二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Many of us have had this experience: we lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult or impossible to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable? Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.

According to a new study published in Current Biology, a significant reason is what the scientists call “first night effect”. They believe that one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to warn us about potential dangers. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment.

For the study, 35 young volunteers were asked to sleep in a sleep lab for several days. Meanwhile, researchers watched their brain activities.

According to the researchers, on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However, left-brain activity decreased as days went by, falling even to the point of complete calm. In this process, the participants got an increasingly better sleep experience.

The findings suggest that the different rhythms of the sides of the brain affect our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. Thus, the brain can’t relax and is sensitive to anything strange in the surroundings, just as it is in daytime.

“At some level, the brain is continuing to analyze things, even though you are not aware of the analysis,” US professor Jerome Siegel told Smithsonian Magazine. “If something unusual happens – if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock – you can be alert, even though the intensity of the stimulus is quite low.”

More surprisingly, this phenomenon is similar to the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake, with its corresponding eye staying open.

The researchers think that it is the result of evolution, and works to protect us in potentially dangerous environments.

If you have ever had what you think is “first night effect”, researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.

【1】What did the new study published in Current Biology find?

A.A comfortable bed could help people sleep well in a new environment.

B.Most people could sleep well in a new environment after the first night.

C.Brain activities affected people’s sleep in a new environment.

D.The right brain determined how well people slept in a new environment.

【2】What was found out about the volunteers?

A.Their left brains were more active on the first night.

B.Their right brains became more active as days went by.

C.Their right brains kept them awake the whole night.

D.They slept better in the sleep lab than at home.

【3】What do the researchers think makes the brain sensitive to new things?

A.The bad sleep experiences people have had.

B.The tiredness that people suffer from in daytime.

C.The imbalance between the two sides of the brain.

D.The strangeness of the things that people come across.

【4】What do the researchers think of “first night effect”?

A.It has evolved as a way to protect us.

    B.It’s a characteristic that animals don’t have.

C.It’s completely different from the way animals sleep.

D.It helps people to get used to new environments quickly.

  • 27、   It was New Year’s night. An aged man was standing at a window. He raised his mournful eyes towards the deep blue sky, where the stars were floating like white lilies on the surface of a clear calm lake. Then he cast them on the earth, where few more hopeless people than himself now moved towards their certain goal―the tomb. He had already passed sixty of the stages leading to it, and he had brought from his journey nothing but errors and regret. Now his health was poor, his mind vacant, his heart sorrowful, and his old age short of comforts.

The days of his youth appeared like dreams before him, and he recalled the serious moment when his father placed him at the entrance of the two roads―one leading to a peaceful, sunny place, covered with flowers, fruits and resounding with soft, sweet songs; the other leading to a deep, dark cave, which was endless, where poison flowed instead of water and where devils and poisonous snakes hissed and crawled.

He looked towards the sky and cried painfully, “O youth, return! O my father, place me once more at the entrance to life, and I’ll choose the better way ! “ But both his father and the days of his youth had passed away.

He saw the lights flowing away in the darkness. These were the days of his wasted life; he saw a star fall from the sky and disappeared, and this was the symbol of himself. His remorse, which was like a sharp arrow, struck deeply into his heart. Then he remembered his friends in his childhood, who entered life together with him. But they had made their way to success and were now honoured and happy on this New Year’s night.

The clock in the high church tower struck and the sound made him remember his parents’ early love for him. They had taught him and prayed to God for his good. But he chose the wrong way. With shame and grief he dared no longer look towards that heaven where his father lived. His darkened eyes were full of tears, and with a despairing effort, he burst out a cry: “Come back, my early days! Come back!”

And his youth did return, for all this was only a dream which he had on New Year’s night. He was still young though his faults were real; he had not yet entered the deep, dark cave, and he was still free to walk on the road which leads to the peaceful and sunny land.

