design and landscaping standards, the couple replaced their vegetables with pink flamingos (红鹳花) .

Their cause was not lost, however. State lawmakers proposed and passed a law that effectively voids the court rulings, with Rob Bradley, who sponsored the bill, reportedly calling the village’s action a “vast overreach”.

The lawmaker noted the difficulty that many families experience getting fresh and affordable food, calling bans against vegetable and fruit gardens ridiculous.

About a third of all households in the U. S. grow some of their own food, according to the National Gardening Association. The group says a 600-square-foot garden that costs around $ 70 a year to keep can grow 300 pounds of fresh produce worth about $ 600 annually.

1Why will some Floridians plant salad fixings?

A.To protect the environment. B.To beautify their home.

C.To build their own gardens. D.To cut daily expenses.

2What can be known about the couple from the passage?

    A.They started a public health-conscious campaign.

B.They never gave in to the Miami Shores’ demand .

C.They were fined $50 a day by Miami Shores Village.

D.They were not backed by the Florida Supreme Court.

3What does the underlined word “voids” in paragraph 6 mean?

    A.Hides. B.Cancels.

    C.Prevents. D.Values.

4What does Rob Bradley think of the couple’s action probably?

    A.It’s sensible. B.It’s ridiculous.

    C.It’s ambitious. D.It’s costly.

  • 23、According to US national park researchers, microplastic particles (微粒) equal to as many as 300 million plastic water bottles are raining down on the Grand Canyon.

In a survey of 11 remote western places, also including the Great Basin and Craters of the Moon national parks, researchers discovered more than 1000 tons of microplastic particles that had traveled through the atmosphere via rain or water particles.

Most microplastics are from larger pieces of plastic. Since plastics don’t degrade (降解), plastics that end up in waste piles or landfills break down into microparticles and make their way through the Earth’s atmosphere, soil and water systemics.

Janice Brahney, lead researcher at Utah State University, said, “Plastics could be deposited (沉降), readmitted to the atmosphere again, transported for some time…who knows how many times, and who knows how far they’ve traveled?”

Brahney’s team found that so-called wet microplastics, named for the way they are transported, are most likely disturbed by a storm and swept up into the atmosphere, having originated in larger urban areas. By comparison, the spreading patterns of dry microplastics is the same as dust and can travel long distances, often across continents.

Brahney warned that new findings show an urgent need to reduce plastic pollution. Although their full effects on the human body are still unknown, scientists are starting to raise public health concerns over microplastic particles: They’re small enough to stay in lung tissue, causing damage and, in some cases of routine exposure, can lead to asthma and cancer.

Scientists have also found that microplastic particles affect the temperature adjustment function of the soil, leading to losses in plant life.

Brahney believes that her research is just the beginning of understanding how microplastics move through ecosystems.

“Learning about plastics and how they don’t degrade seems like, ‘Oh my God, we should have been expecting this: they’ re just made into these tiny sizes, they could certainly be carried by the wind,” Brahney said.

“We’ve just been missing it,” she added.

【1】The direct cause of the microplastic rain is that_________.

A.small pieces from plastics become degradable

B.microplastic particles travel into the atmosphere

C.plastic particles end up in waste piles or landfills

D.plastic water bottles are transported to the water systems

【2】What did Janice Brahney and her team find out?

    A.The structure of microplastic particles.

B.The distance that microplastics can travel.

C.The way that microplastics are transported.

D.The different types of microplastic particles.

【3】What does the author mainly want to tell us with the text?

    A.Microplastics have affected the ecosystem.

B.Plastic particles have serious effects on human health.

C.Methods to degrade plastics could be developed soon.

D.Researchers have missed the best time to study plastics.

【4】What’s the attitude of Brahney towards the microplastic move according to the last two paragraphs?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Uncaring.

    C.Doubtful.

    D.Worried.

  • 24、“I’m not a reader.” It’s a common reply that Julia Torres, a teacher-librarian in Denver Public School, has heard throughout her 16-year career, She’s seen students tear up books, throw them away or check them out only to immediately return them all because they didn’t have confidence in their ability to read.

As a librarian, Torres feels strongly that libraries should be spaces of liberation, places where students can develop a love of reading at any stage. Reading is a skill that everyone can grow to love, but too many negative experiences during a child's literacy (读写能力)education can result in boredom, lack of interest or even anger. When a student has a poor experience like being shamed for their reading choices, they can begin to associate reading with painful feelings of insecurity, shame and stress.

To prevent reading disorder (阅读障碍)practices, as Torres notes, librarians first can build an inclusive (内容丰富的)library where classified collections can make it easier for students to find out the books they want and also help identify gaps in the collections. Reevaluating librarians, role is necessary, which allows students to take control of the library and have a say in what’s purchased for the collection, directly exciting students’ reading interest. Instead of hosting traditional book fairs where students have to pay for books, it is better to open up a True Book Fair, where students are invited to choose books intentionally to their interests without any costs. Librarians are recommended to read what students are reading. Another two important approaches to preventing reading disorder are to take a look at the library policies and redefine what counts as reading. It is necessary to get rid of fines, checkout limits, security gates, and punishment policies. Plus, students are encouraged to listen to audiobooks or read picture books. Find a way to teach important skills like comprehension or critical thinking with the texts that excite and interest students.

【1】What can be inferred from the underlined sentence “I’m not a reader”?

A.Some students have no ability to read.

B.Some students show little interest in reading.

C.Some students don't borrow books from the library.

D.Some students fail to read beyond the lines.

【2】What is directly linked with exciting students’ reading interests?

    A.Getting rid of library rules.

    B.Voicing their own choices.

    C.Librarians’ recommendation.

    D.Reducing charges caused by reading.

【3】What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?

A.To do a research on reading disorder.

B.To analyze why reading disorder forms.       .

C.Tb offer librarians suggestions on book choice.

D.To draw attention to reading disorder prevention.
