  • 22、No one can deny that the idea of the metaverse(元宇宙) has started to spread to the unknown lands.

The wish of metaverse as a shared universe where people from across the world can play, learn, share, and even work together is futuristic(未来派的). Busy streets filled with stores, parks, and people can all be recreated in the metaverse, but the technology is still not something that every person can easily access.

Another step toward mainstream recognition lies in the realism of the metaverse experience. The introduction of VR and AR into the metaverse will certainly go a long way in making the experience feel far more realistic than it does with a keyboard and mouse.

We’ve already seen interesting crossovers(转型) that tested the limits of the metaverse. Travis Scott held a virtual concert in an online game that was attended by over 12 million people. Even though The Sandbox, an upcoming metaverse, isn’t live yet, Snoop Dogg, a crazy supporter of metaverse, already owns his land in it and lets people buy VIP passes to visit his big house in the future.

Zuckerberg believes that the future of the internet lies in the metaverse and he even went as far as to call it the successor to mobile internet. Whether that is true still remains to be seen. However, one thing is for sure— it’s difficult to deny that the metaverse is no longer a wild idea pulled straight out of a science fiction film. Facebook/Meta has just added fuel to a fire that has already been burning, and in a few years, we may be seeing the metaverse used in ways we haven’t even thought possible before.

【1】Why is the technology hard to access?

    A.Negative voice.

    B.Less realistic experience.

    C.Dull introduction.

    D.Less practical expectation.

【2】What can we say about Snoop?

A.He goes in for buying lands.

B.He gets attached to the metaverse.

C.He attends a virtual online concert.

D.He enables people to visit his house.

    【3】How does Zuckerberg like metaverse?

    A.Promising.

    B.Profitable.

    C.Unmeasured.

    D.Uncertain.

【4】What can be inferred about Facebook’s effort?

    A.It comes across obstacles.

B.It aims at the film industry.

    C.It promotes social progress.

    D.It enjoys a high reputation.

A few years ago, I was on a plane with my friend, waiting for it to take off. The pilot’s voice was heard throughout the plane: “Sorry for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. Our engines don’t work. We are going to jump-start them. Once we get them going, we’ll get up in the air and see what happens.”

That was all he said. “See what happens?” Shouldn’t we have had a better plan than that? At that point. I could only laugh nervously. One woman started crying, “Oh no! We are going to crash!’’ There were sighs of hopelessness and anxiety, and we hadn’t even taken off yet.

The pilot even seemed unhappy. He told us our one engine was working double time, and his plan was to get up in the air and see what happens! Then we did. We got up in the air, and what happened? Nothing. We arrived in Norfolk, and no sooner had the wheels touched down than applause burst out as everyone on the airplane breathed a sigh of relief.

While I do prefer planning better than “see what happens” when it comes to flying, it really isn’t such a bad idea for life. All too often, people stop trying to achieve their goals just because they don’t have a guaranteed result. But success will never be guaranteed. The best thing that you can do is just get up in the air, and see what happens. If your effort is to build a business then get up in the air and see what happens! Don’t give yourself all the reasons why you can’t. Do not wait until you have everything you need. You never will!

If your goal is to start a friendship, say “Hello”, get up in the air and see what happens! The results could be very rewarding.

If your goal is to learn a new skill, get up in the air and see what happens! It might not be as difficult as your think. It could be fun!

When traveling, i hope that my pilot has a more detailed plan than “we will see what happens” But in life, it is not a bad strategy at all.

【1】What was the pilot’s attitude toward the situation?

    A.Disappointed and panicked

    B.Surprised and honest

    C.Comforting and encouraging

    D.Hesitant and weak.

【2】What was the passengers’ reaction when they arrived in Norfolk ?

    A.They were thankful and relieved.

B.They cheered for the pilot’s correct operation.

C.They complained that the plane was not safe enough

D.They just walked off the plane as if nothing had happened.

【3】What can we know from the passage?

A.The plane was delayed because of its wheels.

B.The plane arrived at the airport safely.

C.It was a terrible journey for the author.

D.Most of the passengers remained calm on hearing the bad news

【4】What is the main idea of this article ?

A.“we will see what happens” is not a good plan for pilots

B.Try to have everything prepared before you do something

C.When you want to do something, you have to actually do it

D.Never stop chasing your goals even if they are certain to fail

  • 24、We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be? There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done?

The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an EV into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC: “The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first in mobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars.” These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams.

These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita (人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport.

【1】What can we infer from the question at the end of paragraph 1?

A.We should not be too optimistic about the future.

B.Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems.

C.It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones.

D.It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles.

【2】What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in paragraph 3?

    A.compensation

    B.allowance

    C.encouragement

    D.privilege

【3】Which statement is true according to the passage?

    A.Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future.

B.Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future.

C.There are four obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric.

D.Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”.

【4】What is the most suitable title for the text?

A.Total Electric Traffic: a Long Way to Go

B.Electric Vehicles: a Road to a Greener Future

C.Electric Power or Petrol: a Tough Decision to Make

D.Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of Gases

三、完形填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 25、Optimism and pessimism are both powerful forces. Each of us must choose which we want to ______ our future and our expectations. We can choose to laugh or cry, bless or ______. It’s our decision: from which perspective do we want to view life? Will we look up in ______or down in desperation?

I believe in the upward look. I choose to ______the positive and skip right over the negative.

An optimistic attitude is not a luxury(奢侈品); it’s a(n) ______. The way you look at life will determine how you feel, how you perform, and how well you will get along with other people. ______, negative thoughts, attitudes, and expectations ______themselves; they become a self-fulfilling prophecy(预言). Pessimism creates a dark place where no one wants to live.

Years ago, I drove into a service station to get some gas. It was a beautiful day, and I was feeling great. As I walked into the station to pay for the gas, the attendant said to me, “ How do you feel?” That seemed like a(n) ______question, but I felt fine and told him so. “You don’t look well,” he replied. This ______me completely by surprise. A little ______confidently, I told him that I had ______felt better. Without hesitation, he continued to tell me how bad I looked and that my skin appeared yellow.

By the time I left the service station, I was feeling a little ______. About a block away, I ______over to the side of the road to look at my face in the mirror. How did I feel? Was I affected with jaundice(黄疸)? Was every all right? By the time I got home, I was beginning to feel a little nauseous(恶心). Did I have a bad liver? Had I ______some rare disease?

On another beautiful day, when I went into that gas station, feeling ______again, I figured out what had happened.  The place had recently been painted a bright, distasteful ______, and the light reflecting ______the walls made everyone inside look as though they had hepatitis(肝炎)! I wondered how many other folks had ______the way I did. I had let one short conversation with a total ______change my attitude for an entire day. He told me I looked sick, and before long, I

was actually feeling sick. That single ______observation had a great effect on the way I felt and acted.

The only thing more powerful than negativism is a word of optimism and hope. When a whole culture adopts an upward look, incredible things can be accomplished.
