二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Once upon a time, a man was walking on a mountain when he found an incredible cave with all kinds of treasure inside it. So he gave up his job, his home, and his friends, and spent all his time guarding the cave.

He was so devoted to it that he hardly ate or drank, and before long he fell ill. One day, when he could hardly move at all, he decided to share the treasure.

He crawled (爬) into the cave to get a handful of jewels, but discovered, to his horror, that it was empty except for a small emerald (绿宝石). The man took it and gave it to the first person to come by, a woman.

Then an old man came by. “What bad luck!” the man said. “Just a moment ago I gave a woman the last of the treasure I was guarding.”

“Are you sure there is nothing left?” the old man asked.

The man took him into the cave, where they found a box with jewels and some bags of gold. The man was shocked, and the old man explained to him, “At last! At last someone has broken the spell (咒语) of this cave. This is the Cave of Treasure, and you’re the first to have passed its great test. Many have devoted their lives to this cave, only to end up realizing there was nothing here…”

“And why does this happen?” the man asked.

“This magic cave has only as many riches as your own heart. When someone discovers it, the cave fills with the treasure they bring with them, but later, when they have devoted themselves to guarding the treasure, their hearts become empty, as does the cave. The only way to fill it is by filling your heart with all that is good, as you did by giving the woman that last jewel.”

From that day on, the man understood that it was better to share than to keep. Thanks to the cave and the old man, he became noble and generous.

【1】Why did the man give up his job, home and friends?

A.Because he possessed a variety of treasure.

B.Because he devoted himself to a great test.

C.Because he had to guard the treasure cave.

D.Because he wanted to find the treasure cave.

【2】What did the man find when he showed the cave to the old man?

    A.All kinds of treasure.

B.A box with jewels and gold.

    C.A small emerald.

    D.A handful of beautiful jewels.

【3】What do we learn about the people who devoted their lives to the cave before?

A.They all found the cave empty at last.

B.The old man freed them from its spell.

C.They all filled the cave with the treasure they had.

D.They thought it was better to share.

【4】What can we learn from the text?

    A.Different people have different views.

B.Treasure only belongs to those who possess it.

C.Some people never learn what is really valuable.

D.The quality of giving is real treasure.

  • 22、August 1990,Boston

    Dear Maya Shao-ming,

To me,June 6,1990 is a special day.My long-awaited dream came true the minute your father cried,“A girl!” You are more than just a second child, more than just a girl to match our boy. You,little daughter, are the link to our female line, the legacy of another woman’s pain and sacrifice 31 years ago.

Let me tell you about your Chinese grandmother.Somewhere in Hong Kong,in the late fifties,a young waitress found herself pregnant(怀孕)by a cook, probably a co-worker at her restaurant. She carried the baby to term, suffered to give it birth, and kept the little girl for the first three months of her life.I like to think that my mother—your grandmother—loved me and fought to raise me on her own,but that the daily struggle was too hard.Worn down by the demands of the new baby and perhaps the constant threat of starvation, she made the painful decision to give away her girl so that both of us might have a chance for a better life.

More likely,I was dropped at the orphanage(孤儿院)steps or somewhere else.I will probably never know the truth.Having a baby in her unmarried state would have brought shame on the family in China,so she probably kept my existence a secret.Once I was out of her life,it was as if I had never been born. And so you and your brother and I are the missing leaves on a family tree.

Do they ever wonder if we exist?

Before I was two,I was adopted by an Anglo couple.Fed three square meals a day,I grew like a wild weed and grasped all the opportunities they had to offer—books, music, education, church life and community activities. In a family of blue-eyed blonds, though,I stood out like a sore thumb.Whether from jealousy or fear of someone who looked so different,my older brothers sometimes teased me about my unpleasing skin,or made fun of my clumsy walk.Moody and impatient, burdened by fears that none of us realized resulted from my early years of need,I was not an easy child to love.My mother and I conflicted countless times over the years, but gradually came to see one another as real human beings with faults and talents, and as women of strength in our own right.Lacking a mirror image in the mother who raised me,I had to seek my identity as a woman on my own.The Asian American community has helped me regain my double identity.

But part of me will always be missing:my beginnings,my personal history, all the delicate details that give a person her origin.Nevertheless, someone gave me a lucky name“Siu Wai”.“Siu”means“little”,and“Wai”means“clever”.Therefore,my baby name was“Clever little one.”Who chose those words?Who cared enough to note my arrival in the world?

I lost my Chinese name for 18 years. It was Americanized for convenience to“Sue”.But like an ill-fitting coat,it made me uncomfortable.I hated the name. But even more,I hated being Chinese. It took many years to become proud of my Asian origin and work up the courage to take back my birth-name.That,plus a little knowledge of classroom Cantonese is all the Chinese culture I have to offer you.Not white, certainly, but not really Asian,I try to pave the way between the two worlds and bridge the gap for you.Your name,“Shao-ming”,is very much like mine—“Shao”means“little”.And“ming”is“bright”,as in a shining sun or moon.Whose lives will you brighten, little Maya?Your past is more complete than mine, and each day I cradle you in your babyhood, generously giving you the loving care I lacked for my first two years. When I pat you,I comfort the lost baby inside me who still cries for her mother.

Sweet Maya,it doesn’t matter what you“become”later on.You have already fulfilled my wildest dreams.

    I love you.

    Mammy

A.Her dream of being a mother came true.

B.She found her origin from her Chinese mother.

C.She wrote the letter to her daughter.

D.Her female line was well linked.

    A.It is bitter and disappointing.

    B.It is painful but understandable.

    C.She feels sorry but sympathetic.

    D.She feels hurt and angry.

    3What does“I stood out like a sore thumb”in Paragraph 5 mean?

A.I walked clumsily out of pains.

