21、 In the time of weak job and housing markers. Consumers are saving less than they have in decades and industry professionals expect that trend to continue. Consumers saved 6.4 percent of their after-tax in-come in June. Before the recession, the rate was 1 to 2 percent for many years. In June, consumer spending and personal incomes were essentially flat compared with May, suggesting that the American economy, as dependent as it is on shoppers opening their wallets and purses, isn't likely to rebound anytime soon.
On the bright side, the practices that consumers have adopted in response to the economic crisis ultimately could make them happier. New studies of consumption and happiness show, for instance, that people are happier when they spend money on experiences instead of material objects, when they relish what they plan to buy long before they buy it, and when they stop trying to outdo the Joneses.
If consumers end up sticking with their newfound spending habits, some tactics(策略) that retailers and marketers began using during the recession could become lasting business strategies. Among those strategies are offering goods that makes being at home more entertaining and trying to make consumers feel special by giving them access to exclusive events and more personal customer service.
While the current round of stinginess may simply be a response to the economic downturn, some analysts say consumers may also be permanently adjusting their spending based on what they've discovered about what truly makes them happy or fulfilled.
“This actually is a topic that hasn't been researched very much until recently,” says Elizabeth W. Dunn, an associate professor in the psychology department at the University of British Columbia, who is at the forefront of research on consumption and happiness. There's massive literature on in come and happiness. It's amazing how little there is on how to spend your money.
Studies over the last few decades have shown that money, up to a certain point, makes people happier because it lets them meet basic needs. The latest round of research is. for lack of a better term, all about emotional efficiency: how to reap the most happiness for your dollar.
So just where does happiness reside for consumers? Scholars and researchers haven't determined whether Armani will put a bigger smile on your face than Dolce & Gabbana. But they have found that our types of purchases, their size and frequency, and even the timing of the spending all affect long-term happiness.
One major finding is that spending money for an experience - concert tickets, French less orris, sushi-rolling classes, a hotel room in Monaco - produces longer-lasting satisfaction than spending money on plain old stuff.
“It’s better to go on a vacation than buy a new couch is basically the idea,” says Professor Dunn.
Thomas DeLeire, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin discovered that the only category to be positively related to happiness was leisure: vacations, entertainment, sports and equipment like golf clubs and fishing poles.

22、Hidden beneath the surface in the roots of Earths astonishing and diverse plant life, there exists a biological superhighway linking together the members of the plant kingdom in what researchers call the "wood wide web".
The network is comprised of thin threads of fungus (真菌) that grow outwards underground up to a few meters from its partnering plant, meaning that all of the plant life within a region likely connected to one another. The partnership is beneficial for both parties involved, plants provide carbohydrates (碳水化合物) to the funguses and in exchange, the funguses aid in gathering water and providing nutrients to its partnering plant.
A study conducted by Rensen Zeng of the South China Agricultural University found that this also allowed for plants to warn one another of potential harm. The study showed Broad Beans used the fungal network to spy on one another for upcoming danger.
Like our Internet, this fungal connectivity is also full of crime. Some plants, such as Golden Marigolds have been found to release poisons into the network to slow down the growth of surrounding plants in the fight for water and light. Other plants, such as the Phantom Orchid, do not have the chlorophyll (叶绿素) and must get the necessary nutrients from surrounding plants.
Research suggests that animals such as insects and worms may be able to detect slight exchanges of nutrients through the network, allowing them to more easily find delicious roots to feed on; however, this has not been conclusively made clear in experimentation. The more we learn about this phenomenon, the more our understanding of the plant life of our planet will continue to change. Perhaps one day, we may be able to map out these complex networks entirely.

23、Bad drivers in the District could soon get a serious warning sent straight to their cell phones. The city is working to identify drivers with a history of traffic violations, such as speeding and driving through a red light, to send messages warning them of their history of infraction(违规) as well as their risks of getting into a fatal crash.
City officials say they hope the pointed messages(定制信息) will decrease dangerous road behaviors. “We know that there is a number of drivers that are putting others at serious risk with excessive speeding and red-light running,” said Jeff Marootian, director of the city's Department of Transportation, one of the agencies leading the effort. “We're hoping that this creative approach can ultimately reduce serious injury and fatality crashes.”
“This is a creative approach that we haven't tried before, and we think that it is worth the effort,” Marootian said. The concept, which D.C. officials say is a first among cities nationwide, is the latest effort to target dangerous drivers in a city where serious and fatal crashes are on the rise. City leaders said evidence shows drivers with multiple traffic violations are more likely to be involved in crashes.
Researchers have studied the relationship between repeat traffic offenders and serious collisions, with some data suggesting a strong connection between the two. But some researchers also have pointed to other factors at play, such as the amount of time the driver spends on the road and exposure to traffic enforcement(强制性)systems.
A team from The Lab led by Muriel E. Bowser, is examining data from the District's automated traffic enforcement program to predict a driver's likelihood of being involved in a serious crash. It will create a campaign that could include text messages and mail sent to a sample of high-risk drivers. “We will evaluate whether drivers who receive these messages have fewer red-light violations, speeding violations, and ultimately, crashes, compared to the group of high-risk drivers who do not receive the messages,” according to The Lab.
The program is among the latest road-safety measures with the purpose of cutting the growing number of traffic injuries and fatalities. Although the new messages appear as a warning to higher-risk drivers, city officials said the intention is to educate the recipient, Marootian said there is no violation or fine attached to the message and that the campaign is to use data to directly communicate with individual drivers. Some questioned whether the message will work.
【1】What do we know about the approach to sending pointed messages?
A.It may put the drivers at serious risk of crashing.
B.It can identify drivers with records of traffic accidents.

A.By sending messages to the drivers.
B.By comparing the impact of the approach on two groups.
C.By predicting the possibility of a driver's involvement in a crash.
D.By checking the response of the receivers who get the messages.
【4】What is the text mainly about?

24、 Holidays can be enjoyable and relaxing. But sometimes a holiday can change your life completely, which is what happened two years ago to Victoria Smith and Sally Gook.
Victoria Smith, six years ago, was working as a manager at Next, a British chain store. Then she went on holiday to Borneo. “It was a working holiday,” said Victoria, “where you could study the orang-utan in the wild — I have always been interested in apes, so I thought it would be fun. ” The holiday was wonderful, and when Victoria came home she found it very difficult to return to her old life. Although everybody told her she was mad, she decided to go back to university and study biology. Four years later she became a chimpanzee keeper.
For the last two years Victoria has been working at Monkey World, a centre in southwest England that looks after apes which used to be ill-treated. She works long hours, and the pay isn’t very good, but she loves it. “I’m really happy now. Since I started working here I feel that I’ve been doing something important, not just wasting my life.”
Sally Gook wakes up every morning to a deep blue sky and blazing sun. For the last two years she has been living on the tiny Greek island of Lipsi, which is only 16 square kilometers in size and has a population of just 650.
But until a few years ago she lived in London. “I was working for American Express and I had a good social life and earned a lot of money. But I had to get up very early every morning, often in horrible weather, and got a train and the tube to work.”
Then one day she and a friend decided they needed a relaxing holiday, and they came to Lipsi. “I loved it — the people, the mountains, the sun, and the delicious food. Suddenly I knew there was a different life waiting for me here.” A few months later she applied for a job at the travel company which had organized her holiday.
