  • 26、   Being in the midst of a pandemic lockdown can make people feel worried. But nothing has shown this panicky behavior more than storing specifically toilet paper.

Seemingly transcending borders and cultures, people from all over the world, including the US, UK and Japan, have been clearing supermarket shelves mainly for this necessity. But what’s the reason for this sudden toilet paper storing? You can understand panic buying food, but do we really need that much toilet paper?

Steven Taylor, author of the book The Psychology of Pandemics, told the Independent that our toilet paper storing is a product of our disgust. During a pandemic, people’s sensitivity to disgust increases, like when you move aside if someone nearby sneezes.

“Disgust is like an alarm … and what better tool for removing disgusting material than toilet paper. I think this is how it became a conditioned symbol of safety,” he said.

Writing for The Conversation, Niki Edwards of The Queensland University of Technology said, “When people hear about the novel coronavirus, they are afraid of losing control. And toilet paper feels like a way to maintain control over health and cleanliness.”

Another one of the most important reasons behind this toilet paper trend, according to the BBC, is the snowball effect. Due to its reports, both in the news and social media, people naturally ask, “Will there be enough toilet paper for my family and me?” This leads to more people following the crowd and buying toilet paper because of their fear of missing out.

“Fear spreads easily. So when you see people around you buying things in a panicky way, it’s going to make you feel more anxious,” wrote American psychologist Baruch Fischhoff for CNBC.

While there are, of course, selfish people who store just because they can, it’s worth keeping things in perspective. Remember, just as countries are cooperating to find a vaccine, we must cooperate to ensure that everyone has their share of necessities.

1The underlined word “transcending” in the second paragraph probably means “____”.

    A.going beyond B.connecting with

C.getting an understanding of D.making good use of

2According to Dr Steven Taylor, what does this toilet paper trend result from?

A.The desire to get rid of disgusting material. B.The fear of losing control over cleanliness.

C.The frequent reporting on toilet paper. D.The selfish side of human nature.

3Whose words are quoted to explain “the snowball effect”?

    A.Steven Taylor’s B.Niki Edwards’

    C.Baruch Fischhoff ‘s D.The author’s

4What is the author’s purpose in writing this text?

A.To explore the bad effects of the toilet paper trend.

B.To explain why people tend to store pile toilet paper.

C.To criticize those people who store toilet paper.

D.To discuss people’s different attitudes toward the toilet paper trend.

5Which of the following statement do you think the author will probably NOT agree with?

A.The toilet paper storing can relieve people’s anxiety.

B.It’s selfish of those to store too much toilet paper than they need.

    C.Panic buying is quite understandable.

D.It’s better for us to stay calm and reasonable so as not to follow the toilet paper trend.

  • 28、Environmentally Friendly Denmark

    What Are They Doing and

    How Is It Helping?

    THEY PREFER TO CYCLE

On average, Danes living in Copenhagen cycle almost 2 miles a day. Danes are far more likely to own a bike than they are a car, in fact 40% of Danes own a car and 90% a bike.

    THEY DON’T WASTE FOOD

Danes are very good at avoiding wasting food. Supermarkets offer 80% reductions at the end of the day to try to minimize waste. An app called “TooGoodToGo” also allows restaurants to give away unwanted food at closing time.

    THEY ARE AWARE

Danes are mindful about knowing where their food has come from. It is not uncommon for children to be taken to witness killing and dissections of animals at zoos so they understand where the food on their plate began its life.

    THEY EAT ORGANIC

Danes eat more organic food than any other country in the world. This is because organic food is not significantly more expensive than other options, making it a good choice for everyone.

    Source : The Local

    THEY USE CLEAN ENERGY

By 2050, Denmark wishes to become independent of fossil fuels. This is far from unreachable as earlier this year the country ran entirely on wind energy for a whole day.

    Source: The Danish Ecological Council

A.Demark is able to function properly for long without the use of fossil fuels.

B.Danish supermarkets are trying to reduce its amount of food to cut waste.

C.Many Danes take their children to zoos to show them where food comes from.

D.Unlike other countries, organic food in Denmark is cheaper than non-organic food.

  • 29、   Think back to when you were in a classroom, and the teacher set a difficult problem. Which of the two following answers is closer to the way you reacted?

A: Oh no, this is too hard for me. I’m not even going to seriously try.

B: Ah, this is quite difficult but I like to push myself. Even if I don’t get the answer right, maybe I’ll learn something in the attempt.

The psychologist Carol Dweck of Stanford University gave a group of children problems that were slightly too hard. One group reacted positively, said they loved challenge and understood that their abilities could be developed. She says they had a ‘growth mindset’. But another group felt that their intelligence was being judged and they had failed. They had a ‘fixed mindset’ and were unable to imagine improving.

Professor Dweck believes that, for years, children have been praised for their intelligence or talent, but this makes them sensitive to failure. They want to please by getting high grades, without interest in learning. The solution is to praise the process that children, are engaged in: making an effort, using learning methods and improving. This way they will become better and achieve more.

Psychologists have been testing these theories. Students were taught that if they left their comfort zone and learned something new and difficult, they will be more intelligent. These students made faster progress than a control group. In another study, unsuccessful school children were exposed to growth mindset technique for a year. The results were astonishing. They came top in a regional test, beating children from much more privileged background. These children had previously felt that making an effort was a sign of being stupid, but they came to see it as the key to learning.

So, back to our original question, if you answered B, well done - you already have a growth mindset. If A, don’t worry; everyone is capable of becoming better with a little effort and self-awareness.

1The author mentions the two answers at the beginning to ________.

    A. give an example B. teach how to react

    C. draw a conclusion D. introduce the topic

2Which aspect should be praised according to Professor Dweck?

    A. Talent. B. High grades.

    C. Hard-working. D. Achievement.

3What makes the students with fixed mindset fail?

    A. Lacking imagination. B. Negative attitudes.

    C. Poor judgment. D. Low intelligence.

4What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. Making an effort. B. The regional test.

    C. The background. D. The comfort zone.

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo in New York City has tested positive for the respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus, becoming the first known case of human-animal 1, the zoo's chief veterinarian said on Sunday.

Nadia, the 4-year-old Malayan tiger that tested positive, was 2 for the COVID-19 disease after 3 a dry cough along with three other tigers and three lions, the Wildlife Conservation Society, which manages the zoo, said in a statement.

All of the cats are expected to recover, it said. But officials believe this is a unique case because Nadia became sick after 4 to an asymptomatic zoo employee, Paul Calle, chief veterinarian at the Bronx Zoo, told Reuters.

Calle said they did not know which employee infected the tiger. "This is the first time that we have discovered that a person infects the animal and the animal gets sick," Calle said, adding that they planned to share the findings with other zoos and institutions. " I guess 5 we will all have a better understanding as a result.

While the other tigers and lions were also 6 symptoms, the zoo decided to test only Nadia because she was the sickest and  had started to lose her appetite already, and they did not want to 7 all the cats to anesthesia(麻醉), Calle said.

Nadia 8 X-rays, an ultrasound(超声波) and blood tests to try to figure out what was making her sick . Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.