B.I was not easy to love due to jealousy.

C.I was impatient out of fear.

    D.I looked different from others.

4What can be inferred from Mommy’s Anglo family life?

D.She kept her love for Asia from childhood.

  • 23、A remarkable new study on how whales behaved when attacked by humans in the 19th century has implications for the way they react to changes caused by humans in the 2Ist century.

The paper is authored by Whitehead and Rendellt at Dalhousie University and their research addresses an age- -old question: if whales are so smart, why did they hang around to be killed? The answer? They didn't. Using newly digitised   (数字化的) logbooks detailing the hunting of whales in the north Pacific, the authors discovered that within just a few years, the strike rate of the whalers’ harpoons(捕鲸者的鱼叉) fell by 58%. This simple fact leads to an astonishing conclusion: that information about what was happening to them was being collectively shared among the whales, who made vital changes to their behaviour. They learned quickly from their mistakes.

“Sperm whales have a traditional way of reacting to attacks from orca (杀人鲸),” notes Whitehead. Before humans, orca were their only predators (捕食者), against whom sperm whales form defensive circles, their powerful taills held outwards to keep predators at bay, “But such techniques just made it easier for the whalers to kill them,” says Whitehead.

Sperm whales are highly socialised animals, able to communicate over great distances. Information about the new dangers may have been passed on in the same way they share knowledge about feeding grounds. They also possess the largest brain on the planet. It is not hard to imagine that they understood what was happening to them.

The hunters themselves realised the whales’efforts to escape. They saw that the animals appeared to communicate the threat within their attacked groups. Abandoning their usual defensive formations, the whales swam upwind to escape the hunters, ships, themselves wind-powered.

Now, just as whales are beginning to recover from the industrial destruction by 20th-century whaling fleets, whose steamships and grenade harpoons no whale could escape from, they face new threats created by our technology. “They’re having to learn not to get hit by ships, cope with the depredations (劫掠) of long line fishing, the changing source of their food due to climate change,”Whitehead says. “The same sort of urgent social learning the animals experienced in the whale wars of two centuries ago is reflected in the way they negotiate today's uncertain world.”

【1】What is the new study mainly about?

    A.Whales’ social lives.

    B.Whales’emotional intelligence.

    C.Whales’ reaction to climate changes.

    D.Whales’ behavior under human attack.

【2】What caused whales to make changes to escape the hunters’ ship?

    A.The wind in their favor.

    B.Their powerful physical strength.

    C.The shared ship attack information.

    D.Their usual defensive formations.

【3】What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 5?

    A.State possible reasons.

    B.Add background information.

    C.Summarize the previous paragraphs.

D.Introduce a new topic for discussion.

【4】What's Whitehead’s attitude towards whales’ future survival?

    A.Pessimistic.

    B.Unclear.

    C.Cautious.

    D.Optimistic.

  • 24、   Are you aware that every single person on this planet who has ever lived, lives now or will live, has a different perception of reality? The way each of us perceives the world is to some degree different than any other person's perception of reality. ____ What is absolutely real and right for you may be an illusion, or nonexistent, or completely false for another!

It's important to know this. ____ For example, the news media loves to create drama, and one of their favorite methods is to elicit(引起) fear: fear of other people, fear of the weather, fear of the economy, etc. The news media tells us how to perceive the world—and if a person takes the newscasters at their word, they perceive the world to be very dangerous and hostile. To that personthe mental images and emotions suggested by other people create a version of reality that is completely different from the reality perceived by someone who does not watch the news.

Things are not always what they seem. For most people, seeing is believing, which is why magicians, artists and marketers are so successful. Just like the TV news, they show you only what they want you to see and it is perceived as reality. But how would that reality change if you saw what went on behind the scenes or what was left out?

    What's your story?

We all have a story. Over time, your story takes on a life of its own and you become your story. But who's the author and why did him put so much crap in there? All that unnecessary suffering, struggle, heartache, worry and pain... wouldn't it be better to live a story without all that? Who wants to live in a story with that much boredom and unfulfilled longings?

The story got its start when you were born, and was coauthored by you along with the influences in your life. ____ Anytime you were influenced by someone or something, you unconsciously handed your pen over and said “Here, you write this about me.” So you are not even writing your OWN story! No one does—until they recognize that fact, and make a conscious decision to take control of the pen. You CAN write your story the way you want it to play out.

    ________________

It is helpful to understand how the brain takes reality and filters it to create your unique perception of reality. It's an automatic unconscious action that is based on

    ● Physical experiences (which is why some optical illusions are extremely unsettling)

    ● Past conditioning (how you are programmed to see the world)

____ When you become aware of the fact that you are constructing your own reality, you can take charge and build one that is more pleasing. If you change your mind, your vibration and your intentions, you can change your circumstances! Instead of, “I am a victim of circumstance” imprint in your mind,  “I am the cocreator of my life” Instead of, “I am sick and tired of...” imprint in your mind“I am in control and enthusiastic about what I do”

Raise your vibration by thinking, talking and acting more positively. As positiveness becomes a mental habitthat change will become your new inner reality, which will soon manifest in your outer reality.

The power of perception is immense. Choose to see more good than bad, more abundance than lack, more love than indifference and more success than struggle.

1How does the author present his viewpoints in the first three paragraphs?

A.By answering questions. B.By giving examples.

C.By making comparisons. D.By drawing conclusions.

2The sentence “Because if you are not aware, your perception, world view and reality are created by other people.” should be put in ________

    A. B. C. D.

3Which of the following subtitles can be filled in the blank?

    A.Seeing is not believing

    B.Live up to your expectations

C.Change your perception and create a new reality

D.Physical experiences and past conditioning really count

4What is the tone of the passage?

    A.Instructive. B.Humorous.

    C.Critical. D.Ironic.
