Tool to crow about
New Caledonian crows, birds with surprising and impressive abilities, seem to use tools constantly, not just when they’re trying to get food. Oxford researchers report that New Caledonian crows use sticks to poke (戳) at new and potentially threatening objects, providing the first evidence that birds use tools for more than just finding food. Of the 10 crows tested in the experiment, four used sticks to poke at and explore a rubber spider (蜘蛛), a flashing bicycle light and other items that they had never seen before, the scientists report online in Animal Cognition. Checking out possible threats without making direct contact may benefit curious birds like crows.
Apes (猿) show handedness
Contrary to earlier reports, ape species, including chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans, show humanlike hand preferences when handling objects. Chimpanzees and gorillas favored the right hand and orangutans the left hand, a team led by psychologist William Hopkins of Agnes Scott College, found in a study to appear in the Journal of Human Evolution. Hopkins and his colleagues observed which hand 777 apes used to reach peanut butter inside a long tube. He wants to explore reasons for orangutans’ left-handedness. No human societies exist in which the majority of individuals are left-handed, and neither are there societies in which left-handedness is completely absent.
Plants go downhill
Researchers looking uphill for biological responses to climate change may be missing species moving downhill, say researchers from California. Plant species do move, as seeds that are spread tend to grow better in one place than in another. As temperatures rise, some species could, or already do, move uphill to find the kind of cool spots they’re used to. But the best elevation (高度) for a plant to maintain its water balance can shift with climate change. Comparing survey and climate records from the 1930s and the present day for 64 California plant species, the best water-balancing elevation shifted downhill more often than up, the scientists report in Science.

23、 When the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, the resulting view of the Sun is called a solar eclipse(日食). Solar eclipses are beautiful astronomical events and many people across the world travel to faraway places to get a clear view of the phenomenon. 【1】 Others choose special eyewear.
It is believed that a pregnant woman with a baby should not view a solar eclipse. They are often told that their child will be badly formed if they view a solar eclipse. However, various scientific authorities have stated over and over again that there is no harm at all in viewing a solar eclipse with the right eye gear. 【2】
It is important, however, that you view a solar eclipse with the right eye gear. Staring right at the sun could permanently damage the eyes. It is wrong to assume that the sun can be looked at after the moon blocks out a majority of it. 【3】
If you want to view the eclipse, you have to get special glasses. As opposed to popular belief, sunglasses and dark films do NOT protect our eyes. 【4】 You can do this by fixing a telescope and focusing the image onto a sheet of paper. You can clearly see the eclipse on the sheet of paper. You should never look directly at the eclipse through the telescope.
Similarly, you can make a tiny hole on an opaque(不透明的) sheet of paper and let the light passing through fall on a sheet of paper. 【5】 Alternatively, you can watch it live on TV which is the safest way of viewing a solar eclipse!
A.It is best if you purchase eye wear.
B.So they need not worry to view a solar eclipse.
C.Viewing a solar eclipse directly is a strict no-no.
D.Some of them watch the event through special, telescopes.
E.This method is an effective way to watch an eclipse as well.
F.To safely watch a solar eclipse, wear protective eclipse glasses.
G.The best way to see a solar eclipse is by viewing its projected image.
24、 An international team has identified two areas in China where the scale of carbon dioxide absorption by new forests has been underestimated. Taken together, these areas account for a little over 35% of China's entire land carbon “sink”, the group says.
The two previously under-appreciated carbon sink areas are centred on China's southwest, in Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi; and its northeast, particularly Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces.
These provinces have established a pattern of rapid afforestation of progressively larger regions, with provincial forest areas increasing by between 0.04 million and 0.44 million hectares per year over the past 10 to 15 years.
“Bold scientific statements must be supported by massive amounts of evidence and this is what we have done in this study.” Professor Paul Palmer, a co-author from Edinburgh University told the BBC.
“We have collected together a range of ground-based and satellite data-driven evidence to form a consistent and robust narrative about the Chinese carbon cycle.”
China's increasing leafiness has been evident for some time. Billions of trees have been planted in recent decades, to deal with desertification and soil loss, and to establish vibrant timber and paper industries.
Data from NASA Earth satellites shows that human activity in China and India dominate this greening of the planet, thanks to tree planting and agriculture. Satellite data (2000—2017) reveal a greening pattern that is strikingly remarkable in China and India and overlaps with croplands world-wide.
China alone accounts for 25% of the global net increase in leaf area with only 6.6% of global vegetated area.
【1】According to the passage, which of the following is true about the two newly-identified areas?
A.They are based on Southeast and Northwest China.
B.Their forests have absorbed over 35% of China’s carbon dioxide.
C.They take up over one third of China’s entire land carbon sink areas.
D.Their forest areas have increased from 0.04 to 0.44 million hectares per year.
【2】China has planted more trees in recent decades in order to _________.
A.keep the soil fertile
B.set up more factories
C.turn the deserts into green land
D.prevent useful land from changing into desert
【3】The passage is most probably taken from _________.
A.a science fiction
B.a news website
C.an academic report
D.a travelling brochure
【4】Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A.Carbon Sink Areas in China

My wife, Megan, and I went out to dinner with an old friend who we had not seen in a while. There had been some talk of COVID-19 (新型冠状病毒)on the news, but it was early in the outbreak and people were still going about their daily routines. Even though everyone in our group felt perfectly fine, we took precautions(预防):We washed our hands with soap , did not share food and had no significantly close contact.
A few days later, our friend called and told us that she had tested positive for the coronavirus. She had felt some mild symptoms(症状)for a day or so after that dinner and was able to be tested because she is a doctor. On the following day, started to feel a little tired and my head was a bit cloudy. I decided to stay in the master bedroom away from the rest of my family. The next morning. I woke up with a 39-degree fever. That was when we realized that I might have caught the virus from our friend.
At once, Megan called our state's coronavirus hotline, who then called in our primary care doctor and the head of our local hospital system's coronavirus team. We explained that we had been in contact with someone who had been tested positive, and I was having symptoms. They quickly approved me to receive a test at an urgent care center located five minutes' drive from my house. The result made my heart sank — I was also tested positive, and the local hospital wasn't equipped with the facilities to treat my disease. As a mild case, I was recommended to stay at home and quarantine (隔离)myself.
Following the doctor's advice, Megan and I quarantined ourselves and our children. With my developed symptoms , I started isolation in the bedroom, and the only interaction I had with Megan was when she brought in food. Megan slept on a small couch in our home office away from the kids' rooms. She also minimized her contact with our kids in case she was carrying the virus.
