26、   Most people who know about diabetes think there are two kinds: type l, which you are born with, and type 2, which you get later in life from eating too much. This isn't quite right, since the two types can occur at different life stages and for a number of reasons, but the broad distinction is well rooted in the public's mind.

Now some doctors want to change that and break the disease down into five subtypes (子类型), each with its own set of risk factors, outcomes and treatments. The new claim was made by researchers based in Sweden and Finland who assessed almost 15,000 people with diabetes in those countries. They found that these people fell into one of five categories based on their blood sugar, insulin (胰岛素) production and sensitivity, and their body mass index and age. The subgroups also vary genetically.

The researchers say that two of the subtypes are mild and can be largely treated with lifestyle changes and small amounts of a standard drug. People with the three more severe forms are more likely to develop eye and kidney disease, so treating them is a must.

So far, so good. After all, this is the way medicine is heading. The more we learn about common diseases, the more we realize there is huge variation in the way they present themselves. For example, research into the genetics of several cancers has helped identify which treatments might work best for individuals.

The idea that a cheap and fairly straightforward blood test could help doctors predict the cause and prognosis (预断) of that individuals' diabetes is appealing. This is especially the case given that an estimated 9 percent of the global population are affected by the disorder and many aren’t getting the right treatment.

But the five subgroups aren't the end of the story. Diabetes just isn't that simple. For a long time, we considered the condition as being either “childhood-onset” or “adult-onset”, and this is how many people still think of the disease. Yet in the last decade, this classification was questioned as it was discovered that adults in their 40s and 50s could develop a form of the disease that looked very “childhood” like, while more children are developing type 2 diabetes. It is also quite likely that the risks and outcomes of diabetes will look different in people who live outside Sweden and Finland, such as in the Middle East whose nations have some of the highest rates of the condition in the world.

29、When learning a foreign language, most people fall back on traditional methods: reading, writing, listening and repeating. But Brian Mathias’ research team found out that if you gesture with your arms while studying, you can remember the vocabulary better, even months later.

As Mathias describes, they had 22 German-speaking adults learn a total of 90 invented artificial words over four days. While the test subjects first heard the new vocabulary, they were shown a video of a person making a gesture that matched the meaning of the word. When the word was repeated, the subjects performed the gesture themselves. Five months later, they were asked to translate the vocabulary they had learned into German. Those who performed better on the task showed a higher level of activity in their motor cortex—the part of the brain that is responsible for our body movements. The researchers concluded that the motor cortex contributed to the translation of the vocabulary learned with gestures. The effect did not occur when the subjects were only presented with matching pictures instead of gestures.

Another research group led by Leipzig had young adults and eight-year-old children listen to new vocabulary for five days, paired with matching pictures or videos of gestures. After two months, the two methods were still tied. But after six months, the adults benefited more from the gestures than the pictures, while the children were helped equally by both.

But it is not only the motor component itself that promotes learning. The meaning conveyed by the gesture also figures in. “I think we underuse gesture in our classrooms,” Goldin-Meadow says. “Good teachers and good listeners use it, but not always in a systematic way. Others don’t necessarily bring it into the class—and it could be used more often and more effectively.”

About 20 miles to the southwest, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. Based on the blowing wind, he was pretty sure that’s where it came from.

Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They found that Dayami had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and art supplies. Heiss then posted about his search on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family, but with no success. Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2008, he sent a private message to Radio XENY, a radio station in Nogales.

The next morning, Heiss got a message from Radio XENY: They had located Dayami, an eight-year-old girl whose parents were killed in a car accident. They would arrange a get-together with Dayami at the radio station. So they bought just about everything on Dayami’s list.
