26、 In life, we're often torn between the person we want to be and the person we ought to be. Yet, while many hesitate to take the risks of becoming their "ideal self', a new study shows that people regret not running after their passion.
Inspired by research published in the 1990s, psychologist Thomas Gilovich along with his colleague built upon his original study, which proved that regrets came from what people hadn't done, by looking into the content of people's most enduring regrets grown from not living up to our "ideal self", as opposed to not living according to our "ought self".
Researchers began by explaining the difference between regrets concerning the "ideal self" and the "ought self", before asking participants to list their regrets. Across the six different studies conducted as part of this project, participants said they experienced regrets concerning their ideal self more often. They also mentioned more ideal-self regrets than ought-self regrets when asked to list their regrets in life so far.
"Our work is the first to show that people's biggest life regrets more often involve failures to live up to their ideal self than their ought self," the researchers said. They advise that people go on with caution, as the best way to live depends on how much weight you place on your ought self and your ideal self. If you care more about your ought self, you'll be wise to minimize your regrets by thinking twice before going ahead and seizing the moment.
Despite this research, however, knowing what you want and pursuing that passion are two different things. 27、 Problem-solving is part of everyone’s daily life. If you’re facing a tough problem at work, you truly are better off getting a good night’s sleep before making any decisions, as findings from a study at Northwestern University suggest.
Because many tricky problems are solved by thinking of them in a fresh way, Sanders and cognitive researchers Samuel Osburn, Ken A. Paller, and Mark Beeman assumed that processing unsolved problems during sleep would help people purify their memories of the problems, and improve their chances of solving them the next day.
To test that assumption, they used a technique known as targeted memory reactivation (TMR) with 61 study participants. In two evening laboratory sessions, the participants attempted to solve verbal, space, and other puzzles one at a time with the experimenters randomly pairing each puzzle with a musical sound. If the participants failed to solve a puzzle within 2 minutes, the corresponding sound played one more time. After failing to solve six puzzles each evening, they replayed the puzzle-sound pairings until they had them down.
After those sessions, participants took home technology that provided the sound cues while they slept.
Across the two mornings, they solved more cued puzzles than uncued puzzles. In fact, they solved 55 percent more puzzles when the corresponding sound had been played while they slept.
“While we use tricky puzzles in our study, the underlying cognitive processes could relate to solving any problem on which someone is stuck or blocked by an incorrect approach,” Sanders explains. “They advised, however, that the effect may only apply to situations in which an individual already has some background information to help solve a problem.” Beeman says.
Still, the study reveals important information about sleep, memory, and incubation (潜伏期) for problem-solving. The team plans to further study these processes, to further pin down the mechanisms and to see how it occurs in real-life problem-solving.

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

A tradesman was leading a caravan (商队) to another country to sell his goods. Along the way they came to the edge of a hot-sand desert. Then the caravan leader hired a desert guide, one who could follow the stars, so they could travel only at night when the sand cooled down. The guide sat on the first cart. Later that night, the desert guide, who was driving the first cart, saw from the stars that they were getting close to the other side of the desert. He had been very tired, so when he relaxed, he fell asleep. Then the camels who, of course, couldn’t tell directions by reading the stars, gradually turned to the side and went in a big wide circle until they ended up at the same place that they started from! By then it was morning, and the people woke up and realized they were back at the same spot where they started. They lost heart and began to cry about their condition. Since the desert crossing was supposed to be over by now, they had no more water, and they were worried about there was nothing to drink, and were extremely afraid they would die of thirst. They even began to blame the caravan leader and the desert guide. However, the leader himself didn’t lose courage. He talked with the desert guide and then they began wandering, trying to work out a plan.

First of all， you need to keep a positive attitude and not take things to heart． That someone got a better grade than you doesn't mean that they are smarter—perhaps they studied longer or knew the material more． It's easy to become frustrated if you are not doing as well as your friends， but being optimistic will help you deal with future similar situations．
Secondly， if students at school are bullying you， know when to stand up for yourself． Don't let other classmates make you feel that you are not good enough． They are simply insecure and do not know how to deal with the pressures of school． They are just trying to make others feel bad， so they can feel better about themselves．
Lastly， it is necessary to keep things correctly． For any situation that is stressful， take a second look from a different point of view． When I look back to the frustrations of my high school days， I notice that many of them seem very unimportant to me now．
It's not easy to be confident when there are so many students who seem like they "have it all"，but try to realize that you, too, are good enough. It’s not a competition about who is smarter, more beautiful—everyone is different—so believe your individuality.
