  • 21、   Six supporters of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), including one inside a cat costume and another dressed as a pig, marched on the sidewalk outside High School District 113 in Highland Park, Illinois, US. Their goal was to get the district to end animal dissection in science classes.

Animal dissection has always divided people: Is it right to dissect frogs, pigs or other animals in school science classes, particularly when computers can show detailed images of the parts of animals?

“Especially with all the violence in the US, it is important we teach children compassion for all living beings, said Mysti Lee, assistant campaign manager for PETA.

The American Anti-Vivisection Society reports that 18 states, including Illinois, have laws allowing students to choose alternatives to dissection. And in recent years, biology classes have moved toward the study of cells, molecules and genetics. “Dissection is horrific and unnecessary,” protester Victor Przysiezny said.

However, most biology teachers believe that dissection is an important part of education when done right. “It’s one thing to see it on a computer screen,” said Jaclyn Reeves. “Its another to see the size and scale. Science is about getting your hands dirty.” She added that dissection can inspire students to take up a career in biology or put them off.

At its recent protest in Highland Park, PET A singled out Bio Corp., a company that provides frogs, pigs, turtles, rabbits, cats and other animals and their parts for educational purposes. Following the charges of animal cruelty, Bill Wadd, co-owner of Bio Corp., invited city officials to tour Bio Corp. He said that more than 98 percent of the animals Bio Corp received last year were already dead. “We just take what people would throw away,” Wadd said. “Instead of throwing it in the trash, why not have students learn from it?”

District 113 spokeswoman Christine Gonzales said that district officials would think about using computer images in class instead. “We are always looking for new and innovative methods, because we do want to ensure our kids get the best instruction and are kind to all creatures,” she said.

    1Who opposes animal dissection?

    A.Illinois’ local residents. B.Victor Przysiezny.

    C.Jaclyn Reeves. D.Bill Wadd.

2What does the underlined phrase in Pharaoh 5 mean?

A.Getting personally involved in a task. B.Becoming involved with something illegal.

C.Observing an operation on a computer screen. D.Making your hands unclean by hard work.

3What do we know about Bio Corp.?

A.It gets rid of dead animals as trash. B.It is a member company of PETA.

C.It gets along very well with local officials. D.It offers mostly dead animals for research.

4What is the attitude of District 113 to ending animal dissection?

    A.Supportive. B.Cautious.

    C.Disapproving. D.Doubtful.

  • 23、"Why do we have to learn all this dumb stuff?"

Of all the complaints and questions I have heard from my students during my years in the classroom, this was the one most frequently asked. I would answer it by telling the following legend.

One night a group of nomads(游牧民) were preparing to retire for the evening when suddenly they were surrounded by a great light. They knew they were in the presence of a godly being. With great expectation, they awaited a heavenly message of great importance that they knew must be especially for them.

Finally, the voice spoke, "Gather as many pebbles (鹅卵石) as you can. Put them in your bags. Travel a day's journey and tomorrow night will find you glad and it will find you sad."

The nomads shared their disappointment and anger with each other. They had expected the

inspiration of a great universal truth that would enable them to create wealth, health and purpose for the world. But instead they were given a silly task that made no sense to them at all. However, the memory of the brilliance of their visitor caused each one to pick up a few pebbles and store them in their bags while voicing their displeasure.

They traveled a day's journey and that night while making camp, they reached into their bags and discovered every pebble they had gathered had become a diamond. They were glad they had diamonds. They were sad they had not gathered more pebbles.

It was an experience I had with a student, whom I shall call Alan, early in my teaching career that illustrated the truth of that legend to me.

When Alan was in the eighth grade, he majored in "trouble" with a minor in "suspensions (停学)". He had studied how to be a bully and was getting his master's degree in "thievery".

Every day I had my students memorize a quotation from a great thinker. As I called roll, I would begin a quotation. To be counted present, the student would be expected to finish the thought.

"Alice Adams--- 'There is no failure except..."'

"'In no longer trying.' I'm present, Mr. Schlatter."

So, by the end of the year, my young pupils would have memorized 150 great thoughts.

"People nowadays know the price of everything and the value of nothing."

    "No pains, no gains."

"If you can conceive it, and believe it, you can achieve it."

No one complained about this daily routine other than Alan - right up to the day he was expelled(开除) and I lost touch with him for five years. Then one day, he called. He was in a special program at one of the neighboring colleges and had just finished parole(假释).

He told me that after being sent to juvenile hall (少管所) and finally being shipped off to the

California Youth Authority for his wrong doings, he had become so disgusted with himself that he had taken a razor blade and cut his wrists.

He said, "You know what, Mr. Schlatter, as I lay there with my life running out of my body, I

suddenly remembered that quote you made me write 20 times one day." There is no failure except in no longer trying." Then it suddenly made sense to me. As long as I was alive, I wasn't a failure, but if I allowed myself to die, I would most certainly die a failure. So with my remaining strength, I called for help and started a new life."

At the time he had heard the quotation, it was a pebble. When he needed guidance in a moment of crisis, it had become a diamond. And so it is to you I say, gather all the pebbles you can, and you can count on a future filled with diamonds.

1What does the underlined sentence "it will find you sad" mean?

    A. The God told the nomads to gather pebbles that made no sense to them.

    B. The pebbles won't enable the nomads to create fortune.

    C. The God didn't give the nomads the message they expected.

    D. The nomads regretted not having gathered as many pebbles as possible.

2Which of following sentences from the passage brings out the author's sense of humor?

