21、Geographers are interested in the spatial patterns observed on earth. Bridging the natural and social sciences, Geography is the interdisciplinary study of environments and how people interact with the environment. It is important to study geography because many of the world's problems require understanding the interdependence between human activities and the environment. Geography is therefore a beneficial major for students because its theories and methods provide them with analytical skills relevant to occupations focused on solving social and environmental problems. The Department of Geography offers eight majors that help students tailor their focus of study.
The Geography—Globalization and Development major will provide students with a sophisticated understanding of contemporary global issues and a geographical framework for analyzing key issues involved in national and international development. Reflecting the discipline of geography as a whole, this major emphasizes an integrated approach to studying the relationship of global change to individual and community well-being by combining the benefits of area studies with theoretical and topical investigations in the curriculum.
Our department is committed to excellence in both teaching and advising. Several of our faculty members have received teaching awards, and we are known across campus for the quality of our advising. As a geography major, you will meet one-on-one with your faculty advisor every semester during advising week, and you are always welcome to talk with your advisor at any time throughout the semester whenever questions may arise. In addition to advising our students about their academic programs, we provide timely information about internships, nationally competitive awards, and other opportunities as they arise. Many of our students complete internships and several of our students over the last few years have received nationally competitive awards.

Opportunities Upon Graduation
With a liberal arts degree in Geography—Globalization and Development, students are prepared for employment in a variety of fields, including non-profit and government work, particularly in the areas of community and international development. This degree will also prepare students well to work in the private sector in an international context. Graduates from this program will also be well situated to continue on to graduate school or law school, with research and professional interest in academic fields, including, but not limited to, geography, public affairs and policy, development studies, and community and regional planning.

22、In some ways, learning to programme a computer is similar to learning a new language. It requires learning new symbols and terms, which must be organized correctly to instruct the computer what to do. The computer code must also be clear enough that other programmers can read and understand it.
In spite of those similarities, MIT neuroscientists (神经科学家) have found that reading computer code doesn’t activate the regions of the brain that are involved in language processing. Instead, it activates a distributed network called the multiple demand network, which is also related to complex tasks such as solving maths problems or crossword puzzles.
Although reading computer code activates the multiple demand network, it appears to rely more on different parts of the network than maths or logic problems do. “Understanding computer code seems to be its own thing. It isn’t the same as language, and it isn’t the same as maths and logic,” says Anna Ivanova, an MIT graduate student and the lead author of the study.
Evelina Fedorenko is the senior author of the paper, which appears today in eLife. A major focus of her research is the relationship between language and other cognitive (认知) functions. In particular, she has been studying the question of whether other functions rely on the brain’s language network, which includes Broca’s area and other regions in the left hemisphere (半球) of the brain. In previous work, her lab has shown that music and maths don’t appear to activate this language network.
There are two schools of thought regarding how the brain learns to code, she says. One holds that in order to be good at programming, you must be good at maths. The other suggests that because of the parallels between coding and language, language skills might be more relevant. To clarify this issue, the researchers set out to study whether brain activity patterns while reading computer code would overlap (重叠) with language-related brain activity.

24、 Sophia Joffe is a Toronto-area high school student at Country Day School who created eLearn. fyi : an online database compiled (编译)of more than 300 online learning tools. Students are able to access her website to create an online learning profile where they can manage their studies in an approach.
The Grade 12 student used her own experience shifting from a classroom setting to an online platform as inspiration for her program.
“It was really difficult and it was really stressful knowing that right after the outbreak of the COVID-19 we jumped into a totally new online learning system --- it was quite different from an in-class instruction," said Joffe in an interview with CTV's Your Morning on Friday.
She expected that there would be added resources to help students cope as they shifted to an online learning environment9 but her expectations fell short. Not only were there few available, but resources lacked quality, she said.
Like many students, Joffe is concerned the COVID-19 pandemic has caused learning loss for many students. Her goal isn't only to reduce the stress the pandemic has put on students, but remove learning loss altogether.
As was first reported in the New York Times, Joffe invested $ 19 — the cost of hosting a website -- and created eLearn. fyi. By October, Joffe's online traffic had 500 unique visitors from more than 40 countries. The program categorizes grades from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and then breaks subjects down, making it easier for students to digest classroom material in a simple way. Joffe's website clearly organizes students' classes and takes them to simple apps and websites that help guide them through any given subject.
Joffe hopes the Canadian government will one day work in partnership with tech companies to modernize the learning experience and the platforms like Netflix could pose an opportunity where students can stream classes at their own pace while having their entire education at their fingertips.
【1】What did Sophia Joffe initially think of online learning?
A.It was less different from classroom learning.
B.It really made her feel more or less stressed.
C.It was an effective way to fight the COVID-19.
D.It provided a good opportunity to create eLearn. fyi.
【2】What made Sophia upset at the beginning of online study?
A.Not getting adequate and qualified resources.
B.Not knowing how to obtain study materials.
C.Having no experience on running a website.
D.Finding it a tough job to host a website.
【3】Why did Sophia create eLearn. fyi?
A.To gain some income by investing a small sum.
B.To get her online database far more perfect.
C.To collect some useful learning resources.
D.To give a hand to those who are learning online.
【4】What can be inferred according to the sixth paragraph?
A.The eLearn. fyi has brought Joffe a big income.
B.Joffe has benefited students at home and abroad.
C.Joffe also sells some learning apps to students.
D.The eLearn. fyi creates a similar classroom environment.
