二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   As the saying goes, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." That's because this healthy food choice is supposed to be full of nutrients. The apple at the supermarket, though, might be so o1d that it has lost many of its nutrients. But soon there might be a way to check the quality of fruit by scanning it.

Scientists at Food+Future coLAB have come up with the idea of a handheld spectrometer(分光仪) that scans food. The machine will work by shining infrared(红外线的)light on a piece of produce. By measuring how chemicals in the fruit or vegetable take in the light, the scanner can recognize the food's chemical makeup.

"The machine can tell you exactly how old an apple is, how many calories it contains, what nutrients are present inside it, and even small differences in taste," Greg Shewmaker of Food+Future coLAB recently said.

For the new machine to be useful to consumers, researchers first need to create a database that contains possible chemicals for a particular type of fruit, like an apple, for example. Scientists will need to scan lots of pieces of produce to collect this data. The information collected will allow the scanners to tell customers the quality of fruit.

Once consumers know what's inside an apple, they can decide if they want to buy it. Knowing fruit quality may also affect how a store prices produce. "We can price produce based on the nutritional value," Shewmaker explained.

Food+Future coLAB has already created a working model of its machine. It says you may see one in your local supermarket within the next few years. Then deciding whether you've picked the healthiest fruit will be just a quick scan.

1Why does the author mention the saying about apple at the beginning?

    A. To prove that the apple is full of nutrients.

    B. To introduce the topic of the fruit scanner.

    C. To advise people to keep healthy by eating apples.

    D. To state that the apple is the most tasty among fruits.

2What do we know about the spectrometer?

    A. It is powered by infrared light.

    B. It is not useful in many customers' eyes.

    C. It can help customers decide which fruit to buy.

    D. It can improve the quality of fruit and vegetables.

    3According to Shewmaker, what's a spectrometer's influence on a store?

    A. It makes a store more attractive.

    B. It provides price reference for produce.

    C. It enriches customers' knowledge about food nutrition.

    D. It creates a database about the chemical makeup of fruit.

4What would be the best title for this text?

    A. The Fruit Scanner B. The Priced Fruit

    C. How to Scan Fruits D. How to Pick Fruits

It’s probably my favourite bookstore ever. It’s “designed for travelers who like reading”. It is famous for its travel book collection. Categorized by country and region, you can find books on history, arts, food, culture, film, literature, and many more topics of the region. It’s absolutely fascinating. My favourite is the London literature section near the entrance. It’s very tasteful selection and it’s a pleasure just to read a few paragraphs while you browse (浏览). The interior is beautiful. Classic wooden counters, wooden floors, shelves and tables of book are organized nicely. Every time I passed by I had to make a stop there. Staff there are helpful and friendly.

I love the convenience of Amazon but bookstores with special atmosphere like this just cannot be replaced.

    —— Rachel Z, San Francisco

I don’t read books as often as I would like. I just don’t have time, and let’s be honest, after doing all my schoolwork. I’d rather just put my brain on coast and read an OK magazine and catch up with some news about film stars. I was brought into Daunt while wandering down the street and it’s really just an inspiring place and it actually made me want to “read” something. Really, if you’re anywhere near the shop, do pop in and just look around, even if you have a love/ hate relationship with reading like I do. The inside of the shop made me look around as if I remember enjoying as a kid seeing some new big store, when in fact it’s not new, but the sight of a bookstore with classic design charm is refreshing after spending so much time in libraries.

Go and see it for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!

    —— Thomas A, London

1Those who want to read in Daunt Books ________.

    A. should avoid Sunday morning B. can only read travel books there

    C. will find there is no place for parking D. can only buy the books they want in cash

2Rachel Z likes Daunt Books so much mainly because ________.

    A. it offers her much convenience

    B. its staff are all helpful and friendly

    C. its atmosphere is special and attractive

    D. it has the largest collection of books in London

3What is the reading habit of Thomas A?

    A. He likes reading British literature. B. Reading is just a way to relax himself.

    C. He likes visiting big and new bookstores. D. He thinks reading in libraries is more helpful

4How did Thomas A know about Daunt Books?

    A. His friend introduced it to him. B. He knew it from a popular magazine.

    C. He talked with the library’s staff about it. D. He paid a visit to it only by accident.

  • 28、   Most people feel lonely sometimes, but it usually lasts only between a few minutes and a few hours. This kind of loneliness is not serious. In fact, it is quite normal. For some people, though, loneliness can last for years. Now researchers say there are three different types of loneliness.

