二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   The bird dropped like a rock. Before lowering the gun, I realized what I’d done—I’d killed my first animal. I rushed into the brush, praying, “Oh God, please don’t let it be dead.” The pigeon lay there with blood out of its beak (), feathers scattered about and its head bent lifelessly to the side. After burying it, I hurried home and went to hide my gun in my room.

I was dead silent at dinner. I felt as though every time I lowered my head, Dad was looking at me, but whenever I stole a glance in his direction, he seemed simply to be paying attention to his food. Mom finally uncovered the main dish—chicken. The dead pigeon appeared in my mind so that I almost threw up on the plate. Pushing my chair back and I ran to my room. My head buried in my pillow, I felt Dad rubbing my back. My tears slowly disappeared and I cleared my throat. “I shot a pigeon today,” “Oh?” my father replied, his expression unchanging.” And how did it feel?” “It felt... awful,” I answered.

“I’m sure it did. That’s one of the reasons I said you shouldn’t shoot birds.” I glanced at him,” Are you going to punish me?”

“Well, you misused your BB gun, and you disobeyed me. What you need is to always remember how bad it felt to kill that poor bird. Somehow, I think you will. ”And, patting me on the shoulder, he said, “Now let’s go to get dinner.”

Little did I know that my father was right before this. I would remember killing that bird along with a lot of other things for the rest of my life.

1How did the author feel just after realizing having killed the bird?

A.Upset and despair. B.Delighted and proud.

C.Tired and sad. D.Scared and regretful.

A.He had something urgent to do.

B.He didn’t like chicken at all.

C.He thought of the killed bird.

D.He was afraid to face his parents.

3What did the father do after being told the truth?

A.To take away the author’s gun.

    B.To criticize the author seriously.

C.To require the author to obey him forever.

D.To ask the author to remember killing the bird.

4What do we know about the author’s father?

A.He was satisfied to see the author hide his gun.

B.He didn’t want the author to waste time playing.

C.He used his special way to teach the author a lesson.

D.He was tolerant of any of the author’s mistakes.

  • 27、   Originating back in 1869 in Cincinnati, Ohio, baseball has been a game played and loved by millions for nearly 150 years. From its origin to the present day, there have been hundreds of fantastic baseball players who have gone on to inspire new players. Here are our top inspirational baseball stars.

Gray was one of the players that started his career in wartime, appearing in 77 games as a player of St. Louis Browns. Gray had an accident when he was six years old, resulting in the loss of an arm, but he never let his disability stop him from achieving his dreams.

    Jim Morris

Morris attended a Tampa Bay Devil Rays tryout in 1999 and ended up leaving a great impression which saw him sign a contract with the team at 35 years old. The film "The Rookie" is based on Morris's story, letting you learn about the troubles and problems that Morris faced and overcame.

    Jimmie Foxx

Born in 1907, Jimmie Foxx was described as a fearsome hitter whose strength earned him the title" The Beast". Foxx was only the second batter in baseball history to top 500 home runs(本垒打). • 29、In recent years, a growing body of research has shown that our appetite and food intake are influenced by a large number of factors besides our biological need for energy, including our eating environment and our perception(感知) of the food in front of us.

Studies have shown, for instance, that eating in front of the TV (or a similar distraction) can increase both hunger and the amount of food consumed. Even simple visual clues, like plate size and lighting, have been shown to affect portion size and consumption.

A new study suggested that our short-term memory also may play a role in appetite. Several hours after a meal, people's hunger levels were predicted not by how much they’d eaten but rather by how much food they'd seen in front of them—in other words, how much they remembered eating.

This disparity (新旧研究的差异)suggests the memory of our previous meal may have a bigger influence on our appetite than the actual size of the meal, says Jeffrey M. Brunstrom, a professor of experimental psychology at the University of Bristol.

"Hunger isn't controlled individually by the physical characteristics of a recent meal. We have identified an independent role for memory for that meal," Brunstrom says. "This shows that the relationship between hunger and food intake is more complex than we thought."

These findings echo earlier research that suggests our perception of food can sometimes trick our body’s response to the food itself. In a 2011 study, for instance, people who drank the same 380-calorie milkshake on two separate occasions produced different levels of hunger-related hormones (荷尔蒙),depending on whether the shake’s label said it contained 620 or 140 calories. Moreover, the participants reported feeling more full when they thought they'd consumed a higher-calorie shake.

What does this mean for our eating habits? Although it hardly seems practical to trick ourselves into eating less, the new findings do highlight the benefits of focusing on our food and avoiding TV and multitasking while eating.

The so-called mindful-eating strategies can fight distractions and help us control our appetite, Brunstrom says.

【1】What is said to be a factor affecting our appetite and food intake?