    A. They were given a silly task that made no sense to them at all. (Para. 5)

    B. He majored in "trouble" with a minor in "suspensions. (Para. 8)

    C. People nowadays know the price of everything and the value of nothing. (Para. 13)

    D. You can count on a future filled with diamonds. (Para. 19)

3Which of the following is FALSE according to the passage?

    A. Not all the nomads gathered and stored some pebbles in their bags.

    B. Students who finished the half-sentence quotation were counted present.

    C. All students don't like the daily routine of finishing the half-sentence quotation.

    D. It was the strong faith of never dying a failure that saved Alan's life.

4Why did Alan commit suicide after being shipped off to the California Youth Authority?

    A. He hated the hard life in the juvenile hall.

    B. He was expelled by the school in the end.

    C. He was badly treated at the California Youth Authority.

    D. He felt so disappointed and hopeless about himself and his future.

5According to the passage, we can conclude that Mr. Schlatter is an educator of _____.

    A. sympathy and kindness   B. wisdom and patience

    C. generosity and creativity   D. faith and devotion

6Which of the following may probably be the best title?

    A. A naughty trouble-marker.   B. Pebbles and nomads.

    C. The magic pebble.   D. A quotation that saved life.

  • 24、It used to be a matter of fact when Peter Pan — a character from James Matthew Barrie’s 1911 book — said, “All children, except one, grow up.”

But this “fact” doesn’t seem to apply to today’s world any more.

According to the NPD Group, a US market research company, sales of toys to adults in the UK increased by more than 20 percent in 2016, three times the pace of the children’s toy market itself. These toys ranged from puzzles and Lego building sets to vehicle models and action figures. And more than half of the sales came from millennials — people born between the 1980s and 2000s.

“Adults of the 21st century are channeling their inner child, one toy at a time,” commented website Koreaboo. This is also why these adults are sometimes referred to as “kidults”.

According to Frederique Tutt, an analyst at NPD, the motivation of these grownups is to escape the stress of today’s fastpaced world. They are driven toward the more immediate pleasures brought by toys than those brought by, say, getting a promotion, which is far less easy to achieve.

“It reminds me of the playful side of life,” Rob Willner, a 25yearold PhD student in the UK, told The Telegraph when talking about his love for Lego, which he said brings him both comfort and entertainment. Despite this, some social scientists see the trend as disturbing. To Frank Furendi, a professor at the University of Kent in the UK, the fact that so many adults are pursuing “the thrills of youth” is the evidence that “adulthood has got nothing attractive about it anymore”, he told The New York Times. “That’s actually quite sad. ”

But scientists are probably just worried too much. According to Canadian comic book artist Todd McFarlane, collecting toys could simply be a way for people to express their individuality. “It’s just pop culture stuff. It’s stuff that says, ‘I like a little of this and I like a little of that, ’” he told ABC News. “It’s no big deal.”

So now that over 100 years have passed since Peter Pan, perhaps it’s time to introduce a new “fact”, as stated in the tagline (标语) of the UK fashion brand KIDULT: “Growing old is mandatory (被迫的), but growing up is optional.”

【1】What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 imply?

A.Something old is not suitable for a new world.

B.Many adults still have some childlike features.

C.All children grow up as they become adults.

D.It’s difficult for some children to grow up in today’s world.

【2】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Frederique Tutt believes that some adults enjoy playing with children’s toys to escape the stress.

B.Rob Willner believes that the pleasure brought by toys is easier to achieve.

C.Frank Furendi believes that the thrill of youth does not attract adults.

D.Todd McFarlane is worried too much about collecting toys.

【3】What is the writer’s attitude towards the trend of growing kidults?

    A.Supportive.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Critical.

    D.Indifferent.

【4】What can be the best title for the passage?

    A.Growing up with Peter Pan

    B.Toys Sales on the Rise

C.The Rise of a Trend: Kidults

    D.Kidults in Fashion Again

I peered over my grandma’s shoulder as she sewed pieces of cloth together. The two pieces became one faster than I’d imagined. The colors, however, looked ugly when put together and none of the patterns matched. All the patches (补丁) on this blanket seemed to disagree.

“Grandma, that’s the ugliest quilt (棉被) I’ve ever seen.”

“Oh, sweetie, it’s warm and beautiful,” said Grandma, pointing to a pile of crazy patterned shirts and suits. “I can take these old clothes that Grandpa and I will never wear again and turn them into something useful and good. It’s not the quilts appearance but the love that sews it together that makes it beautiful. This quilt will keep you warm on a cold night like tonight. And I know that for a fact.” Grandma put her hand on my shoulder, “Not everyone is as lucky as we are. Here, put on your coat. We’ll get a second opinion about how ugly my quilts are.”

Grandma folded a finished quilt and tucked it into a shopping bag. Afterwards, we got in the car and drove downtown. The white snow turned grayer as we got to the city. Eventually, Grandma pulled up at a dark alley (胡同) and we got out of the car. The terrible smell of rotting garbage made me feel sick and pinch my nose shut. Grandma took my hand and led me to the street lamp. I could see the snow shimmering (发出微光) in the light.

Grandma paused. “There’s usually somebody down this alley. It’s quiet and out of the wind--a good place to stay on cold nights. A nice warm quilt might make it even better.”

The dark engulfed (吞没) Grandma and I as we stepped deep into the alley. The pavement was cracked and missing in spots. Chicken bones and stained boxes littered their way. And Grandma’s shoes made a loud sound with each step. Feeling frightened, I squeezed Grandma’s hand. Grandma squeezed my hand back. “Its OK.” she smiled.

“Who’s there?” shouted a voice out of the darkness.

    Paragraph 1:

“I have a nice warm quilt, if you want it,” said Grandma.