The first kind of loneliness is temporary. This is the most common type. It usually disappears quickly and does not require any special attention. The second kind, situational loneliness, is a natural result of a particular situationfor example, the death of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Although this kind of loneliness can cause physical problems, such as headaches and sleeplessness, it usually does not last for more than a year.

The third kind of loneliness is the most severe. Unlike the second type, chronic(长期的) loneliness usually lasts more than two years and has no specific cause. People who experience habitual loneliness have problem socializing and becoming close to others unfortunately, many chronically lonely people think there is little or nothing they can do to improve their condition.

Many researchers agree that the loneliest people are between the ages 18 and 25, so a group of psychologists decided to study a group of college students. They found that more than 50% of the students were situationally lonely at the beginning of the term as a result of their new circumstances, but had adjusted after a few months, 13% were still lonely after seven months due to shyness and fear. They felt very uncomfortable meeting strangers, even though they understood that their fear was not reasonable. The situationally lonely students overcame their loneliness by making new friends, but the chronically lonely remained unhappy because they were afraid to do so.

Psychologists are trying to find ways to help habitually lonely people for two reasons: they are unhappy and unable to socialize and there is a connection between chronic loneliness and serious illness such as heart disease. While temporary and situational loneliness can be a normal, healthy part of life, chronic loneliness can be a very sad, and sometimes dangerous condition.

1How would you treat temporary loneliness according to the passage?

    A. Talk to friends. B. Go to see a doctor.

    C. Just ignore it. D. Ask your teacher for guidance.

2In the last sentence of the second paragraph, “it” refers to _______.

    A. temporary loneliness B. sleeplessness

    C. a new place D. situational loneliness

3All of the following are true EXCEPT that ________.

    A. situational loneliness can cause physical problems

    B. temporary loneliness does not need special attention

    C. chronic loneliness can cause problems in socializing

    D. 37% of the students can overcome loneliness easily

4Where can we probably read the passage?

    A. Comic books. B. A novel.

    C. A magazine. D. A diary.

  • 29、   A couple of weeks ago, my grandfather was explaining his favorite expression. "Nothing is ever easy? The following day, as I tried to complete my day's work, I happened to notice a bumblebee(大黄蜂)on the skylight(天窗).The skylight was particularly high up, but I thought removing the bee would take no more than five minutes. An hour later, the bee still remained. All that had changed was that the living room was a mess and that 1 was dizzy from looking up into the sunlight. I did not expect to waste an hour on an insect so tiny, but by doing so, I understood what my grandfather meant.

It is not only time that we tend to underestimate — we don’t account for unexpected costs. We often imagine what can work in our favor but we seldom think of all the negative things that could a fleet us. However, it is important to remember that your day or week or year might nor go as planned, and that is completely normal. It is perfectly acceptable to feel challenged even at a task you thought was simple because that is part of life.

If you can accept that nothing will ever be easy, then life might seem slightly more manageable. In middle school. I thought high school might be easier because I could choose the classes I wanted to take. In high school I thought college might be easier because I could have a schedule(计划)best suited for myself. Yet each time, I was both wrong and disappointed. After accepting that school wouldn'tand shouldn'tbe easy. I found myself with a more positive altitude and improved results.

Of course, there should be preparations made to account tor expenses or time. Doing so can only help you accomplish your goals in a better way. However, there is no need to beat ourselves up when something stands in our path. Maybe we cannot see a bee coming our way, but we can always give ourselves the extra time to catch it.

1Why did the author mention his experience of removing a bee?

A.To share something unforgettable with us.

B.To lead us to what the author learned from it.

C.To show the unexpected costs it caused.

D.To tell us how easy it is to waste our rime.

2Why do things often tum out to be different from what we expect?

A.We often don't take lime seriously.

B.We tend not to have enough money.

    C.Unexpected things can happen.

D.It is easy to feel challenged.

3According to the text, what does the underlined phrase "beat ourselves up" mean?

A.lo hit or kick ourselves hard, many times

    B.to blame ourselves too much

C.to encourage ourselves to work hard

    D.to give up ourselves

4What is the author's purpose of writing this article?

A.To encourage people to make greater efforts.

B.To explain how to make preparations.

C.To tell us what to do when something gets in our way.

D.To persuade us not to expect things to be easy.
