  • 26、The sleepover(通宵派对)is so common in America.Usually,it reminds us of images of girls in clean nightclothes, having pillow fights, doing makeup and gossiping.I'll say this now:most sleepovers are like that, but mine usually aren't.I've never been that girl as a child,so I have never really found doing makeup interesting, but there are some ways of sleepovers that stay the same.Let's take a closer look.

Usually, the activities start in the late afternoon.Girls show up carrying a sleeping bag and a pillow. After all the guests arrive,it's usually time to have dinner.Even though it differs, the most common food for sleepovers is pizza.

When it gets to be past one o'clock in the morning, most of the girls are sleepy already but we usually keep doing whatever we are doing. Most of us end up falling asleep at around 5.

The sleepover is a great experience for girls. While the activities are different, the feelings are still the same.We all experience happiness and excitement.Sleepovers are fun because we get to be with our friends, which is the most important thing.

  • 28、In the desert north of Palm Springs, California, there are many huge wind turbine blades (风力涡轮机叶片). Hundreds of thousands of birds and other creatures die from crashing onto the turbine blades or flying too close to the blades.

Since 2018, the searchers has employed a group of “sharp-nosed workers” with names like Indy, Lady, and Filson. Sniffer dogs (嗅探犬) have been helping to search this area thoroughly to help scientists and energy producers in better understanding the impacts of wind farms on wildlife. The body parts they find may be shocking, but each one is a data point that will eventually help to protect other birds and bats as companies install (安装) more turbines for clean energy.

Hundreds of thousands of birds and bats die from crashing onto the turbines each year, resulting in wildlife populations decline. Wind operators can take steps to reduce the fatalities, such as playing loud sounds through speakers to keep birds away. But those measures only work when energy companies have a solid grasp of interactions between wind farms and wildlife.

If you need to know how many animals a wind farm kills, it helps to work with dogs. In a 2020 study using randomly placed bodies (尸体), human searchers found just 6 percent of bats and 30 percent of birds. Partnering with dogs, however, greatly improved the quality of the search. In the same study, detection dogs found 96 percent of bats and 90 percent of birds. Other researches have found similar results.

Thanks to the sniffers, scientists collected a wealth of data they couldn’t have obtained otherwise. While it’s sad to find so many animals killed by turbines, researchers are analyzing every bit of information they have to understand the industry’s true impacts and explore how to improve the design of future wind projects to achieve the necessary and rapid development of renewables with the least harm to wildlife.

【1】What are Indy, Lady and Filson?

B.Dogs are better at searching for bodies.

C.Wind farms harm birds more than bats.

D.Deaths caused by wind farms have risen.

【4】Which is the best title for the text?

  • 29、Three minutes of looking at red light once a week may help our eyesight (the ability to see), new research suggests. The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment for declines in color vision (色觉减退) as we get older.

Last year, researchers from University College London did a study on red light therapy (疗法). 24 healthy volunteers, aged between 28 and 72, were asked to look at red light for three minutes every day for two weeks. Tests later found that the eyesight of people over the age of 40 improved.

To test the possible weak points of their therapy, they did a new study this year. Instead of using the light every day, they used it once a week. The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.

On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not have any improvement.

“We’ve found that one single exposure (暴露) to red light in the morning can greatly improve declining vision,” said lead author Glen Jeffrey.

The findings do support their earlier work, and they might make the treatment more practicable, since a once-weekly treatment is easier to stick to than a daily one. But the team’s promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy volunteers. Larger studies would be needed to show the benefits of red light therapy.

“In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure to deep red light could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.

Given its low cost (as little as $15) per device (设备), and simplicity, theteam is excited about the future of their therapy.

【1】What plays a key role in red light therapy?

A.The device used in the treatment.

B.The time of day for treatment.

C.The time that one treatment lasts.

    D.The number of treatments received.

【2】What makes it necessary to improve the study?

    A.The age of the volunteers.

B.The poor vision of the volunteers.

C.The health condition of the volunteers.

    D.The number of the volunteers.

【3】What is Jeffrey’s attitude towards the future of the therapy?

    A.Hopeful.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Carefree.

    D.Unclear.

【4】What is the purpose of this text?

A.To state the importance of eye care.

B.To explain the value of deep red light.

C.To introduce a way to fight vision decline.

D.To encourage aged people to protect their eyesight.

A couple in Virginia Beach is forever thankful to two surfers (冲浪者) who also happen to be health care workers. “We’d like to express our appreciation to the heroes who saved Todd on that beach, ”the couple said.

Todd, 59, and Donna, 58, woke up early on October 2 to go for a bike ride and take pictures of the sunrise. While walking barefoot along the shoreline and enjoying the sights, Todd suddenly fell down.

Donna thought her husband was joking. But she quickly realized this was no laughing matter. Todd’s heart stopped beating and he turned blue. “I called his name and cried for help:’Help! Please help Todd’, ”Donna said later.

Tyler Volpe, a surfer, was in the water when Todd fell down. Volpe is also a physician assistant. He heard Donna’s cries for help. “I knew it wasn’t normal, ”he said. “I came flying out of the water. ”

Paul Roy, 24, a health care worker at a local hospital, was also surfing that morning. Volpe started chest compressions (按压) while Roy breathed into Todd’s mouth. Then, they switched positions, A woman on the beach put her arm around Donna and prayed with her. “I really thought he was dead, ”Donna said.

As Roy and Volpe continued CPR, Todd breathed a few times. The sea water was starting to come in. Other surfers used their boards to form a wall between the rescue effort and the water.

“They kept him alive until the ambulance got there, ”Donna said. “It could have been two minutes; it could have been 10 days. I was watching my life end with his. ”

Doctors used a defibrillator (电击器) to shock his heart and bring back his heartbeat. On the second shock, he finally came to himself.
