26、If you are a fruit grower — or would like to become one —take advantage of Apple Day to see what’s around. It’s called Apple Day but in fact it’s more like Apple Month. The day itself is on October 21, but since it has caught on, events now spread out over most of October around Britain.
Visiting an apple event is a good chance to see, and often taste various kinds of apples. To people who are used to the limited choice of apples such as Golden Delicious and Royal Gala in supermarkets, it can be quite an eye opener to see a number of classical apples that still exist today, such as Decio which was grown by the Romans. Although it doesn’t taste of anything special, it’s still worth a try, as is the knobbly (多疙瘩的) Cat’s Head which is more of a curiosity than anything else.
There are also types developed to suit particular local conditions. One of the very best types for eating quality is Orleans Reinette, but you’ll need a warm, sheltered place with perfect soil to grow it, so it’s a pipe dream for most apple lovers who fall in love with it.
At the events, you can meet expert growers and discuss which ones will best suit your conditions, and because these are family activities, children are greatly fond of apple-themed fun and games.
Apple Days are being held at all sorts of places with an interest in fruit, including impressive gardens and commercial orchards (果园). If you want to have a real orchard experience, try visiting the National Fruit Collection at Brogdale, near Faversham in Kent.

27、LONDON—Terror struck in the heart of London on Thursday as explosions ripped through three subway trains and blasted(炸开)the roof off a crowded red double-decker bus. At least 37 people were killed and more than 700 wounded in the deadliest attack on the city since the blitz(闪电战)in World War II.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair blamed Islamic extremists and said the bombings were designed to coincide with the opening in Scotland of a G-8 summit of the world’s most powerful leaders. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said the bombings—which came the day after London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympics--- have the “hallmarks(特点)of an al-Qaida-related attack”.
Trapped passengers in the Underground railway threw themselves on the floor, some sobbing. As subway cars quickly filled with smoke, people used their umbrellas try to break the windows so that they could get air. Passengers emerged from the Underground covered with blood and soot(黑烟). On the street, in a light rain, buses ferried the wounded, and doctors used a hotel as a hospital.
“I didn’t hear anything, just a flash of light, people screaming, no thoughts of what it was. I just had to get out of the train,” said subway passenger Chris Randall, 28, who was hospitalized with cuts and burns to the face, the legs and hands.
“It was chaos(混乱),” said Gary Lewis, 32, evacuated(撤离)from a subway train at King’s Cross station. “The one haunting(萦绕)image was someone whose face was totally black( with soot) and pouring with blood.”
Police said there had been no warning and that the blasts at three subway stations went off within 26 minutes, starting at 8:51 a.m. in an Underground train just outside the financial district. Authorities initially blames a power failure but realized it was a terror attack after the bus bombing near the British Museum at 9:47 a.m.—less than an hour after the first explosion.

28、The world food safety could be in danger because of a number of food production shocks (冲击), according to an Australian study.
The researchers from the University of Tasmania found that there were 226 shocks in the area of food production across 134 nations and the frequency has been increasing over the past 50 years.
According to Cottrell, a researcher from the University of Tasmania, the main causes behind the shocks are different. For crops, extreme weather events such as floods and no rain for a long time play the biggest part. Weather also plays a role in livestock(家畜)production, but disease plays a bigger role. Disease also leads to aquaculture(水产业)shocks, while in the ocean most of the food shocks are caused by overfishing.
“When we look at the food production systems, covering crops, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture,” Cottrell said, “we find that crops and livestock are more easily affected than aquaculture. And some countries in South Asia are more frequently affected than others.”
The effects of production shocks reached far away from where they happened. When one means of food production is greatly reduced, it will cause unexpected results. “The India got a lot of food production shocks in crops and livestock, largely because of floods,” Cottrell explained. “If countries like India are shocked and the rice production is much smaller, they’ll probably send less goods to another country. And that shock suddenly starts to affect all the trade partners of the major producers as well.”
According to what Cottrell said, while the international community faces a great challenge to these problems, steps taken now can help fight against unexpected shocks in the future. “This can be done through measures such as food store systems so that they are better able to deal with the effect which is caused by problems such as climate change.” said Cottrell.

A.Their causes are different in different production areas.

29、 Japan says it will start releasing radioactive(放射性的) water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear center into the sea beginning in two years. The polluted water is to be treated before it is released into the Pacific Ocean. The government announced the plan Tuesday and said it had been approved by cabinet ministers. The decision had long been expected, but faced delays linked to safety concerns and public opposition.
Japan has said the water release is necessary to move forward with cleanup efforts at the Fukushima nuclear center. Three reactors(反应堆) there suffered meltdowns after the 2011 earthquake and huge ocean wave destroyed the plant5s cooling systems. The disaster forced 160,000 people to flee polluted areas around the plant. Tokyo Electric Power Company, or TEPCO, operates the nuclear center. It is carrying out the cleanup. TEPCO said Fukushima will run out of all its storage space for radioactive water by late 2022.
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said the government had decided the ocean release was the most realistic way to solve the water storage problem. Other methods considered included injecting the water into the ground or converting it to steam or hydrogen and then releasing it into the atmosphere.
The government describes the water to be released as “treated” and not “radioactive”. But experts say that 100 percent of radioactive materials cannot be removed. Government officials say tritium(氚) is the only substance that cannot be removed from the water. They say tritium is not considered harmful in small amounts.
The officials say all other radioactive materials in the water can be reduced to releasable levels. The exact amount of radioactive material that would remain in the water is not known. Some scientists say the long-term effects on ocean life from large amounts of such treated water also remains unknown. Fishermen and many people living in the area strongly oppose the plan. They have said releasing the water into the ocean could cause widespread damage to Fukushima5s fishing and agriculture industries.
【1】What is the reason for Japan's water release?
A.Previous disasters damaged its storage space.
B.Too much nuclear energy is needed.
C.The storage space for radioactive water won't be enough.
D.TEPCO didn't deal with it properly.
【2】What can we infer from the passage?
A.The ocean release was the only way to solve the water storage problem.
B.Only the fishing and agriculture industries will be affected.
C.Tritium won't do harm to humans if taken in in small amounts.
D.It’s possible that the radioactive water is still harmful after being treated.
【3】What is the main idea of the text?
A.Japan5s plan to release radioactive water faces delays.
B.Japan announces to release radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean.
C.Japan will treat the radioactive water before it is released into the Pacific Ocean.
D.Japan’s efforts to deal with radioactive water.
【4】What is the author's attitude to the water release?
A.Neutral.
B.Supportive.
C.Opposed.
D.Unconcerned.

Be smart about advertisements!
People cannot get away from advertisements which promise cheap goods and free gifts. Last week, I read an advertisement for a sale. Seeing the attractive prices for the goods, I couldn’t help driving to the supermarket. As the advertisement said, most of the things there were much cheaper than usual. In no time, I filled two baskets with ten bars of soap, two very nice-looking kitchen knives and so on. When my husband got home and saw all the things I bought, he asked me to think about what I needed all these things for. There was already enough soap at home, and there were already two knives in the kitchen drawer. I think I should be smart about advertisements in future and not be tricked by them.
