26、Over the next 50 years, we are going to send more and better robots to Mars. 【1】 There is a limit to what robots can tell us, though, so eventually we will have to send people to study the planet.
Before people can visit Mars, we need to invent a spaceship that can take us there. 【2】 Depending on where Mars and Earth are in their orbits around the sun, it could take between six months and a year to get there.
The moon is much closer, and we were there many years ago. Over the next 10 years, we are going to work on building a new spacecraft. 【3】
Once we return to the moon, we are going to build a station so that people can live and work on the moon for months at a time. This is important so that we have a place to start from when we want to visit Mars. 【4】
By the time you are old enough to be an astronaut, we will have people spending months on the moon. By the time you are old enough to be a commander of a space mission, we will be taking trips to Mars. By the time your kids are old enough to be astronauts, we may have people living on Mars. Wouldn’t it be cool to get a postcard from someone who was building a house on Mars? 【5】
A.Mars is very faraway.
B.People will go to live on Mars one day.
C.Wouldn’t it be cooler if it was you who sent the postcard?
D.Using this craft, we will practice the skills we need to go to Mars.
E.Those robots will send back better pictures, maps, and weather reports.
F.It would be possible for us to go to Mars in a spacecraft in the near future.
G.This is also important because it gives us practice with living away from Earth.
27、Given all the heated debates about how America's children should be taught, it may come as a surprise to learn that students spend less than 15% of their time in school. While there's no doubt that school is important, a series of recent studies remind us that parents are even more so. A study, for example, finds that parental involvement -checking homework, attending school meetings and events, discussing school activities at home -has a more powerful influence on students' academic performance than anything about the school the students attend. Another study, reports that the effort put forth by parents has a bigger impact on their children's educational achievement than the effort devoted by either teachers or the students themselves. And a third study concludes that schools would have to increase their spending by more than $1,000 per pupil in order to achieve the same results that are gained with parental involvement.
So parents matter a lot -a point made clear by decades of research showing that a major part of the academic advantage held by children from wealthy families comes from the “concerted cultivation (协作培养) of children” as compared to the more laissez faire(散养的) style of parenting common in working- -class families. But this research also reveals something else that parents, of all backgrounds, don't need to buy expensive educational toys or digital devices for their kids in order to give them an edge. They don't need to drive their offspring to enrichment classes or test-prep courses. What they need to do with their children is much simpler talk,
But not just any talk. Although well-known research by psychologists Betty Hart and Todd Risley has shown that professional parents talk more to their children than less- affluent (不富有的)parents-a lot more, resulting in a 30 million “word gap” by the time children reach age three-more recent researches are raising our sense of exactly what kinds of talks at home contributed to children's success at school. For example, a study conducted by researchers at the UCLA School of Public Health and published in the journal Pediatrics found that two way adult-child conversations were six times as effective in promoting language development as intervals (间歇)in which the adult did all the talking. Engaging in this mutual back-and-forth gives children a chance to try out language for themselves, and also gives them the sense that their thoughts and opinions matter. As they grow older, this feeling helps middle-and upper-class kids develop into confident supporters for their own interests, while working-class students tend to avoid asking for help or arguing their own case with teachers, according to a research presented at American Sociological Association conference earlier this year.
The content of parents’ conversations with kids matters, too. Children who hear talk about counting and numbers at home start school with much more extensive mathematical knowledge, which predicts future achievement in the subject. Psychologist Susan Levine, who led the study on number words, has also found that the amount of talk young children hear about the spatial properties of the physical world-how big or small or round or sharp objects are-predicts kids’ problem-solving abilities as they prepare to enter kindergarten
While the conversations parents have with their children change as kids grow older, the effect of these exchanges on academic achievement remains strong. And again, the way mothers and fathers talk to their middle-school students makes a difference. Research by Nancy Hill, a professor at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, finds that parents play an important role in what Hill calls "academic socialization”-setting expectations and making connections between current behavior and future goals (going to college, getting a good job).Engaging in these sorts of conversations, Hill reports, has a greater impact on educational accomplishment than volunteering at a child's school or going to PTA meetings, or even taking children to libraries and museums. When it comes to promoting students’ success, it seems, it's not so much what parents do as what they say.

28、Are there any foreigners in your city? How do you address(称呼) them in English when you want to talk to these foreigners? The following may be some simple rules the beginners should follow.
1. When talking to strangers there is often no special form of address in English. In most cases, if you want to catch the attention of a stranger it is necessary to use such phrases as “Excuse me”.
2. In British English “Sir” and “Madam” are considered to be too formal for most situations. They are used mostly to customers in shops or restaurants .While in American English “Sir” and “Madam” are not so formal and are commonly used between strangers, especially with older people whose names you don’t know.
3. When you talk to some people you know, you can use their names directly. If you are friends, use their first names; if your relationship is more formal, use “Mr.”, “Mrs.”, “Ms.”, etc, before their family names.
4. There are many other forms of address which can be used between friends and strangers. However, many of these are limited in use. For example, “pal” and “mate” can be used between strangers, but are usually only used by men talking to other men.

29、It's school time again! You're probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad that summer is over. Some kids feel nervous or a little frightened on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and even a new school. Luckily, these "new" worries only stick around for a little while. Let's find out more about going to a new school.
Most teachers kick off the new school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the things you'll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class, too. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often read classroom rules and school rules to you so you'll know what's allowed and what's not. Please pay close attention.
Seeing friends you haven't seen for some time can make the first day a good one. You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day, but it's a great day to make a new friend, so try to say hello to kids you know and new ones that you don't know. Make the first move and you'll be glad you did, and so will your new friends!
Being well-prepared for your first day of school is also of great importance. You can make the day feel special by wearing clothes that you really like. Maybe you got a great T-shirt on one of your vacations, or a pair of sneakers. It also can make you feel good to be prepared and have all the things you need, such as pencils, folders, and whatever else you'll need. But make sure that you pack them the night before in case you don't have time in the morning.