Those who still linger on the entrance of life, hesitating to choose the bright road, remember that when years are passed and your feet stumble on the dark mountains, you will cry bitterly, but in vain: “O youth, return! Oh give me back my early days!”

1In the 3rd paragraph, the man cried painfully because _____________.

A.all the hopeless people were moving towards death.

B.he had lost forever the chance to take the right road.

C.his parents and the happy days of his youth were gone.

D.he refused to take the road leading to a deep dark cave.

2What happened to the man before his sudden realization?

A.He was at his father’s funeral farewell.

B.He was enjoying the New Years’ eve.

C.He was wandering at the entrance to life.

D.He was having a dream of his life in old age.

3We can infer from the story that_______________.

A.the man’s childhood friends led a joyful life liek him.

B.the man still had the opportunity to choose the right way.

C.both the man’s parents passed away when he was young.

D.the man’s father was aquite strict with his son before death.

  • 28、Find a balance between the heart and mind

Sense and sensibility was written by British author Jane Austen. It shows two sisters’ love experiences and their complicated marriages. The novel offers the contrast between sense and sensibility in a humorous way.

The elder sister, Elinor Dashwood, is the perfect representation of sense. She always refrains from expressing her emotions, even when she finds out that Edward, her lover, was engaged to another woman. Meanwhile, Marianne Dashwood is the perfect representation of sensibility. She is idealistic. When she is confronted with the nonchalance of her lover John Willoughby, Marianne is greatly annoyed.

Besides the themes of sense and sensibility, the novel also depicts the status of women in that era. Elinor and Marianne used to live with their parents. But, when their father passes away, the family’s property is passed down to their father’s son born out of wedlock. The sisters and their mother don’t have money and have to rely on their distant relative.

Due to their poor status, Willoughby, Marianne’s former lover, eventually marries a woman who does not have as much taste or elegance but who is rich.

The author showed readers the importance of money rather romance in this era. Marriages often depend on the financial situations of either side.

As the story evolves, Elinor and Marianne learn from each other. Marianne learns more self-restraint, and she marries her long-time admirer Colonel Brandon. Elinor is finally able to better express her emotions, and gets married with her lover Edward.

Through their parallel experience of love loss, the sisters learn that sense must mix with sensibility if they are to find personal happiness in a society where status and money govern the rules of love.

1What is the theme of the novel Sense and Sensibility?

A.Sense should mix with sensibility. B.Status and money govern marriages.

C.Real love is never a selfish emotion. D.There is no true love in the real world.

2What is paragraph 3 mainly about?

A.The sisters’ family background. B.The loss of Dashwood’s property.

C.The rules of love in Austin’s era. D.Women’s social position in Austin’s era.

3Which of the following is true according to the text?

A.Edward gets married to a rich woman. B.Colonel Brandon admires Elinor at first.

C.Finally Elinor finds her true happiness. D.Marianne marries Willoughby in the end.

4What type of writing is the text?

A.A news report. B.A book review.

    C.A biography. D.A movie poster.

  • 29、   In life, we're often torn between the person we want to be and the person we ought to be. Yet, while many hesitate to take the risks of becoming their "ideal self', a new study shows that people regret not running after their passion.

Inspired by research published in the 1990s, psychologist Thomas Gilovich along with his colleague built upon his original study, which proved that regrets came from what people hadn't done, by looking into the content of people's most enduring regrets grown from not living up to our "ideal self", as opposed to not living according to our "ought self".

Researchers began by explaining the difference between regrets concerning the "ideal self" and the "ought self", before asking participants to list their regrets. Across the six different studies conducted as part of this project, participants said they experienced regrets concerning their ideal self more often. They also mentioned more ideal-self regrets than ought-self regrets when asked to list their regrets in life so far.

"Our work is the first to show that people's biggest life regrets more often involve failures to live up to their ideal self than their ought self," the researchers said. They advise that people go on with caution, as the best way to live depends on how much weight you place on your ought self and your ideal self. If you care more about your ought self, you'll be wise to minimize your regrets by thinking twice before going ahead and seizing the moment.