A.How we feel the food we eat.

    B.When we eat our meals.

    C.What element the food contains.

D.How fast we eat our meals.

【2】What would happen at meal time if you remembered eating a lot in the previous meal?

A.You would probably be more particular about food.

B.You would not feel like eating the same food.

C.You would have a good appetite.

D.You would not feel so hungry.

【3】What do we learn from the 2011 study?

A.Food labels may mislead consumers in their purchases.

B.Food labels may influence our body’s response to food.

C.Hunger levels depend on one's consumption of calories.

D.People tend to take in a lot more calories than necessary.

【4】What does Brunstrom suggest we do to control our appetite?

    A.Trick ourselves into eating less.

    B.Choose food with fewer calories.

    C.Concentrate on food while eating.

D.Pick dishes of the right size.

【5】What is the main idea of the passage?

A.Eating distractions often affect our food digestion.

B.Psychological factors influence our hunger levels.

C.Our food intake is determined by our biological needs.

D.Good eating habits will contribute to our health.

四、短文填空 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

AI artwork sells for $432,500 — nearly 45 times its high1 — as Christie’s becomes the first auction house to offer a work of art created by an algorithm. This portrait, however, is not the product of a human mind. It was created by an2 intelligence, an algorithm defined by that algebraic formula with its many parentheses. And when it went under the3 in the Prints & Multiples sale at Christie’s on 23-25 October, Portrait of Edmond Belamy sold for an4 $432,500, signaling the arrival of AI art on the world auction stage.

From a distance, Portrait of Edmond de Belamy looks almost plausible. Up close, however, the paintwork becomes a grid of mechanical-looking dots, the man’s face a golden blur with black holes for eyes. Look into those eyes. They show no sign of feeling or life. Did a computer make this?

The answer is yes. The first artwork5 by AI to be sold at Christie’s, its6 price would seem to suggest that in future we will get computers to make art for us. Robot van Gogh will harmlessly cut its ear off and robot Picasso will be a genius.

Is this the future AI art visionaries such as the French collective Obvious, which programmed this “painter” by getting it to compare its own work with 15,000 pre-20th century portraits, have in mind? Or are they just, God forbid, making a fast buck from deceivable art collectors? Because believing the algorithm that knocked this up to be in any meaningful way an “artist” is like thinking your voice-interaction programme is out to get you. Dream on. Computers would need to replicate human consciousness before they could replicate the funny thing humans do called “art”.

Art is a way in which human 7 expresses itself, and is equally true of the earliest cave art, Rembrandt’s portraits and Duchamp’s urinal. And that is what is missing from Portrait of Edmond Bellamy. Art is a way humans communicate ideas, perceptions and feelings to each other. It has no 8 outside the human passion to communicate. So in what meaningful sense can an AI replica of certain9 traits of old master paintings be called art?

For a robot to really make art, it would need an autonomous mind that was emotional as well as10. No AI developer has yet claimed to be anywhere near achieving that and if they ever do, their creation will probably have better things to do than paint portraits — like destroy humanity.

Maybe afterwards robots will invent their own kind of art, but it won’t be some poor pastiche of human genius.

It will be beyond anything we organics could imagine.

  • 38、阅读下面材料,   根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,   使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Mai Lin wasn’t doing well enough at school, or at least she wasn’t satisfied with herself. She wished she could do better.

“Let’s review the material we learned in the last unit,” the history teacher said. “Who can tell us what caused the War of 1812?” Mai Lin sat at her desk, staring ahead. She hoped the teacher wouldn’t call her name. They hadn’t studied the War of 1812 at her old school and she didn’t know the answer.

“Alison?” the teacher asked instead. Oh, perfect, Mai Lin thought. Of course Alison would have the answer. She seemed to have all the answers. Alison was the most popular girl in school – always surrounded by millions of boyfriends, best friends, and others. She was like a brilliant sun.

Mai Lin hadn’t made one or two friends of her own so far. Her old school was small and low-key, but a shy person like Mai Lin had a chance there. This new school, however, seemed as big as an airport to Mai Lin, and it seemed very hard to get around in it. She still got lost sometimes in the school.

Mai Lin frowned (皱眉) as Alison answered the teacher’s question. Alison probably never got lost, Mai Lin thought to herself. You could probably put Alison down in the middle of a desert, and within five minutes she’d be able to tell you the best way to get home.

History class finally ended, and Mai Lin headed for the gym. The class had been playing basketball. Alison, who was as tall and thin and attractive as a tree, was very good at it. Beside her, Mai Lin felt like a very small and foolish ant. Today, however, the gym teacher pointed to a thick rope hanging from the ceiling and said, “Everybody! You’re going to climb this rope today.”
