21、 An Edinburgh inventor has created a fully biodegradable bottle that is made from paper and a secret combination of plant materials, and it could help save the planet's oceans from plastic pollution and can also be eaten by sea creatures.
The Edinburgh-based Durham University chemistry graduate James Longcroft started a non-profit bottled water company two years ago. He wanted to put all his profits into a charity that provided clean drinking water to countries in Africa.
However, after concerns about the environmental impact of plastic bottles, Mr. Longcroft decided the Edinburgh and London-based company, Choose Water, should go plastic-free. So he came up with a new type of water bottle—a waterproof paper bottle.
“The outside is made from recycled paper, but the inside has to be waterproof, and provides strength so the bottle would keep its structure, and keep the water fresh,” Mr. Longcroft said.
When the bottle is thrown in the ocean the degrading process begins within hours leaving the bottle totally degraded (分解)within weeks. The steel cap breaks down within a year.
Mr. Longcroft now believes these novel bottles could revolutionise the industry and says the cost of producing the bottle is around 5 pence more than one made from single-use plastic.
“The main difficulty we face is breaking into a saturated (饱和的)market and competing with an old industry,” he said. “Changing an industry will be a big uphill battle, but with the support from the public, we will change the way we look at bottled water.”
Researchers warn that eight million tonnes of plastics currently find their way into the ocean every year which will stay in the environment for centuries.
“We really want to get our bottles on shelves and into people's hands as soon as possible—if we can stop even one plastic bottle ending up in the environment it will be worth it,” said Mr Longcroft.

A.They face stiff competition to enter market.
B.They are more costly than plastic ones.
C.They still lack in the public support.
D.They take a long time to break down.
【4】What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to?

D.Getting people to accept the new bottles.
22、 “I have slept on the Embankment (路堤),” wrote George Orwell in 1933, adding that, despite the noise and the wet and the cold, it was “much better than not sleeping at all”. Nine decades on and Charing Cross and the Embankment are once again full of rough sleepers, even during the coldest days of December. It is a pattern found in much of the rich world.
However, it does not have to be this way. In post-war America, there was little rough sleeping, and homelessness was falling so fast that sociologists predicted it would soon disappear. Even today, some rich, successful cities, including Tokyo and Munich, have few people living on the streets.
These places offer lessons on how to reduce homelessness. One is that tough love can sometimes work. Conservatives argue that softer policing policies in the 1970s, including careless attitudes to public drunkenness, were in part responsible for the rise in homelessness. The world could learn something from Greece, where strong family networks ensure that those down on their luck find someone to take them in. Many experts argue that it is counterproductive (事与愿违的) to give money to someone begging on the street. Better, they say, to donate to a charity.
Yet, most people believe tougher policies will ultimately do little if housing costs remain high. This is the underlying reason for rising homelessness. So, the state can do something to help. For example, more generous rent allowance might actually save governments money in the medium term—after all, demands on health-care services and the police would decline. Another option is for the state to build more housing itself. In Singapore, a place where there is practically no homelessness, 80% of residents live in government-built flats which they buy at knock-down prices.
The most effective reform, however, would be to make building more homes easier. The problem of rough sleeping in Germany and Switzerland, two countries with minimal real-house-price growth in recent decades, is less acute. Japan has used its fair share of strong-arm policies to deal with the homeless, but then it introduced a big urban reform in the early 2000s.

A.To show the rich life in Charing Cross.
B.In memory of the world-famous writer.
C.To show the condition of rough sleepers.
D.To introduce the topic of homelessness.

23、 The seven teenagers hurried towards the airport gate. Italy's national under-16 swimming championship was taking place in Genoa and the boys were going to compete there. 14-year-old Marco Sulis looked around for his teammates. Their coach sat near them. While preparing for take-off, the flight attendant began her routine safety briefing. Most of the passengers idled away the time engaging in chatting and eating. Although air crashes are alien to Marco, he, who perceived how vital the process was, would later remember all her words.
During the flight, as earlier instructed, he located the nearest emergency exit and made a mental note of the red handle behind a protective plastic shield. To open the door, one had to remove the plastic and pull the handle.
Located by mountains to the north, the airport is often beaten by strong winds. Flight 1553 was a short one. The sky that day was crystalline blue and visibility was perfect.
At two minutes to touchdown, the plane rocked, which was later found to be out of mechanical faults. Soon, it touched down unstably on two wheels. The captain attempted to reduce the airplane's speed by braking hard but it was no use. Slipping sideways, the plane rushed out into the sea at high speed.
Tons of water poured into the cabin. Passengers were shouting and rushing towards the emergency exit door. Marco watched people struggle with the door fruitlessly.
“Let me do it!” Marco yelled, leaping out of his seat.
Marco smashed the clear plastic with the palm of his hand. He grabbed the handle and pulled, using all the strength in his body. The emergency exit door finally swung open. However, the emergency door pinned Marco's leg down. Passengers passed Marco as they rushed out of the plane. Already soaking in water, Marco knew there was no time to waste. He pushed against the door as hard as he could and managed to free his leg. Marco exited from the plane finally and saw his coach and teammates bobbing in the waves. He began swimming towards the concrete pier(码头).The others followed.
When they reached the pier, they were safe at last. Even though four people were killed in the accident, many more survived because of Marco. Marco just simply said, “All I did was to watch safety briefing.
【1】What drove Marco to remember the safety briefing?
A.His previous experience of an air accident.

C.His realization of the importance.
D.The coach's compulsory requirement.
【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

C.The plane went wrong above in the sky because of the force of wind.
D.The pilot finally managed to slow down the plane with a timely brake.
【3】Why didn't Marco leave the plane as soon as the exit door was opened?
A.Because he was blocked by other passengers.
B.Because one part of his body was stuck tight.
C.Because he was looking for his companions.
D.Because he was scared of the sea water outside.
【4】Which of the following can best describe Marco?
A.Persistent and hardworking.
B.Ambitious and skillful.
C.Creative and considerate.
D.Alert and decisive.
24、 Every two or three months, Thyago Ohana goes out on the busy streets of Vienna with a sign saying “Free Hugs”. The handsome 32-year-old Brazilian, who works in international trade at India’s Vienna embassy, chooses a popular site, like the historic shopping street, Kaemtner Strasse. There he opens his arms to anyone who wants a hearty embrace (拥抱).
He does it because back in 2012, when he was feeling very stressed and anxious during a visit to Paris, a stranger gave him a free hug. He’s never forgotten how it filled him with unexpected calm and joy.
For those who take up his offer, the hug makes them laugh and smile. But sometimes it does more, as when an elderly woman in a tour group stopped and watched him. The group moved on, but she remained and asked, “Can I have a hug?” “Of course you can!” said Thyago who wrapped his arms round her. When they broke their embrace, she kept holding onto his shoulders and looked into his eyes. “Thank you,” she said. “I can’t remember the last time I was hugged this way.”
It’s a memory that still makes Thyago emotional. “It was a really powerful moment of human connection. It’s why I keep doing it.”
Of our live senses, our sense of touch is the one that is most easily taken for granted. “A child can be born blind or deaf and they will grow up just fine,” says David J Linden, author of Touch. The Science of Hand, Heart and Mind. “Yet if a baby is lacking in loving social touch for the first two years of life, then all sorts of disasters unfold.” That’s one reason why when babies are born, they are now usually placed on their mother’s skin.
Linden says however you do it, “maximizing touch in your life is a good thing”— whether holding hands, petting a dog, going to the hairdresser, hugging our kids, our partners or even a stranger.