Despite this research, however, knowing what you want and pursuing that passion are two different things. Maybe you'll be encouraged by a quote from Mark Twain:" Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor, and catch the trade winds in your sails."

1What did Thomas's original study prove?

    A. People didn't take a risk in life.

    B. People regretted what they hadn't done.

    C. People lived up to their ideal self.

    D. People regretted pursuing their passion.

2How was the researchers' new study carried out?

    A. By analyzing six different studies.

    B. By analyzing people's various responses.

    C. By explaining the difference among regrets.

    D. By comparing ideal-self and ought-self regrets.

3What did the researchers advise people to do?

    A. Look back now and then.

    B. Think twice before feeling regretful.

    C. Live according to their choice.

    D. Care more about their own life.

4What is implied in Mark Twain's quote in the last paragraph?

    A. Everyone should be forced to pursue their goals.

    B. Everyone should make full use of their surroundings.

    C. Everyone should have the courage to pursue their goals.

    D. Everyone should stop themselves from getting disappointed.

Under these silences there was a / an orchestra of natural music playing notes no city child would ever hear. A certain cackle from the henhouse meant we had gained an egg. The creak of a porch swing told of a momentary breeze blowing across my grandmother’s yard. As I 2 along a mossy bank to surprise a frog, a 3splash told me the quarry had spotted me and slipped into the stream. Wandering among the sleeping houses, I learned that tin roofs crackle under the power of the sun, and when I tired and came back to my grandmother’s house, I padded into her dark cool living room, lay 4 on the floor, and listened to the hypnotic beat of her pendulum clock on the wall ticking the meaningless hours away.

I was enjoying the luxuries of a rustic nineteenth-century boyhood, but for the women Morrisonville life had few 5. Their lives were hard, endless, dirty labor.

For baths, laundry, and dishwashing, they hauled buckets of water from a spring at the foot of a hill. To heat it, they chopped kindling to fire their wood stoves. They boiled laundry in tubs, scrubbed it on washboards until knuckles were 6, and wrung it out by hand. Ironing was a business of lifting heavy metal weights heated on the stove top.

They scrubbed floors on hands and knees, thrashed rugs with carpet beaters, killed and plucked their own chickens, baked bread and parties, grew and conned their won vegetables, patched the family’s clothing on treadle-operated sewing machines, 7before the men to start the stove for breakfast and pack lunch pails, polished the chimneys of kerosene lamps, and even found time to tend the flowers that grew around every house. By the end of a summer day a Morrisonville woman had toiled like a serf.

At sundown the men drifted back from the fields exhausted and 8. They scrubbed themselves in enamel basins and, when supper was eaten, climbed up onto the porch to watch the night arrive. Presently the women 9 them, and the twilight music of Morrisonville began.

The swing creaking , rocking chairs 10 on the porch planks, voices murmuring approval of the sagacity of Uncle Irvey as he quietly observed for probably the ten-thousandth time in his life, “A man works from sun to sun, but a woman’s work is never done.”

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

Being in “deep water” is almost the same as being in “hot water”. When you are in deep water, you are in a difficult 2. Imagine a person who cannot swim being thrown in water over his head. You are in deep water when you are facing a problem that you do not have the ability to solve. The problem is too deep. You can be in deep water, for example, if you invest in stocks in complete 3 of the stock market.

"Water over the dam" is another expression about a past event. It is something that cannot be 4. The expression comes from the idea that water that has 5 a dam cannot be brought back again. When a friend is 6 by a mistake she has made, you might tell her to forget about it. You say it is water over the dam.

Another common expression, "to hold water," is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about. It probably comes from the way of testing the 7 of a container. If it can hold water, it is strong and has no holes in it. If your 8 can hold water, it is strong and does not have any holes. If it does not hold water, then it is weak and can not be 9.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.

Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.

However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook.
