二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   It’s been a long, wet winter. As thousands of people died from coronavirus disease, improving our immune system has rarely felt more urgent.

“When you come into contact with a virus you’ve never met before,” says Sheena Cruickshank, a professor of immunology at the University of Manchester, “you’ve got various barriers such as skin, microbiome and so on to try to stop it getting into your body.” If a virus breaks these defenses, it has to deal with our white blood cells, or immune cells.

“However, our immune systems may have blind spots, where our immune response might won’t recognize certain bugs,” says Cruickshank, “Personally, my immune system is not necessarily very good at seeing colds.” But a healthy lifestyle will secure solid defenses.

Cruickshank recommends “eating a more varied diet with lots of high-fiber foods”. Being vegetarian isn’t a necessity for microbiome health, but the more plant foods you consume, the better.

To be immunologically fit, you need to be physically fit. “White blood cells can be quite inactive,” Says Prof Arne Akbar, the president of the British Society for Immunology, “Exercise mobilizes them by increasing your blood flow, so they can do their security jobs.” Apart from this, exercise can reduce stress, which is next on our list of immune-improving priorities. Stress hormones(激素) can weaken immune function. If you have had it, the virus never completely goes away. “During periods of stress,” says Akbar, “it can reactivate and then we get sick.”

Exercising and eating well will have the likely knock-on effect of helping you sleep better, which is a bonus because a tired body is more sensitive to bugs. “If you’ve got a regular sleep pattern, you have natural body rhythms and everything’s fine. If they go out of order, then you’ve got problems.” says Akbar.

1According to paragraph 2, when the barriers fail in preventing a virus entering your body, _________ will come up next.

    A.skin B.blood

    C.microbiomes D.immune cells

C.To stress that a healthy lifestyle helps improving immune system.

D.To indicate that catching a cold is not a terrible thing.

3What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.Microbiomes B.White blood cells

    C.People doing exercise D.Stress hormones

4This text mainly introduces _________ ways of improving our immune system.

  • 28、   Which is more important when an architect designs a building: beauty or function?

At the start of the twentieth century, Louis Sullivan, one of the creators of modern architecture said that “form follows function.” Functionalism is used to describe the idea behind architecture which primarily focuses on the purpose of a building. However, many people disagree with this and feel that beauty is a more important factor (因素)in architectural design. In the modern world, it seems that most architects combine both ideas: aiming to create buildings which are both functional and beautiful.

The reason for creating a building in the first place is clearly very important. For example, when building an airport terminal, you need to think of the needs of passengers as well as planes. Passengers want to get to their plane as quickly as they can, and planes need to be parked in a more efficient way. As such, many airport terminals have a circular shape with satellite areas. Residential homes need to have enough space for a family, art galleries need wall space to show pictures, and factories need to manufacture goods as efficiently as possible.

Beauty, however, is also important when it comes to the construction of a building. Living or working in an ugly place creates a depressing and uninspiring environment. On the contrary, an attractive building can make people feel happier and increase their motivation to work. There is also a wider responsibility to society which architects have to consider. Beautiful, well-constructed buildings are a symbol of a civilized society, and reflect well on the business or reputation of the owner.

In theory, there seems to be no reason why architecture cannot be both functional and beautiful. Yet in practice, this can cause problems. The Guggenheim Museum in New York, was supposed to combine beauty with function. Many consider the museum's white spiral ramp (螺旋坡道) beautiful, but there have been complaints that it is impractical, as it is difficult to stand back to view the art. Also, the ramp is so narrow that it can become overcrowded. It seems that even a celebrated design has problems with functionality.

If architects focus only on function, buildings may be cold, ugly and uninteresting. On the other hand, if they focus only on making it look beautiful, the building may be completely impractical. Therefore, combining these two ideas is necessary to create the perfect piece of architecture.

【1】From paragraph 3, what is the form of a building closely connected with?

    A.Its specific function.

    B.Its exceptional beauty.

    C.The architect's idea.

    D.The changing world.

【2】Why is beauty an important factor in architectural design?

A.It is a guarantee of people's work efficiency.

B.It can give people spiritual satisfaction.

C.It suggests the fine reputation of an architect.

D.It is a reflection of ancient civilization.

【3】The Guggenheim Museum serves as an example to tell us ________.

A.it is function rather than beauty that architects should focus on

B.world famous buildings must be beautiful as well as practical

C.there is no chance at all to have function and beauty connected

D.it can be difficult to have function and beauty perfectly combined

【4】What is the suitable title for the article?

    A.Architecture: beauty or function?

    B.Argument: theory or practice?

    C.Preference: abstract or concrete?

    D.Conflict: Fantastic or realistic?

四、短文填空 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

After a long day, Zhang Tian finally got back to his small room, feeling tired. He had started working at seven in the morning, and it was eight in the evening now. He had to prepare his lessons for the following day. This is a typical day for Zhang Tian. Coming to Guizhou Province to teach has been quite an experience for him.

Zhang Tian graduated from university and got a teacher's certificate last year. His parents, like most, hoped he would go to a big city to find a teaching job. Likewise, his friends all left his hometown for work in Shanghai or Beijing. Zhang Tian felt differently, however. He wanted to start a new lifestyle. He had met wonderful teachers from small villages during his early school years and he was inspired by them to go and teach where he was needed the most. For that reason he applied for and became a volunteer teacher in a village school. Bringing with him lots of books, clothes, and two pairs of trainers, Zhang Tian travelled to the village with an eager heart. He imagined all sorts of exciting things about living independently and teaching in a village.

However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school had just three teachers and Zhang Tian was the only English teacher. The other two local teachers were responsible for maths and Chinese. The school was much smaller than he had expected, with only three classrooms. In front of the classrooms, there was a playground which got dusty on windy days and muddy on rainy days. Living in the village was also more challenging than he had thought. The power and water supplies were unstable, so he could only shower every three or four days, and he had to learn how to cook.
