    5. Someone’s pet dies.

Don’t say: “Gee! It was only a cat!” or “My roommate doesn’t like her dog and she is getting rid of her dog. Do you want it?” Do say: “I’m sorry, she was such a great cat. How long did you have it?”

  • 27、   Sushila, who lives in Basti, a village in western India, has been a symbol of hope thanks to her continuous efforts in education.

Twenty years ago, Sushila noticed that there was no Anganwadi(印度贫困地区教育中心)in her neighborhood. As a strong believer in education, she decided to open one in Basti. However, no one was willing to help her, and there was very little government support. So, she started an Anganwadi in her home, where she taught for two years. Later, the Anganwadi moved to a temple.

"Initially, children would not come to the Anganwadi because their parents would take them to the fields," said Sushila. However, she refused to let this bring her down and kept making door—to—door visits to encourage the villagers and get them on board. Slowly, the villagers warmed up to the idea and began to send their children to the Anganwadi.

Sushila started the Anganwadi in 1091 and continued it till 2002. In the 11 years, she helped more than 250 children learn the basics of education for free! "The kids' families were too poor to pay for education. Sometimes the parents would give me food grains, but I never expected any money, she said.

Then the Anganwadi was turned into a government school — Balwadi Vidya Mandir — in 2003—2004.

Sushila is also an untraditional woman. She married Baburao, an agricultural laborer who had two sons from his previous marriage. And she completely turned his life around. Being poor, Baburao had to drop out of school in Grade 2. "I always wanted my children to get education and live a life different from mine, so we sent all of them to school," said Baburao. “Today, everybody in the village wonders how the children of a laborer are so educated. My elder son is a teacher while the younger one is a policeman: And the child of Sushila and me is a professor of Geography."

【1】Why didn't the children in Basti go to Anganwadi before 1991?

A.The children were unwilling to go to school.

B.The government hadn't set up enough Anganwadis.

C.Their parents didn’t realize the importance of education.

D.Their poor family couldn't afford the high Anganwadi fees.

【2】What does the underlined phrase "warmed up to" mean in paragraph 3?

    A.Started to accept.

    B.Came up with.

    C.Kept a distance from.

    D.Made an impact on.

【3】What does Baburao imply by his words in the last paragraph?

A.He regrets not having an opportunity to get educated.

B.Education has enabled their children to live a better life.

C.He's proud that all their children can earn a lot of money.

D.His wife succeeded in teaching their children on her own.

【4】What does the author think of Sushila's work?

    A.Respectable.

    B.Effortless.

    C.Complicated.

    D.Competitive.

  • 28、Is there anybody out there? For centuries humans have wondered, although the ways in which we have gone about this have varied. As we have gained a greater understanding of the universe, our searches have taken on more concrete forms. Questions about aliens(外星人) have become a subject for science rather than science fiction.

Now new cooperation between the Very Large Array (VLA) observatory in New Mexico and the SETI Institute in California means that our curiosity about aliens can be closer than ever before to being satisfied. Data from the VLA’s 28 radio telescopes, used to scan a vast area of sky, will be fed through a special supercomputer that will search for distant signals.

How likely it is that a signal will be found, and what this might mean, are hard questions to answer. SETI’s existing projects have not detected any signals from other planets so far. But recent discoveries in space and Earth sciences have provided some encouragement for those who are enthusiastic about the possibility, however remote, of detecting other civilizations.

Once it was thought that our solar system could be unique. Since the discovery of the first exoplanet (a planet beyond the solar system) in the 1990s, thousands more have been located. Around one in five stars is now thought to have a planet in their orbit in a so-called ”habitable(适合居住的) zone”— that is, at a distance from the star where the temperature means that life is theoretically possible.

Are Earth’s 7.5 billion humans, along with billions of other animals and plants they share their home with, on their own in the universe? If there is another life form somewhere, could it be as intelligent as humans? Or could it threaten them? I think all of these need further exploration. As explorations of Mars continue, and a new set of observations from the James Webb Space Telescope are set to begin, our interest in the possibility of alien life appears as much as before.

【1】Why does the VLA work with SETI?

    A.To develop new radio telescopes.

    B.To satisfy some people’s curiosity.

    C.To build a special supercomputer.

D.To find evidence of aliens’ existence.

【2】What is the encouraging news for scientists exploring distant civilizations?

A.Some exoplanets may have habitable zones.

B.New technologies are adopted to find aliens.

C.Signals have been detected from other planets.

D.Life does indeed exist on exoplanets.

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the existence of aliens?

    A.Positive.

    B.Uncertain.

    C.Worried.

    D.Unacceptable.

【4】What might be the best title for the text?

    A.Exoplanets: home of aliens

    B.Receiving signals:aliens appear again?

    C.Finding aliens:possible or not?

    D.Space: the unknown place

  • 29、   You might think it’s going to be really challenging if you plan to learn a foreign tongue. You’ve probably heard a lot of talks about how easy it is to learn languages as a young child, and that learning as an adult can be tough. You might even know friends or family members who have tried to learn a foreign tongue and failed. That’s because they have friends or colleagues around them who experienced failure. We’re here to cheer you up with some good news and inspire you to get started. The amazing adult brain

Scientists are always learning about the human brain. Decades ago, experts believed that the brain developed during childhood and then retained that way for life. However, modern studies have shown us that the brain has the ability to continually form new neural(神经的)connections throughout adulthood. A 2010 Swedish study tested two groups of people, one in the range of age 21 through 30 and another between 65 and 80. Remarkably, they found no significant differences in neuroplasticity(神经可塑性). In other words, this suggests that it’s possible for you to learn new things at any age.

Besides being possible to learn languages, research also suggests that it improves the adult brain in general. In a 2012 Chinese study, experts looked at a group of adults who were learning Mandarin over a nine-month period. They found that these adults showed improved integrity(完整性)in their white matter, the part of the brain that allows neural cells to communicate. The better your neural cells communicate, the easier it will be for you to learn new things.

Why may adults have an easier time learning? Children might be blessed with a naturally high degree of neuroplasticity, but that doesn’t mean learning is necessarily easier for them. In fact, adult brains have a number of great qualities that might actually make learning easier, especially if you take advantage of free learning apps like Mondly.

1Why do some adults fail in the language learning?

A.Because they have no plans for language learning.

    B.Because they have poor memories.

C.Because maybe they are affected by some adults who have failed.

D.Because language learning is too difficult for adults to learn.

2What does the underlined word “retained” mean in Paragraph 2?

    A.Kept. B.Changed. C.Improved. D.Strengthened.

3Which of the following is true?

A.Children can learn a language more easily.

B.Adults can learn a language even at old age.

C.The learning apps like Mondly are good for children.

D.Adults can learn a language more easily after learning Chinese.

4What will the text refer to next?

A.How to learn a new language for adults.

B.How to tell the kids to learn a language.

    C.How to improve neuroplasticity.

D.How to use the app Mondly.
